Historia
I live for the pain; it's what drives me to keep moving. I thought I was ready to finally live. Until...my brother, Alex; he throws me into the fire - right into the place I could never control myself, the one place I never want to be again. When I put my hands on people, they get hurt. Things happen that bring me back to that night. The one that will forever torment me. I'm doing fine, keeping to myself in order to ensure no one gets hurt by me. Then along comes Lyric, and all I want to do is touch her, to put my hands in places that I know will only lead to her being crushed by me.

Narration
Revisado: 04-06-25
The male narrator's female voices made this difficult to listen to, I guess describing it as cartoonish would be as close as I can get. The story itself was just OK.

Historia
At thirty two, Victory Shackleford is arguably overweight, undeniably frumpish and the love of her life is a dog. She still lives at home with her father—an eccentric retired Admiral who she considers reckless, irresponsible, and totally incapable of looking after himself. Her father on the other hand thinks Victory is a boring nagging harpy with no imagination or sense of adventure and what's more, he's determined to get her married off. Unfortunately there's no one in the picturesque yachting town of Dartmouth that Tory is remotely interested in, despite her father's best efforts.

Not what I expected.
Revisado: 07-19-24
I did not care for the main character and to me the story like me was weak and not comical at all. I am going to reserve judgement on the female narrator as it may have been the character and story that made the narration vapid.

What does it take to be secure in our sense of belonging and self-worth? We may hustle to attain this security through achievements, meeting expectations, or repeating affirmations to ourselves - but Dr. Brené Brown's research has shown there is ultimately one obstacle to our sense of worthiness. “Shame is the barrier,” she teaches, “and building shame resilience is how we overcome it.”

I was only disappointed because I didn't look at the length.
The material is important and the knowledge is important, I wish it had been more than 2 hours.

Enjoyable story, but the narration!
Revisado: 08-22-22
Books 2 & 3 would have been so much more enjoyable with a different narrator for the female voice. The narrator's voice for the females sounds like a cartoon character.

Like watching paint dry
Revisado: 09-21-21
This would have been better with a different narrator who could speak a man's voice more convincingly.
I found this depressing, mostly hopeless, and lacking the excitement of continuing listening. I did overtime listen all the way to the end just to be fair about my review.

This program is read by the author.
Marc Brackett is a professor in Yale University’s Child Study Center and founding director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. In his 25 years as an “emotion scientist”, he has developed a remarkably effective plan to improve the lives of children and adults - a blueprint for understanding our emotions and using them wisely so that they help, rather than hinder, our success and well-being. The core of his approach is a legacy from his childhood, from an astute uncle who gave him permission to feel.

Disappointed.
Revisado: 06-04-20
The reader was easy to listen to, and the pace was good. I kept listening all the way to the end hoping I would come away with new understanding but it never happened. The author illustrates the importance of knowing and regulating our own emotions, and recommends meditation as one regulator, as well as getting enough sleep, etc.
He also talks about the value of understanding others emotions.
None of it was new information to me, I wanted more tools in my toolbox.

Revisado: 04-22-18
Would you listen to Eating in the Light of the Moon again? Why?
I will be buying a hard copy so I can write, highlight and reread certain passages.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Eating in the Light of the Moon?
The first 5 minutes had me in tears as it felt like someone understood me and I knew I was OK, my feelings were valid and I was not alone in the way I feel about eating.
Have you listened to any of Arika Rapson’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I liked the reader's voice better at the end than in the beginning. At times her voice seemed to lack some emotion.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I tried to listen to the book all in one day, but got weary and needed an hour and a half to go.
Any additional comments?
I would highly recommend this book to anyone struggling with food disorders, although she does use storytelling to illustrate some important points, it makes the book more enjoyable and keeps it from getting too clinical. Dr. Johnston gives you tools to use to start telling your own story. My biggest take away is the comfort of knowing I am not alone in always feeling different, it is OK to be very sensitive, and I can recover.

Misleading
Revisado: 04-20-18
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I would not have purchased and listened to this book had I known it was the author's version of religious ministery. It also has many advertisements for her blog and website which is how she got out of debt. Be prepared to hear a lot of recited scripture. I did listen to the end, however, do not have any new tools to tackle debt. My takeaway is, do not spend what you don't have and God will provide.
What three words best describe Michelle Lasley’s performance?
The reader was clear, but her emoting came across to me as one of pity.
