Historia
From his earliest days growing up in Canada, Deryck Whibley was a punk who loved music and couldn’t wait to achieve something bigger and better than the humble path that lay before him. Whibley was raised by a single mom and their small family constantly moved from place to place, so he was used to being the new kid, starting fights (or finishing them), and connecting with people who shared his sensibility for chaotic fun and loud music. Sum 41 was born of a group of friends who loved to jam, shared a DIY ethos, and were determined to be rock stars one day.

A Must Read
Revisado: 10-17-24
A must read for anyone who has ever listened to any Sum 41 song. It’s a vulnerable, hilarious, tragic and intriguing memoir that gives a profound new meaning to all of Deryck’s song writing. I could not stop listening! Hearing the author read it himself gave that deeper connection to the story as well. Definitely a lot of traumatic themes and insight into the dark side of the music industry. Thank you for sharing your story Deryck!

Historia
Samantha Irby’s career has taken her to new heights. She dodges calls from Hollywood and flop sweats on the red carpet at premieres (well, one premiere). But nothing is ever as it seems online, where she can crop out all the ugly parts. Irby got a lot of weird emails about Carrie Bradshaw, and not only is there diarrhea to avoid, but now—anaphylactic shock. She is turned away from restaurants for being inappropriately dressed and looks for the best ways to cope, i.e., reveling in the offerings of QVC and adopting a deranged pandemic dog.

DO NOT listen to this on a plane.
Revisado: 10-06-24
This is my first Samantha Irby book and I’m about to just read everything she’s written in quick succession. This was one of (if not the) most laugh out loud funny books I’ve ever listened to. The only criticism I have is there should be a warning about how insane you’ll look when you’re crying laughing alone in your airplane seat, like I did, when I started listening. I recommend to everyone who will be listening in the privacy of their own homes and cars so you can piss yourself laughing in peace.

Historia
Leslie Jamison has become one of our most beloved contemporary voices, a scribe of the real, the true, the complex. But while Jamison has never shied away from challenging material—scouring her own psyche and digging into our most unanswerable questions across four books—Splinters enters a new realm. In her first memoir, Jamison turns her unrivaled powers of perception on some of the most intimate relationships of her life: her consuming love for her young daughter, a ruptured marriage once swollen with hope, and the shaping legacy of her own parents’ complicated bond.

Felt too self indulgent - even for a memoir
Revisado: 09-27-24
Look, I’m a mother of a 2 yr old going through a divorce with her father. In many ways this book spoke to me about depths of feeling that made me feel less alone. But by the end, I felt the deadline for the draft to be done - the entire last hour and a half of this book is useless repetition of the rest of it. It feels like a story trying too hard to come to conclusions it’s not yet ready to make. There isn’t enough vulnerability or self discovery evident yet to really be affected by the work emotionally. I wouldn’t recommend unless you are literally going through a divorce with a toddler.
Tell us the rest of the story in 10 years Leslie, I want to know how you keep growing.

Courageous, beautiful story telling. Michelle Williams performance is worth a second read if you have the hard copy. Makes you rethink so much of what’s “normal” in society.
THANK YOU for your story Britney ❤️

Tragic and beautiful
Revisado: 05-29-22
A story that will challenge you to look at the world differently. Those claiming this book romanticizes pedophilia have missed the point of the story entirely. Sometimes the line between good and evil isn’t so obvious. I liked how this book explores the reality of human nature. There are no perfect people - and maybe trying to squeeze a real world filled with grey into black or white boxes is one of humanities biggest flaws. Listened to this in just 2 days - well worth the listen for those in a strong enough mental place to digest graphic scenes involving children.

Too devastating to be enjoyable to read
Revisado: 04-03-22
I finished this book only by skipping over some long, painful sections filled with endless violence against women and series of events that continued to get worse and worse at each chapter. I absolutely loved The Four Winds, and while this novel shared some of the same themes- I could not get past the endless excuses Cora made to her daughter for why she just let a damaged, abusive man dictate their entire lives. Relief for these characters never came quick enough, and even when it did, there was more tragedy around the bend. I loved the detailed descriptions of Alaska and life in such a harsh yet beautiful place - but the story was infuriating for 3/4 of the book. I recommend skipping this one and reading The Four Winds or Nightingale instead.

Texas, 1921. A time of abundance. The Great War is over, the bounty of the land is plentiful, and America is on the brink of a new and optimistic era. But for Elsa Wolcott, deemed too old to marry in a time when marriage is a woman’s only option, the future seems bleak. Until the night she meets Rafe Martinelli. By 1934, the world has changed; millions are out of work and drought has devastated the Great Plains. Elsa must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or leave it behind and go west, to California, in search of a better life for her family.

In 1970s Baltimore, 14-year-old Mary Jane loves cooking with her mother, singing in her church choir, and enjoying her family’s subscription to the Broadway Showtunes of the Month record club. Shy, quiet, and bookish, she’s glad when she lands a summer job as a nanny for the daughter of a local doctor. A respectable job, Mary Jane’s mother says. In a respectable house.

Great Escape to Simpler Times
Revisado: 10-18-21
I am so glad I listened to this novel instead of reading it!! The performance is half the fun of this coming of age tale of a 14 yr old joining a quirky family for the summer along with the biggest celebrity couple of the times in the mid 70’s. This is definitely not the kind of book I usually choose- but I found myself transported back to being 14 again and all the uncertainty that comes with it. Recommend for anyone reading to connect with characters on a human level and to take a break from all the fast paced, intensity of being an adult in the 2020’s!

Historia
Lydia Quixano Pérez lives in the Mexican city of Acapulco. She runs a bookstore. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while there are cracks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, fairly comfortable. When Lydia’s husband’s tell-all profile of Javier, the jefe of the newest drug cartel that has gruesomely taken over the city, is published, none of their lives will ever be the same.

Heart-breaking, captivating, I couldn’t put it down
Revisado: 07-25-21
This is one of the best novels I have read in a long time. The heart-wrenching tale of Lydia & Luca’s escape from Acapulco kept me transfixed from chapter to chapter. Great character development considering how many side characters are introduced and descriptions that had my heart pounding as if I were running alongside them throughout the journey.
It’s easy to criticize the author’s heritage and plot points - but this story succeeds in every level to pull at the humanity of its audience and let American readers feel some of the devastation and desperation of their migrant neighbors.
I never write reviews - but this book left me changed.
Read the story to find out for yourself.
