Historia
History was made at the 2015 Belmont Stakes when American Pharoah won the Triple Crown, the first since Affirmed in 1978. As magnificent as the champion is, the team behind him has been all too human while on the road to immortality. Written by an award-winning New York Times sportswriter, American Pharoah is the definitive account not only of how the ethereal colt won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes, but how he changed lives. Through extensive interviews, Drape explores the making of an exceptional racehorse, chronicling key events en route to history.

Slow Out of the Gates
Revisado: 05-17-24
When I was younger, I read the biography of Seabiscuit and LOVED it. This one, not so much. Either you really have to be into modern horse racing for this story or you must be VERY patient. I hate to yuck someone else’s yum, but this wasn’t for me!

Historia
When Condé Nast offered Ruth Reichl the top position at America’s oldest epicurean magazine, she declined. She was a writer, not a manager, and had no inclination to be anyone’s boss. Yet Reichl had been reading Gourmet since she was eight; it had inspired her career. How could she say no? This is the story of a former Berkeley hippie entering the corporate world and worrying about losing her soul. It is the story of the moment restaurants became an important part of popular culture, a time when the rise of the farm-to-table movement changed, forever, the way we eat.

Another Ruth Reichl Gem!
Revisado: 06-30-19
I have always loved Ruth Reichl's writing style. It's so effortless, elegant and rich. I didn't get into Gourmet until I was a freshman in high school. I lived in a small town in Ohio and I had been getting back issues from the library for years. It became a treat for me: once I finished my homework I allowed myself to read the articles and pore over the recipes. I remember seeing the "Rockstar" cover, reading "Consider the Lobster" and I still think about the beautiful cover from February 2003 with the mound of chocolates and raspberries. The magazine inspired me and I have some of my fondest cooking memories making lasagna with my new sister-in-law and learning patience making a Tres Leches cake for the first time. I highly recommend this book and this recording. If you are a Gourmet fan like me you will find it all-at-once satisfying, heartbreaking, and comforting .

Historia
Julia Child is synonymous with French cooking, but her legacy runs much deeper. Now, her great-nephew and My Life in France coauthor vividly recounts the myriad ways in which she profoundly shaped how we eat today. He shows us Child in the aftermath of the publication of Mastering the Art of French Cooking, suddenly finding herself America's first lady of French food and under considerable pressure to embrace her new mantle.

Another Great Biography of Mrs. Child!
Revisado: 03-30-19
Often, in other biographies, the narrative just trails off towards the end of Julia's life. This focuses upon it and ties it up nicely. Also, since it is partially from a first-person perspective (through Mr. Prudhomme's eyes) it's nice to get to see snatches of the parts of her life that weren't on camera.

A Classic That Every Child Should Hear!
Revisado: 05-25-18
I have listened to (and read) this book at least once a year since I was a young kid. E.B. White’s voice is comforting and deep and I love the hints of voices he does. This is a wonderful story that gently teaches the value of life and the friendships in it. I recommend it for everyone!
