Historia
To take a skeptical approach to American history is not to dabble in imaginative conspiracy theories; rather, it's to reframe your understanding of this great nation's past and actually strengthen your appreciation for what makes American history such a fascinating chapter in the larger story of Western civilization. And in this bold 24-lecture series, you can do just that.

Historia
An American Tragedy is the story of Clyde Griffiths, who spends his life in the desperate pursuit of success. On a deeper, more profound level, it is the masterful portrayal of the society whose values both shape Clyde's ambitions and seal his fate; it is an unsurpassed depiction of the harsh realities of American life and of the dark side of the American dream.

Great performance to a very good story.
Revisado: 11-21-18
Tragic story. I should have figured with the title as it was that this book would be depressing. You feel for Clyde...and his seeming powerlessness against the tides of his life. Dreiser is an excellent conveyor of tragedy: of winding us up and letting us down... pulling the heart strings and making it hurt and bleed. He strives for what all authors would strive for. I recommend this book and this version to all looking forward to a gripping tragedy of epic proportions.

Unique and Convincing take on Socrates and Plato
Revisado: 10-26-18
Plato is seen as transition from myth to philosophy rather than beginning of philosophy. To dialogues are also seen as summit of right art. The lectures posit Plato and his works as narratives if aporia more than guides for settled doctrine. I highly recommend this series.

Historia
Without even realizing it, we all use the fruits of political philosophy. From liberty to democracy to community, the terms and concepts originated by political philosophers are ingrained in our global consciousness. Yet many of us have an incomplete picture of how these ideas developed and, quite possibly, a skewed perception of their intentions and implications. This highly relevant course sheds light on the labyrinth of Western political and social theory, as well as its influence on modern history.

An essential lecture serie for thinking people
Revisado: 10-24-18
Even more essential than an American Civics class, this lecture series should be studied by any concerned citizen of any nation and anyone concerned with the "ideal", " practical" or good society. I highly recommend it. My only wish is that it would have had 45 minute lectures (and thus another 9+ hours). It was too short!

Great Lectures for the study/practice of religion
Revisado: 08-24-18
Very apt lectures. My only suggestion would be to include Western Axial religion (i.e. Greeks and Israelites) to get a fuller grasp of that age and influence.

Informative, Inspired, and above all, Important
Revisado: 07-29-18
My title is an apt review in itself. The speaker does a good job of conveying the material in simple and manageable ways and also delivers it with some passion and style. While some facts or opinions of his may be speculative or controversial, he acknowledges this and carries himself with an air of humility. I recommend this for academic, and, more importantly, for personal- inspirational interest.
