Historia
Clemantine Wamariya was six years old when her mother and father began to speak in whispers, when neighbors began to disappear, and when she heard the loud, ugly sounds her brother said were thunder. In 1994, she and her fifteen-year-old sister, Claire, fled the Rwandan massacre and spent the next six years migrating through seven African countries, searching for safety—perpetually hungry, imprisoned and abused, enduring and escaping refugee camps, finding unexpected kindness, witnessing inhuman cruelty. They did not know whether their parents were dead or alive.

One of the best narrators I’ve listened to
Revisado: 06-21-22
It feels like listening a monologue performance instead of “someone reading a book”. I would recommend this book mostly for that reason. This is definitely one of the books that are better as an audiobook. I don’t know if Clementine itself is that likeable as a character but maybe because she was being brutally honest. The story is interesting because it offers a different point of view from victims of war/life after the war, but I have a feeling it won’t give me that much impact if I just read the book as a text instead of listen to the audiobook

Historia
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

Amazing performance, meh content
Revisado: 02-22-21
Performance-wise, you get what you expect from the great actor Matthew McConaughey. But content-wise, I really wish it was just a memoir. Instead, it was only 50% memoir, 40% unsolicited preachy self-help-style advices, and 10% poems that he wrote.
The actual memoir itself was pretty interesting but since it has to share space with the preachy stuff I feel like the content is very shallow and only touching the surface. You can summarize everything and put it on his Wikipedia page.
The advice part (or as he calls it “Prescribe”) was so unnecessary because it was old and cliche (same energy as “reach for the stars”) and somehow coming from him it doesn’t feel relatable and the vibe was very “preachy bullshit from a know-it-all rich guy”.

One of the greatest physicists of the twentieth century, Richard Feynman possessed an unquenchable thirst for adventure and an unparalleled ability to tell the stories of his life. "What Do You Care What Other People Think?" is Feynman's last literary legacy, prepared with his friend and fellow drummer, Ralph Leighton.

First 50% was fun, last 50% was a boring lecture
Revisado: 01-15-18
I love that this book has a chapter about Arline, his first wife who was only mentioned briefly in ‘Surely You’re Joking...’ It was such a tragic romantic story but it helps us in getting to know a different side of Feynman.
The Arline story was in the first 25% of the book. A couple of chapters after that were letters written by other people about Feynman. Then the rest of the book was about his work helping NASA, ended with several chapters on rocket science.
The NASA part started ok in the beginning, still had the same feeling as ‘Surely You’re Joking...’ but after 2-3 hours I started wondering, “when will this part of the story end?! Enough already!” Apparently it went on till the end of the book. The last 2-3 chapters were not even stories anymore, it was lectures about rocket that could be interesting for people who are into it, but not me. Couldnt even understood half of it. Ended up listening with 2x speed just to get it over it.

Easy read, inspiring, entertaining
Revisado: 11-24-17
Lots of interesting stories as illustration. I used to only read novels and fiction because I thought non-fiction books were all boring. This was the book that changed my mindset. Kept me entertained while giving me a sense of "I'm actually learning something too!"

The occasion was a big birthday. And it inspired two close friends to get together in Dharamsala for a talk about something very important to them. The friends were His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. The subject was joy. Both winners of the Nobel Prize, both great spiritual masters and moral leaders of our time, they are also known for being among the most infectiously happy people on the planet.

Revisado: 11-24-17
Could have been summarised in 3 hours or so. Kept falling asleep while trying to listen to it, but a lot of people seems to really love this book, so I don't know. Maybe it was just not for me.
Good takeaway, though. Can be enlightening as well. It was just.... boring.

Funny, inspiring, shocking, and it made me cry
Revisado: 11-24-17
I have one friend who is super picky about books, doesn't read novels, only read business books and non-fiction. He does love biographies, though. But only if it "has substance."
I finished listening to this book in 3 days and forced him to listen to it. He was unsure, "Trevor Noah the comedian? I don't like stupid comedy books." But I kept forcing him, "Just listen to the first chapter. That's it. Then you can decide if you want to continue."
He messaged me the next day saying, "Shit, I thought the book was gonna be basic. I finished half of it already."
Hell, even my husband who hates audiobook ("Books are supposed to be read!) can't help but keeps eavesdropping whenever I listened to this on our bedroom speaker. I mean, he pretended he was busy with his laptop but he laughed with me whenever Trevor said something funny, and he would blurted out comments like, "Ha! I agree with you, brother!"
Funny, well-written, well-performed, inspiring, eye-opening, shocking, and I'm sure you will also shed a tear in one of the chapters. Cannot recommend this enough.

Historia
Explore the power of the underdog in Malcolm Gladwell's dazzling examination of success, motivation, and the role of adversity in shaping our lives, from the best-selling author of The Bomber Mafia. Three thousand years ago on a battlefield in ancient Palestine, a shepherd boy felled a mighty warrior with nothing more than a stone and a sling, and ever since then the names of David and Goliath have stood for battles between underdogs and giants. David's victory was improbable and miraculous. He shouldn't have won. Or should he have?

My least favorite of all Gladwell's book
Revisado: 11-24-17
I don't think Malcolm Gladwell has ever published a bad book. This one was def not my favorite but still good nonetheless. The usual story + analysis. I feel it's more entertaining than inspiring (that's not a complaint, though. Who wouldn't wanna be entertained?)

Why have history's greatest minds - from George Washington to Frederick the Great to Ralph Waldo Emerson along with today's top performers, from Super Bowl-winning football coaches to CEOs and celebrities - embraced the wisdom of the ancient Stoics? Because they realize that the most valuable wisdom is timeless and that philosophy is for living a better life, not a classroom exercise. The Daily Stoic offers a daily devotional of Stoic insights and exercises, featuring all-new translations.

Really useful but maybe the paperback is better
Revisado: 11-24-17
This was supposed to be read one chapter per day, but who does that, right? Useful quotes and all very applicable in life. Definitely worth buying, but since this is the type of book you would always come back to whenever you need an enlightenment, I think probably better to own the paperback version (not that the audiobook is not good, it's just for practicality, easier to go to the chapter you want if it's a physical book).

After 12 hrs, I didn't want the book to be over
Revisado: 11-24-17
Was a bit hesitated to listen to this since it's 12 hours long (ugh!) but I ended up finishing the book in less than a week, and actually felt a bit sad nearing the end because I didn't want the book to end. I wanted to hear more stories from Phil. The narrator did a really great job in making the story feels alive.
Recommended for everyone, even if you don't like biography, because this can also read like a novel. If paper book has "page-turner", the equivalent of it for audiobook would be the best adjective to describe this book.

Not the best biography but still interesting
Revisado: 11-24-17
He has a crazy exciting life so naturally the story was enjoyable. He was quite open about his private life including his affairs and public feud with British Airways. Branson himself narrated the book quite okay, but technicality-wise was not that perfect because you can obviously hear when one recording session was over and the new recording session started: different volume and Branson talk in different note key. Not a big deal, though. Still recommended.
