Trauma therapist and Licensed Clinical Social Worker Adam Young helps you explore your personal story so you can understand how your experiences have shaped your brain—which, in turn, allows you to understand why your present day-to-day life looks and feels the way it does. He shows you how to confront and process the story of your family of origin, your sexual story, the story your body is telling you, your cultural story, your story with God, and more with kindness rather than judgment so that you can experience healing, self-acceptance, and release.

Excellent book. About half or more is a repeat of his podcast (which is top-notch). Regardless, excellent starting point to understand why engaging your own story is so needed to live more fully present in your life today.
Questions to engage the material throughout the book were super helpful.

Historia
Every day, we hear of relationships failing and questions of whether humans are meant to be monogamous. Love Sense presents new scientific evidence that tells us that humans are meant to mate for life. Dr. Johnson explains that romantic love is an attachment bond, just like that between mother and child, and shows us how to develop our "love sense" - our ability to develop long-lasting relationships. Love is not the least bit illogical or random, but actually an ordered and wise recipe for survival.

If only we all could have know this before...
Revisado: 10-11-24
When we hear an infant cry...we understand that this baby needs comfort and/or care. But when we hear our spouse 'cry' (yell, accuse, blame, withdraw, avoid, etc, etc), somehow we do not hear the same desire for connection, care, and comfort. If only we could. If only we were taught that the cycle can stop.
This book does just that if you can suspend the judgement pounding in your ears, and exercise a little curiosity. Curiosity into your own heart and that of your spouse, your friend, and your child.
This information can change your life, your inner world, and every relationship you have...if you'll let it.

Heralded by the New York Times and Time as the couples therapy with the highest rate of success, Emotionally Focused Therapy works because it views the love relationship as an attachment bond. This idea, once controversial, is now supported by science, and has become widely popular among therapists around the world. In Hold Me Tight, Dr. Sue Johnson presents Emotionally Focused Therapy to the general public for the first time. Johnson teaches that the way to save and enrich a relationship is to reestablish safe emotional connection and preserve the attachment bond.

Wow! Content and narration
Revisado: 10-03-24
First, let me say, this is absolutely the best narrated, non-fiction book I have ever listened to! And I've listened to a boatload. I was mesmerized.
Secondly, content is life-changing, and hope-giving. From Demon Dialogs all the way to Hold Me Tight Conversations. I laughed. I cried. Understanding that we're all really asking for comfort was an eye-opening concept. It was like getting a peak behind a curtain and gaining an understanding to how the heart and relationships really function.
Very relatable. Not stuffy or overly academic, yet still very informative.
A must 'read'!

Essential skills for life, healing & growth
Revisado: 02-14-24
I was familiar with these concepts but listening to this book was like hearing them in another language which allowed me to absorb them from a different angle.
Calm, yet engaging narration. Author uses personal stories, along with other's situations to make the material, not only understandable, but relatable. It's refreshing to hear a teacher model humility well.
And this book isn't just information. It has very practical suggestions that anyone could implement. Simple, yet challenging.
I'm buying two physical books after this great listen. One for me & another for our church leadership. Worth every penny.

We all need community but could’ve been told simpler
Revisado: 05-14-23
I enjoyed this book. Nodding in agreement in parts & heartily arguing about others.
We all need community, close friends, mentors, etc. We are way too separated. Iron sharpens iron. Author did a good job articulating why.
My only beef were the portions that detailed confrontation, correction & calling out. Yes, these are an essential part of healthy relationships. But I think it would have been helpful to talk about how to do that well. How to invite people into that type of conversation. How to be curious first before jumping to judgment. A little more about personal responsible in those conversations. And of course, empathy.
There were several areas of repetition also which were a little cumbersome. But overall, a great book to start with. God job Jennie Allen!

Historia
While there are many books about writing, none deal firsthand with the intersection of songwriting, storytelling, and vocation, along with nuts-and-bolts exploration of the great mystery of creativity. In Adorning the Dark, Andrew describes six principles for the writing life: serving the work, serving the audience, selectivity, discernment, discipline, and community. Through stories from his own journey, Andrew shows how these principles are not merely helpful for writers and artists but for anyone interested in imitating the way the Creator interacts with his creation.

When Carolyn Weber moved to Oxford University to study, she didn't expect to find God there. But she did. As she grappled with her newest and most important relationship, she also found that there was another invitation: to think bigger about love. In this book we follow Weber through courtship and into marriage and parenthood. Now a literature professor, Weber reflects on her relationship with a sometimes-absent father and how that has shaped her.

Delightful, life-giving, twaddle-free
Revisado: 04-02-21
Such beautiful writing! What delicious storytelling! Truly lovely.
If your looking for how-to's or how to nots, this is not that book. If your looking for preachy affirmations of dogma, this is not that book. If your looking for graceless or Wordless permissiveness, again, this is not that book. But what a treasure this book is!
You have to pull out the lessons, meditate and ponder through the stories. With any great storytelling, she weaves her history like one does talking with a friend over time. Bits and pieces, a bit out of order, but always circling back again to flesh it out.
She addressed our greatest longing to be fully known and yet fully loved. And how we look for that in our fathers and our spouses. But ultimately, it's our deep, intimate relationship with God that fills that role, She's putting real-life story to the imagery we find in Scripture. This book is rich with an abundance of literary references and soul-washing Truth.
However, I will confess that if I hadn’t heard her interviewed with Juli Slattery, I may not have known where she was going. With sex in the title and not being familiar with Augustine's The City of God, I wasn't sure what I was getting into.
As an added note, the narrator was exceptionally engaging in her style. Very talented. I thoroughly and wholeheartedly loved it!
