I want my six and a half hours back.
Revisado: 11-16-24
I don't read the synopsis of any book. I like to go in blind and be surprised. This book started off well enough, the story drawing me in. The various characters were relatively intriguing and I settled in for a good yarn. I assumed it was some sort of mystery or thriller, but it was more like watching teenagers interact. Immature, impulsive, entitled, insecure teenagers. But these were all adults, well, with the exception of Jackson.
I wanted to like this book, I really did. But it went along, drifting slowly downhill, then it just went faster and faster, before crashing into a brick wall.
*spoilers ahead*
Katie and Shawn were so ridiculously insecure and finicky, I wanted to scream. I pegged Albert and Irene as the busybodies they were fairly early in the story and at one point thought good grief, why are these Septuagenarians behaving like junior high school kids? And then the reason for all of the drama was just so stupid and I actually laughed out loud at the ending. This book was awful and I want my six and a half hours back. It doesn't deserve the 4 star rating it has.

Historia
June, 1993. Claire has been dumped in rural Indianola, Texas, to spend her whole vacation taking care of mean, sickly Grammy. There's nothing too remarkable about Indianola: It's run-down, shabby, and sweltering, a pindot on the Gulf Coast. Except there is something remarkable. Memories shimmer and change. Lizards whisper riddles under the pecan trees. People disappear as if they never existed. Yesterday keeps coming unspooled, like a video tape. And worst of all, a red-lightning storm from beyond our world may just wipe the whole town off the map.

So, so bad.
Revisado: 08-12-24
This audiobook was awful. I'm mad at myself for even finishing it, but I wanted to give it the benefit of the doubt.
It "reads" like it was penned by a 13 year old. It jumps around and switches gears so much that I need a neck brace for the whiplash. I found the style of stage notes narration almost condescending. The entire style of writing was like stage notes, devoid of any real emotion.
The characters were very one-dimensional and uninteresting. I felt nothing for any of them. The acting was terrible. I rolled my eyes multiple times throughout the audiobook, at ridiculous or cliché lines.
Wasted hours of my life. Ugh

Narrator does a nice job and has a pleasant voice. The story was interesting. But good god that other voice was SO obnoxious!! It was like nails on a chalkboard. What a hideous voice. I won't be able to listen anymore. lol I listen to podcasts before bed and every time that other voice came on I'd snap awake and tense up. Seriously. 🤣 ugh

Stereotypic predictable drivel
Revisado: 11-17-23
I haven't read Danielle Steele in probably 30 years, and now I know that was a good call.
This book was awful. The stereotypes, the ridiculous scenarios, the bland characters that you feel absolutely nothing for. It was so predictable it made me roll my eyes more than once. And the gawd awful narration. It reminded me of John O'Hurley's portrayal of J Peterman on Seinfeld.
I can't think of a single thing I liked about this book. Save yourself the hours. There are far better books to be read.

Awful main character

The main character is a judgmental, pretentious, spoiled brat. I couldn't stand her. How this novella got as good reviews as it did is beyond me.

😳 BE WARNED 🚫🚫🚫
Revisado: 08-13-23
I tried. I really did, but I REALLY struggled to finish this book.
I go through the Audible free catalog every so often and add books to my library based solely on their star rating and book cover. I have always enjoyed going in to a book blind. That's how I ended up with this in my library and I randomly hit "play" one day.
It started off ok, intriguing enough to keep my attention. And then it got...uncomfortable. And then it got more uncomfortable, so I stopped listening and went to read the reviews. I only read a few but several also mentioned feeling uncomfortable but that if you stuck with it, the story would get better.
They lied.
I mean yes, there were absolutely endearing moments of unconditional love, but putting lipstick on a pig doesn't change things.
•spoilers•
A 19 year old guy falls in love with an 8 year old girl. In the beginning it's more of a paternal love, him wanting to protect her. Then it moves into a deep, loving friendship, but you can see what's coming, and that feels really uncomfortable. Next thing you know, you've got a 13 year old girl giving a 24 year old man a hand job and it just gets worse from there. It's grooming, plain and simple. Made me sick
I spent so much of this book with furrowed brow. The ick factor was just too strong.
And then the story got even more uncomfortable and continued that way through to the end. When the book ended I felt like I need to shower to wash away the creepiness.
The book was well-written and the characters well-developed but damn, the story though! yeesh
Definitely NOT my cup of tea. I'm actually really surprised by the overwhelmingly positive reviews and praise.
This book really should come with trigger warnings and a pedophilia warning.
This was like 9 hours of nope for me.

Ten hours of meh
Revisado: 08-12-23
I haven't read Danielle Steel in many years but thought wth.I liked her well enough back in the day so thought I'd give it a shot.
It was a pretty slow start that within minutes had me questioning my choice, but then it started to pick up a little and you weren't sure where it was going. I thought it might redeem itself, and it did, but only for a few chapters. Then it was back to the syrupy, overly dramatic fluff that was eye-roll inducing.
There were elements to this story that, had they been explored more fully, could have really given this story some meat, but DS opted for the Hallmark Channel approach to writing. Ugh
Other reviews applaud the strength of the main character, but I really didn't feel that way. She was kind of pathetic, imo. She cowered to the step daughters bullying, she didn't do a single thing in the book without a man helping her, and all of the men that came into her life just happened to be obscenely wealthy, because yeah, that happens all the time.
A strong, fierce woman would have figured out how to do all of this without male saviors swooping in to save the day. But that's how a 77 year old author sees things, I guess.
Anyway, for me it was a swing and a miss. Not the worst book I've read, just entirely meh.

As close to perfect as a novel gets!
Revisado: 02-27-23
I was completely enamored of the characters. They had such depth. The story was intriguing and drew me in from the first page. Due to my anxiety, I struggle to keep focus and this piqued my interest enough that I was able to stay fully immersed in the story.
I cannot say enough good things about this book and its narration.
I'm blown away that it's her first novel and that she's so young. She clearly has a brilliant career ahead of her.
I definitely see this being made into a stellar movie! With Helen Mirrin as Tova. lol
