Historia
The first vice president to become president on the death of the incumbent, John Tyler (1790-1862) was derided by critics as "His Accidency." In this biography of the 10th president, Edward P. Crapol challenges depictions of Tyler as a die-hard advocate of states' rights, limited government, and a strict interpretation of the Constitution. Instead, he argues, Tyler manipulated the Constitution to increase the executive power of the presidency. Crapol also highlights Tyler's faith in America's national destiny and his belief in boundless territorial expansion.

Excellent as it Could Be
Revisado: 12-22-19
Having listened to nearly 200 Audible books l would give high ranks to this well written documentary that addresses difficult subjects & issues. The narrator was equally talented & fluid. I can’t imagine someone ranking this presentation low unless they were extraordinarily sensitive on the issues discussed, were not familiar with Presidential biographies, or were expecting some sort of Hollywood ride from an 1800s simple world. I salute the author & enjoyed becoming familiar with the issues at hand during this era. Especially about the annexation of Texas, the fact that Britain’s flag once flew over Hawaii, & Britain also attempted to take Texas on the grounds of preventing it from becoming a slave state. Now Polk’s Presidency falls into sync better with me having previously finished his biography. Well Done.

Excellent Effort, But
Revisado: 03-17-19
The book has tremendous effort, yet I buy a book from a major hedge fund to expect to learn investment strategies that helped him achieve his distinguished accomplishments. If Michael Jordan wrote a book but spent 90% of the content on his favorite cooking recipes rather than basketball it wouldn't be as appreciated I'm sure. I also find the legalities of these company policies a bit unnecessary, overkill, & politically oriented. For example, the baseball cards for each employee to evaluate their performance; a great idea but if "managers" get to evaluate their staff I'm certain many commentaries will be politically spirited rather than true. Real baseball cards show statistics based on player's performance; them vs the ball, not a written evaluation from their managers which could easily be abused to devalue a player. That type of politically oriented environment breeds paranoia and would feel like your tip toeing on egg shells not to break any "company policies" or rub any managers the wrong way. Warren Buffett & Charlie Munger have a more favorable laissez-faire approach; we'll train you, then trust you do the job, get the stats, or you're out. No 1000 page manuals subject to Marshall law, surveys, manager's breathing down your neck; just perform, or your subs coming in to replace you. Again, great effort, but to be radically transparent; overkill on policy & legalities of management. Focus on good training, measured return on an individual's investment, great hiring techniques, and those that can't perform; give them notice what will happen if they don't & kindly offer to be a good reference when they're looking for a new career. Great book, but if other managers are reading this book I want to prevent such legal company policies from spreading that give managers so much leverage to devalue a person just because they can. Judge on statistical performance, not on a manager's "personal opinion" often corrupted by jealousy or blocking out a potential rival for their managerial position.

Historia
On May 18, 1860, William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. When Lincoln emerged as the victor, his rivals were dismayed and angry. Throughout the turbulent 1850s, each had energetically sought the presidency as the conflict over slavery was leading inexorably to secession and civil war.

Fulfilling & Epic
Revisado: 08-25-18
From the beginnings of Lincoln, to his inauguration, and a view of the events of the Civil War from the perspective of the front porch of the White House. Revealing the man himself as well as the Presidential glow known to most. Fluidity of writing like waters flowing down a backwoods creek surely to bring the soul into the age & relics of the past.

Full, Comprehensive, & Honest Presentation of a simple man with a brilliant mind. Probably the most significant force in steering America in a new direction of democracy by & for the people as opposed to many others who wanted to walk in the footsteps of the British Crown form of government. He popularized this democratic perspective amongst the people & others followed suit creating such a strong force that the opposing party, the Federalist (monarchist in many perspectives) was eventually dissolved. I completely understand why he is heralded, he chose to see what America could be, not what has always been.

Historia
Our planet is suffering from serious environmental problems: coastal flooding due to severe storms caused in part by atmospheric pollution, diminishing natural resources such as clean water, and so on. But while these problems plague planet Earth, two-thirds of our globe is ocean. The seas can be home to pioneers, seasteaders, who are willing to homestead the Blue Frontier. Oil platforms and cruise ships already inhabit the waters; now it's time to take the next step to full-fledged ocean civilizations.

Quite a presentation. This Seasteading Project really felt like a Disney Epcot at Sea. Disney already full force in the cruise industry might be a prime candidate to partner with on this venture.

Historia
The protection of cyberspace has become a vital national interest because of its importance both to the economy and to military power. An attacker may tamper with networks to steal information for money or to disrupt operations. Future wars are likely to be carried out, in part or perhaps entirely, in cyberspace. It might therefore seem obvious that maneuvering in cyberspace is like maneuvering in other media, but nothing would be more misleading. Cyberspace has its own laws.

Needless Elaboration
Revisado: 05-31-17
Had this been a government report sent to my office as a sitting President I would refuse it on the ground of needless elaboration & refused to pay for it with taxpayers dollars. If carefully filtered all this information could have neatly been streamlined into a Threat Reaction chart outlining potential threats & threat reactions to combat threats. Number of pages doesn't improve the defense of our country; well thought, well filtered, then well presented information to act on does. I highly recommend this book be rethought & rewritten to be presented in a manner to respect the reader's time & be more useful to our national defense. Needless elaboration to fill pages doesn't fool me as research.

It is commonly believed that the Great Depression that began in 1929 resulted from a confluence of events beyond any one person's or government's control. In fact, as Liaquat Ahamed reveals, it was the decisions made by a small number of central bankers that were the primary cause of the economic meltdown, the effects of which set the stage for World War II and reverberated for decades.

Excellent
Revisado: 05-11-17
Probably the best thorough analysis of understanding exactly what the "Gold Standard " exactly is & how it proves as equally unnecessary & crippling to the growth of an economy. It left central banks in a catch 22 trying to manage economy; Lower interest rates too low = Gold would leave the country which would also lower the money supply (because money supply could only be a percentage of a nation's gold reserves) OR Raise interest rates too high to attract gold reserves & now the economy would be crippled by high interest rates. This book drives home how the gold standard was a great way to begin to build confidence in paper currency but eventually after a civilization trusts their currency & grows the gold standard inhibits the proper & required monetary policies used today that have proven much more generously effective.

Intelligence of Intelligence
Revisado: 12-15-16
Well done comprehensive insider view of DARPA & many other inner workings of American top level military defense projects. Very thorough, rich, informative. I did not pick up any spirit of bias for or against DARPA, but a straightforward presentation of facts, interviews, & need to know infrastructure of all the who, what, hows, & whys inside the Pentagon.
The beginning was dramatic & can throw one off that this may be a story telling drama, but the book quickly unfolds to read like a fact filled, well sourced, informative presentation that lives up to its title of thoroughly delving into the inner workings of the Pentagon.
For example, in the book it was learned from her interview with an insider that the Safety Defense Board, composed of Defense contractors has more decision making weight than the intellectually elite JASON scientist, composed of mostly college professors & scientist. Both I assume work in tandem for the same cause, but this doesn't surprise in the knowledge that defense contractors combined carry significantly more dough in their pockets.
Those are the kind of tidbits that bring the Pentagon down to size, more enlightened about how this committee relates to that & the other. Very well done, strong presentation.

Phenomenal
Revisado: 12-06-16
There are books that are great because of the articulate expertise of the author. And there are books that are phenomenal because of the vast hands on experience and expertise the author & those involved has had with the subject matter. This is one of those rare, powerful, phenomenal experiences of seeing America's most profound technological advancements in aviation through the eyes of its creators. It will leave you Jaw Dropped at the attention to meticulous details; from the tough to work with titanium used on the Blackbird down to the most minute screws used on the Blackbird to ensure a safe flight at ridiculous Mach speeds.
You will get all the backstory to the world renowned aviation flights that affected relations between world powers. You will see the real dangers Americans pilots faced during their reconnaissance missions. And you will see how the central visionary, Kelly Johnson, lead the vision of these projects, but required the input of many others at monstrous roadblocks to bring these ideas into useful reality.
It is one of those books that makes you proud to be American, that makes you proud that humanity will create, innovate, and bring all the intellectual resources into one place, for one purpose, to defend Mother Freedom around the globe. We will never let her down.

A military expert reveals how science fiction is fast becoming reality on the battlefield, changing not just how wars are fought, but also the politics, economics, laws, and ethics that surround war itself. Singer’s previous books foretold the rise of private military contractors and the advent of child soldiers - predictions that have proved all too accurate. Now he explores the greatest revolution in military affairs since the atom bomb: robotic warfare. We are now seeing a massive shift in military technology....

Very Comprehensive
Revisado: 12-06-16
Comprehensive enlightenment of the robotic, unmanned age of military weaponry. What is especially interesting is after this book I read Skunkworks, a book composed by Lockheed Martin executives in the 1990s & the end of this book they made projections about the future of the military from their 1990 eyes; you guessed it, unmanned vehicles, unmanned jets, etc.
The danger however of an overweighted robotics military are 1 radio frequency bomb could render an entire fleet of robotic weaponry useless & these robotics also are at risk of becoming hacked & used against friendlys. Very necessary, but a strong military should have many contingencies in place for the worst case scenarios.
