Historia
Young playwright Melina Green has just written a new work inspired by the life of her Elizabethan ancestor Emilia Bassano. But seeing it performed is unlikely, in a theater world where the playing field isn’t level for women. As Melina wonders if she dares risk failure again, her best friend takes the decision out of her hands and submits the play to a festival under a male pseudonym.

I considered quitting this book a few times while reading it. Emilia’s story was interesting enough to keep me going but Melina’s portion of the book was grating, cartoonish and oddly preachy. Emilia’s story probably made it worth it but I think the way it was structured was a swing and a miss. Overall, it wasn’t terrible but I also wouldn’t highly recommend.

Wonderful Story
Revisado: 07-15-24
Captivating story, likeable characters (for the most part!) and overall a wholesome read that soothes the soul. The narrators were also talented and not annoying.

Couldn’t put it down
Revisado: 12-13-23
I listen to audible every night and I genuinely looked forward to this story at the end of each day. The main character’s imperfections gave a realistic portrayal of someone living in this complicated time in history. As a South Carolinian, Boyd captured the enchantment of this land and the stories it has to tell. The narration was fantastic too. Five stars!

Amazing Story but…
Revisado: 01-22-23
This story is so beautiful and unforgettable. I absolutely loved the characters, BUT the narrator for Naomi was painful to listen to. I had to get the print version for some of her parts. The male narrator was perfect for the role of John, however. I really think they should consider recasting and hire a different woman to read the parts for Naomi because it really detracted from this incredible tale of adventure, grief, inner-conflict and love. I’d highly recommend the print version, but not the audio book.

Historia
Alice Wright marries handsome American Bennett Van Cleve hoping to escape her stifling life in England. But small-town Kentucky quickly proves equally claustrophobic, especially living alongside her overbearing father-in-law. So, when a call goes out for a team of women to deliver books as part of Eleanor Roosevelt’s new traveling library, Alice signs on enthusiastically. The leader, and soon Alice's greatest ally, is Margery, a smart-talking, self-sufficient woman who's never asked a man's permission for anything.
