Historia
Kennedy, the thirty-fifth president of the United States, is often ranked among Americans’ most well-liked presidents. Yet what most Americans don’t know is that JFK’s historic presidency almost ended before it began—at the hands of a disgruntled sociopathic loner armed with dynamite. On December 11, 1960, shortly after Kennedy’s election and before his inauguration, a retired postal worker named Richard Pavlick waited in his car—a parked Buick—on a quiet street in Palm Beach, Florida.

It was interesting up to the end
Revisado: 04-27-25
He shouldn't have even gone into the assassination in November, since he glances over details and even gets some of those wrong. All to spew his lone nuttery. Just ignoring any of the released documents and decades of research as well as the Senate Select Committee on Assassinations in the 1970s. He made a book out of story that didn't even make national news, which was interesting in of itself.

As the day dawns on the fiftieth annual Hunger Games, fear grips the districts of Panem. This year, in honor of the Quarter Quell, twice as many tributes will be taken from their homes. Back in District 12, Haymitch Abernathy is trying not to think too hard about his chances. All he cares about is making it through the day and being with the girl he loves.

The better of the two prequel novels so far
Revisado: 04-06-25
I thought this book was really well done. I enjoyed the story and the manipulations of President Snow to shape the Capitol's narrative of the games to the districts. The ending was poetic from Snow's point of view. It sets Haymitch off on the path we later pick up with him in The Hunger Games. Every game since his "victory" just eats away his soul. If I have one compliant it does have a lot of characters we would later meet in Catching Fire, however it does leave some of those connections nebulous. It was a good read and I am looking forward to the film

The Nazi fascination with the occult is legendary, yet today it is often dismissed as Himmler's personal obsession or wildly overstated for its novelty. Preposterous though it was, however, supernatural thinking was inextricable from the Nazi project. The regime enlisted astrology and the paranormal, paganism, Indo-Aryan mythology, witchcraft, miracle weapons, and the lost kingdom of Atlantis in reimagining German politics and society and recasting German science and religion.

An interesting book
Revisado: 04-06-25
On one hand, it worked to the allies advantage that the Nazis were distracted with some of these occult beliefs since it took away from focusing on fighting the war, and hindered their efforts. It also led to the NAZIs doing some of the most horrific things to people, and committing crimes against humanity. It was interesting to see how some of these stories were used in propaganda in the Reich to perpetuate their reign.

Historia
In the gripping Never Panic Early, Fred Haise, Lunar Module Pilot for Apollo 13, offers a detailed firsthand account of when disaster struck three days into his mission to the moon. An oxygen tank exploded, a crewmate uttered the now iconic words, “Houston, we’ve had a problem here,” and the world anxiously watched as one of history’s most incredible rescue missions unfolded. Haise brings listeners into the heart of his experience on the challenging mission—considered NASA’s finest hour—and reflects on his life and career as an Apollo astronaut.

I was expecting more from the book
Revisado: 01-01-25
I really like Fred Haise, I have seen him at Houston Space Center and at the Cradle of Aviation speaking on Apollo 13 and his work on the Enterprise approach and landing tests. I was hoping for more of what i heard at the lectures in the book. He had a very interesting career. The book starts out a little slow, but once you he gets into the Space Program the book picks up the pace. I also found his post NASA career really interesting.

Historia
In the late 1800s, the city of Austin, Texas, was on the cusp of emerging from an isolated western outpost into a truly cosmopolitan metropolis. But beginning in December 1884, Austin was terrorized by someone equally as vicious and, in some ways, far more diabolical than London's infamous Jack the Ripper. For almost exactly one year, the Midnight Assassin crisscrossed the entire city, striking on moonlit nights, using axes, knives, and long steel rods to rip apart women from every race and class.

Revisado: 10-23-24
I got this book recommendation when I did the Austin Ghost tour since the murders happened in the area of the tour. The book was interesting and I learned more about what they talked about on the tour. It was interesting how the press sensationalized it, and the murders were used to attack political opponents,

Revisado: 10-12-24
I decided to give this book a listen after hearing how good it was, and in addition I needed something to listen to while I was building the LEGO Lunar Rover. I figured I would learn more about the vehicle I was building. It was really interesting and I appreciated the details on the development and production of the LRV. It was interesting to learn how it actually worked.

Historia
Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have. Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario.

Terrifying how quickly it can all end
Revisado: 08-12-24
If you remember the Day After from the 1980s, well this book is just as impactful. This gives you the mechanics of how the system all works. It is crazy how unprepared the politicians are to deal with this. The system is also very fragile given all the potential accidents that have happened in the past. I really liked the historical notes that are throughout the scenario. It seems like Annie's other books were going to lead to this one eventually. I can't wait to see what she digs up next.

Historia
April 25, 1986 in Chernobyl was a turning point in world history. The disaster not only changed the world’s perception of nuclear power and the science that spawned it, but also our understanding of the planet’s delicate ecology. With the images of the abandoned homes and playgrounds beyond the barbed wire of the 30-kilometer Exclusion Zone, the rusting graveyards of contaminated trucks and helicopters, the farmland lashed with black rain, the event fixed for all time the notion of radiation as an invisible killer.

A very good comprehensive look at the disaster
Revisado: 07-30-24
I really liked this book. It goes into the background of the Soviet nuclear power program and the shortcomings of the design. The book goes into detail of the disaster and the political coverup that followed, as well as the impact the disaster had on nuclear power around the world. I thought this was a great book to read after seeing the HBO miniseries

To boldly go....
Revisado: 07-22-24
I thought this book did a great job of capturing the Challenger Accident the way we experienced it in 1986. The book also captured the event from various perspectives including that of the families, and astronauts. It is a great companion to "Truth Lies and O-rings." The retelling of the last flight of Challenger brought tears to my eyes, it was like reliving what I saw on TV but from the perspective of the participants in the flight. I found the politics of the Roger's Commission interesting, and how it guided the process of the investigation. I miss seeing the shuttles fly. I wish the book focused on some of the shuttle's triumphs at the end...like the various Hubble Missions, and building the space station. I would recommend some other books as well to round out this one.. Into the Black, Bold They Rise, Wheels Stop, Handprints on Hubble, Truth Lies and O-rings among others.

Revisado: 06-03-24
Give the details in the book it seems like we need to reign in the CIA especially after the war on terror and the abuse of power by Bush and Obama getting the rubber stamp of Republicans and Democrats in Congress. The CIA now is like it used to be, lots of dirty deals going on behind the scenes getting us into situations the American Public is unaware of and meanwhile it affects us all. This was the last book I needed to read from Annie Jacobsen. I am looking forward to reading her latest book Nuclear War
