Heralded as an instant classic of fantasy literature, Maguire has written a wonderfully imaginative retelling of The Wizard of Oz told from the Wicked Witch's point of view. More than just a fairy tale for adults, Wicked is a meditation on the nature of good and evil.

Sorry, but I wasn't a fan.
Revisado: 01-12-25
I know people love this book, and maybe I'm biased because I was comparing it to the musical and the other various versions of The Wizard of Oz I've encountered over the years, but I really just didn't enjoy this. There were plotlines that went absolutely nowhere, and could have been completely left out without it effecting the overall story at all. Also, the characters are generally unlikable, and the ones that are somewhat likable are treated horribly and their stories leave you feeling depressed. I definitely wouldn't read this book again.

So bad I couldn't finish it.
Revisado: 07-22-24
Wooow, this book is racist! I mean just blatantly, unapologetically racist. And it isn't even relevant to the plot. As of chapter 25, where I couldn't take this trash book anymore, there are 2 seperate story lines. One is about the mystery going on with the main character's supposedly dead wife and the other is about him being a doctor. They are completely unrelated at this point, but the doctor storyline is just about how he's such a nice guy for treating his black patients respectfully, even though he sees them as so far beneath him. I seriously thought this book must have been written in the early 90s, but it was written in 2012!

Definitely Worth Your Time
Revisado: 03-04-24
I really enjoyed this book. The characters are relatable, the story is really interesting, yet not outlandish, the ending is satisfying and the narration is top notch. The whole thing felt very believable and it touched on some really serious subjects without being too heavy. I would highly recommend this book.

I have enjoyed every book in this series, but this was my least favorite so far. Not bad, just not terribly interesting and a bit forgettable.

Great author, mediocre story, bad narration.
Revisado: 12-29-23
This book is not up to Joyce Ellis's standards. She's an excellent author, and I love the Rowan Jackman series and the Nikki Galina series, but Matt Ballard is a huge let down. Ballard is not a likable character. This guy is a crooked cop that I can't get behind. And when his supervisor finds out he did some, not only unethical, but highly immoral and illegal things, he just shrugs it off like it's no big deal. The narration is absolutely awful. It sounds like the guy is narrating Winnie the Pooh, not a police thriller. And the accents are terrible. One if the characters sounds just like Hagrid from Harry Potter, which is really comical and distracting. And could these narrators please just listen to the other series so they could get the voices of the overlapping characters right? Rory sounds completely different than in the other series.

I love a twist ending, but wow...
Revisado: 12-15-23
The first 3/4 of this book don't even come across as a thriller, it comes across like a dirty romance novel. The only mystery seems to be how Grace can possibly make such terrible life choices over and over again. When it finally does turn into a thriller, it goes even more off the rails. I mean, there are twist endings, and then there is whatever that was. Also, as far as the narration, each narrator did fine on their own, but it seems pretty obvious that these 2 narrators were given no indication of how the other was going to read their part. Calvin's accent as imitated by Grace sounds like an entirely different person than Calvin's accent as done by his narrator. It's off-putting.

Grabs You Right from the Beginning
Revisado: 12-05-23
I loved this book. Normally it takes a couple of chapters for me to really get sucked in to a book, but this one grabbed me right from the beginning. I couldn't stop listening. As I was going along, I thought I figured out the ending. It looked for a minute like I was right, but then the ending took a turn that I absolutely did not see coming. This book was thrilling from beginning to end.

Had me hooked from beginning to end!
Revisado: 09-15-23
I really enjoyed this book. It only took a few minutes to suck me in, and I found myself constantly eager to find out what would happen next. Early on I was getting "Haunting of Hill House" vibes, but it quickly moves on from that and becomes its own unique story. One small complaint is that there are a couple of elements introduced early on in the book that initially sound like they're going to play a major part in the story (the folk lore of the area), but they turn out to have nothing to do with the story at all. So why bother even mentioning it? And the epilogue was pointless. It didn't add anything to the story and was really confusing. Overall though, a really great book.

Historia
Photographer Isla Wilson is thrilled she's landed her dream job, but the clients who hired her are getting stranger by the day. It sounded so perfect—a month's assignment at the lush Scottish Highlands property of architect Alban McGregor, and his wife, Jessica. But in the woods, there's a playhouse with a chilling history. Two years ago, the McGregors' daughter Elodie was abducted and then died in that playhouse. The townspeople insist her abductor had to be a stranger in their town. Alban refuses to knock the playhouse down, even keeping a picture of it on his wall.

Interesting, but not believable
Revisado: 06-30-23
I'll admit that I never in my wildest dreams could have seen that end coming, but that's mostly because it was so completely far-fetched. It was an interesting story, but when it reached what felt like the natural conclusion, I checked and saw that I had over 3 hours left! After that point everything really went crazy. The amount of coincidences that had to happen in order for the ending to make sense are beyond belief.
