Abridged leaving most of the book out
Revisado: 11-14-21
Drowned Hopes is a great book and if you ever get a chsnce to read or listen to the unabridged book, it’s well worth it. I would not have bought this if I had realized that so much of it and so many good scenes had been cut out. I found it more difficult to follow as a result; less understanding of the characters and action piled on action. I wish Audible had an unabridged version.

Okay
Revisado: 08-27-21
Found it difficult to like or sympathize with the heroine. She expects her guy to be a mind reader in the most obscure situations, is continually angsty, and expects him to totally cater to her. Also we don’t get much of a feel for him as a person; in a romance it’s always nice to be able to fall in love with the guy. What we get is she likes the way he looks and he can be charming when lying for her. It’s not terrible, just drags a bit.

Rollercoaster ride
Revisado: 07-09-21
Chris Ewan writes well and the plot keeps moving. It just like there was so much violence that it was off putting. After reading his Good Thief series, I was hoping that this would also be suspenseful but not bloody. I had to skip over sections. And I felt that on some level those who committed egregious violence were let off too lightly. If the violence doesn’t bother you, it’s a great read.

Historia
On a beautiful summer afternoon in 1998, Dan Stephens, a 22-year-old canoeist, was leading a trip deep into Ontario's Quetico Provincial Park. He stepped into a gap among cedar trees to look for the next portage - and did not return. More than four hours later, Dan awakened from a fall with a lump on his head and stumbled deeper into the woods, confused. Three years later, Jason Rasmussen, a third-year medical student who loved the forest's solitude, walked alone into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness on a crisp fall day.

Historia
In 1991, eleven-year-old Jaycee Lee Dugard was kidnapped on her morning walk to the school bus. But despite her family's tireless efforts, Jaycee's disappearance remained a mystery. Then, in August 2009, a registered sex offender named Phillip Garrido appeared on the University of California, Berkeley, campus alongside two young women whose unusual behavior sparked concern among campus officials and law enforcement. That visit would pave the way for a shocking discovery: That Garrido was Jaycee Lee Dugard's kidnapper.

Inaccuracies
Revisado: 08-15-18
On the good side, this tends to be a bit repetitive, but it is interesting and he does a good job of describing all the legal issues. And he shows Philip's personality through interviews with friends and people who knew him.
However, I am reading the book that Jayce wrote about her experiences and her facts disagree with this book. For example, this book says that Philip's wife grabbed her; Jacycee's book says that Philip hit her with the stun gun and pulled her in. This book says that she didn't reach puberty until 2 years after she was taken; Jaycee's book said she was there within weeks if not right away. This book quotes psychiatrists who say that Jaycee bonded with her abductors. Jaycee says she did not. And I've just started reading.
It makes me wonder how much of the rest of the book is wrong.

Emotionally mixed
Revisado: 06-04-18
There are a lot of good things about the story in this book. What I find difficult was the heroine was so negative about everything. She eventually sorts herself out but I found it difficult to listen to her agonizing and always searching for and
finding the cloud behind every silver lining. I gave up listening about 2/3 through and went to the end to see what happened. And the ending was the best part.

Another great Orphan X book
Revisado: 03-19-18
Where does Hellbent rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Towards the top.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Evan, of course. Joey was good, too.
Any additional comments?
This is the 3rd Orphan X book and they keep getting better. I love it that Evan is exploring his human side and doing the right thing. And being a rescuer of people. The relationship between him and Joey is well-done and adds a lot to the book. And the book is exciting; keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Historia
Millie Barnes is this close to finally achieving her perfect life. Rewarding job as a local doctor on Cape Cod? Check. Cute cottage of her very own? Check. Adorable dog suitable for walks past attractive locals? Check! All she needs is for golden boy and former crush Joe Carpenter to notice her, and Millie will be set. But perfection isn't as easy as it looks - especially when Sam Nickerson, a local policeman, is so distracting. He is definitely not part of her master plan. But maybe it's time for Millie to make a new plan....

Unsympathetic heroine
Revisado: 03-15-18
Would you try another book from Kristan Higgins and/or Xe Sands?
Yes, I really like Kristan Higgins books in general and Xe Sands does a great job of narrating.
What could Kristan Higgins have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Make the heroine more sympathetic. She wallows in self-loathing, focused on her own angst, She's whiny and lies and it's hard to like her. And one wonders why she has friends. And she's pretty casual about not showing up to do her doctor job.
Have you listened to any of Xe Sands’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Great, as always
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Fools Rush In?
Any scene where she's whining.
Any additional comments?
Looking forward to listening to another one of Kristan Higgins books and forgetting this one.
She writes well, and the concept of the story is good.

An ordinary snapshot causes a mother’s world to unravel in an instant. After picking up her two young children from school, Grace Lawson looks through a newly developed set of photographs. She finds an odd one in the pack: A mysterious picture from perhaps twenty years ago, showing four strangers she can’t identify. But there is one face she recognizes—that of her husband, from before she knew him. When her husband sees the photo that night, he leaves their home and drives off without explanation.

Great book, issues with narration
Revisado: 05-13-16
What did you love best about Just One Look?
The plot was good, it was easy to care about the characters, twists were unexpected, didn't figure out the end ahead of time.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Angela Dawe and Luke Daniels ?
Luke Daniels is fine.
Any additional comments?
There have been plenty of comments about Angela Dawe. On the positive side, when she does someone's voice in dialogue she's fine. Even when she slips and stretches out an occasional one-syllable word. She does other voices well. They don't have the strident, sing-song, monotonous quality of the narration. Outside of the dialogue, her voice doesn't change to match the emotions in the story. She uses the same tone and inflection to describe picking up the children from school as she uses to describe a situation where someone is in danger. This is distracting.I listened to the abridged version of this book and liked it enough that I bought the unabridged version. I like hearing all the bits that were cut out and it's easier to tune out the narrator because the plot is familiar. I think it's unfortunate that the sample doesn't give you a fair earful of the narration. And I understand she does better on other books. And her dialogue and voices are quite well-done. If you can manage to not get distracted by the narration, the book is worth listening to.
