An insightful exploration of index funds
Revisado: 02-01-23
I have had a simplistic view of index funds, and was convinced I should get an account going, then in the future transfer all my available resources there. Guess what- it's not quite as simple as we have been led to believe. I found the book very informative and listenable, but what impressed me most was the author's independence from any specific way of investing. I was fully convinced that I was getting a more candid overview than I could have heard from a professional investment advisor. The book ends with a clear and very helpful analysis of our best options as private investors. An excellent book.
The reader was very good- smooth, clear, and animated. I dinged her one star for pronouncing the word epitome the way it looks instead of the way it is pronounced ;-)

Historia
From June of 2019 until his firing by President Trump after the November 2020 election, Secretary Mark T. Esper led the Department of Defense through an unprecedented time in history—a period marked by growing threats and conflict abroad, a global pandemic unseen in a century, the greatest domestic unrest in two generations, and a White House seemingly bent on breaking accepted norms and conventions for political advantage. A Sacred Oath is Secretary Esper’s unvarnished and candid memoir of those extraordinary and dangerous times, and includes events and moments never before told.

Details of events you already knew about
Revisado: 05-29-22
I have always considered Esper to be more ethical and principled than others in the Trump administration, and that turned out to be pretty much the entire subject of this book. I expected lots of insider information, but there was little of that. it is almost entirely about incidents that were reported in the press, but rewritten to be more favorable for the author. I cannot recommend the book with much enthusiasm.

Historia
Throughout history, humans have been driven by the quest for two cherished ideals: community and freedom. The two don’t coexist easily. We value individuality and self-reliance, yet are utterly dependent on community for our most basic needs. In this intricately crafted and thought-provoking book, Sebastian Junger examines the tension that lies at the heart of what it means to be human.

Superb story. Not what I expected
Revisado: 06-13-21
After hearing the author in an interview about the meaning and political significance of freedom, I expected a similar exploration given in greater depth. The book turned out to be a detailed and very engaging tale of a long hike through the valleys and hills of Pennsylvania. Brought into the story were bits of history that were often too graphic for my taste, and as part of the larger tale, the ways that the whole experience related to the many definitions of freedom. The author was also the reader, and was equally brilliant at both tasks.

Historia
Donald Trump's campaign chairman went to jail. So did his personal lawyer. His long-time political consigliere was convicted of serious federal crimes, and his national security advisor pled guilty to others. Career intelligence agents and military officers were alarmed enough by the president's actions that they alerted senior government officials and ignited the impeachment process. Yet despite all this, a years-long inquiry led by special counsel Robert Mueller, and the third impeachment of a president in American history, Donald Trump survived to run for re-election. Why?

Four years of news retold with the missing details
Revisado: 08-30-20
Toobin has done a masterful job of collecting, amplifying, and analyzing the sordid history of Trump's corruption, mendacity, and self-dealing. He has filled in, through his own extensive research, the details that we did not hear as these events were taking place. The pace is slow enough to be thorough, yet fast enough to hold the attention. The delivery, like the substance of the book, was professional and very listenable.
Because we have lived through the story, parts of which seem to be only weeks in the past, I did not find it as riveting as political books that have brought whole new bodies of information, say the one by Trump's niece, or the best of Woodward's books. Nonetheless, Toobin has provided us with a competent and detailed reference to the unfortunate history of the Trump years.

Few have been a member of Donald Trump’s inner orbit longer than Omarosa Manigault Newman. Their relationship has spanned 15 years - through four television shows, a presidential campaign, and a year by his side in the most chaotic, outrageous White House in history. But that relationship has come to a decisive and definitive end, and Omarosa is finally ready to share her side of the story in this explosive, jaw-dropping account.

Ms. Omarosa is now my friend
Revisado: 08-20-18
I used to believe almost nothing from this lady, but I cannot remember exactly what I based that on- her old TV character? The inexplicable association of an African American with a gang of racists? I have to say her book makes sense- her stock with me went way up once I saw where her improbable association with Trump came from.
I find the details of her story fascinating. She dislikes the same players that I dislike and goes easy on the ones that I thought less objectionable. She knows all of them better than I do, and I was glad to learn more about them. She got emotional only with regard to racism. You could read the whole thing as the story of her denial of Trump"s racism, then her slowly coming to realize the truth. She did not crap all over Trump, but recognized both strengths and weaknesses. She provided details of his character disorders and clear accounts of her evidence. She also gave her reasons for thinking he is sliding into dementia.
If the book is full of lies, that means I already believed whatever stories she made up.

Originally released in fall 2017, The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump was a runaway best seller. Alarmed Americans and international onlookers wanted to know: What is wrong with him? That question still plagues us. The Trump administration has proven as chaotic and destructive as its opponents feared, and the man at the center of it all remains a cipher.

Experts discuss the world's biggest problem
Revisado: 10-13-17
This important book consists of stand-alone articles written by 27 mental health professionals. The articles necessarily differ in style and overall quality, but the majority are very informative.
Almost every discussion of psychiatric symptoms is right on target, with abundant examples in each case. If you think our president might suffer from narcissism, sociopathy, bipolar disorder, or cognitive decline, you are right- these authors make an excellent case for a combination of those dangerous conditions.
The most important conclusion of every article is that we are faced with a leader who is unfit to lead, and who could easily drag the world into a nuclear war in the service of his fragile ego. Solving the problem is more difficult than diagnosing it, but one chapter even discusses the application of the 25th amendment.

Some perspective on the Russian story
Revisado: 10-09-17
I picked up this book to look for background on the ever-expanding story of Russian interference in our own government. It was quite helpful in providing context and background information for understanding Russia under Putin and the oligarchs.
I would say that this book was more like an adventure novel than a history. Writing style and performance both contributed to that sense, and the feeling of a work of fiction detracted from the authority of the book and its author. In spite of that, I find the story line convincing and an important basis for understanding the apparently close relationship between our nation's main foreign rival and our current chaotic and authoritarian executive branch.
A minimum of searching on the Internet brought up important connections that followed the book's publication. For example, I now have a better understanding of Natalia Veselnitskaya- where she came from and where she fits in the fishy goings-on at the White House.

Al Franken, Giant of the Senate is a book about an unlikely campaign that had an even more improbable ending: the closest outcome in history and an unprecedented eight-month recount saga, which is pretty funny in retrospect. It's a book about what happens when the nation's foremost progressive satirist gets a chance to serve in the United States Senate and, defying the low expectations of the pundit class, actually turns out to be good at it.

Senator Franken does both his jobs brilliantly
Revisado: 06-27-17
As always, Al Franken has given us a brilliant and entertaining presentation of the core issues of our divided country. From this book you can learn a great deal about the way our elected officials do business and who they really work for. We can hope that Mr. Franken keeps doing both his jobs: trying to fix our broken government and keeping us entertained.
