I’m having a hard time getting through this one. With every new book, they are getting smuttier. I’m no way a prude but these are supposed to be fantasy novels not erotica. This one has so much of it, it’s taking away from the main plot. I don’t think the reader is as bad as many reviews say she is. She overplays the sexy and some characters suddenly turned British. It does irk me when the tone is not consistent but with the situation, though. Like when the characters are supposed to be yelling or arguing and the narrator says it really slow and calm. I think I’m just used to the other voice more so this narrator’s deeper, huskier voice takes time to get used to

Good but not very original

I enjoyed the story but it’s nothing original. It feels like a combination of Twilight, the Hunger Games, and Harry Potter. Typical story tropes of a young girl doing whatever she needs to save her family, brooding over some mysterious (non human) lover who is has his own secrets, and then fighting against a powerful villain and their 3 impossible and deadly tasks.

This was painful to listen to.

For 7 hours, all he’s doing is walking and reminiscing. That’s is. Nothing else happens for 7 straight hours. Why is this so popular?

Funny and Educational

I usually don’t read /listen to nonfiction but book was recommended to me and it did not disappoint. The author really did her research and presented the material in such a way that is both entertaining and educational. This book is especially important in the light of this most recent plague/pandemic. It seems that despite the authors optimism for the human race, we’ve learned little in the past 1,000 years or so. Still making the same mistakes when it comes to dealing with disease.

Tries way too hard to be funny but fails

I couldn’t force myself to finish it. The plot moves so slowly because of the constant interruptions with the fake “commercial breaks” and “breaking news”. It’s like they are trying so hard to be funny that every line needs to be over saturated with jokes. Becomes too distracting.

It’s the kind of story that grabs your attention immediately and holds it till the end. Get ready to laugh and cry from the same sentence. The narrator does a fantastic job.

The performer was really great at all the accents and different voices. Really made the listening experience extra special.

Great Book - Terrible Reader

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The reader sounded like he was out of breath. The pauses were in all the wrong places and the inflection was all over the place. Ex. Instead of simply reading "Messua was kind to me", the reader reads, "Messua was kiiiiind (stretching out the word "kind")..then pause....to me"
