Historia
Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

An awe-inspiring, unforgettable story of a remarkable man
Revisado: 07-05-23
I am still a bit hypnotized -just finishing the last chapter of this audiobook. This remarkable man and his story, the author’s amazing, absorbing way of capturing both, and the narrator’s superb ability to give voice to the words and characters have kept me mesmerized for days and some weeks (listening at every moment possible between work/tasks). This is the best audiobook to which I have ever listened. I will mull over the story and inspiration it’s generated for many more days and weeks to come.

Historia
In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the next Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” promised to revolutionize the medical industry with its breakthrough device, which performed the whole range of laboratory tests from a single drop of blood. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion.

The scientific and technical details I hoped for
Revisado: 01-06-22
I first learned of Theranos in 2013 after taking a new job as clinical lab director for a pharmaceutical company. I'd had this role in other labs for decades so was well-experienced with lab instrumentation and regulatory requirements; but this was a discovery research lab - focused on assessment of nonclinical, mostly rodent data. Hence, minimal blood volumes for reliable data were our ever-present goal. After being asked about Theranos and if we could learn or beneift from them, I researched every public avail. info. piece I could find and within short time concluded this was not a peer-reviewed, nor regulatory authority-assessed instrument or testing method, hence not a reliable route for any testing. I was not alone, essentially every formally-trained clinical diagnostic lab director that looked into the company would have come to this conclusion, The shocking aspect of this story then, is how gulible large biotech investors are -which is to essentially present day. This tale, this audiobook shows just how ignorant but cocksured investors enabled this company to deceive doctors and patients for more than a decade - never consulting with actual experts in the field for which they were investing millions$. Only government regulatory bodies were obligated to retain the experts in the area - and ultimately, that was the downfall of this deceptive company. The book answered all my clawing "need-to-know" questions about all the steps in how this came about, it's a fascinating story written/taped in an enthralling manner to keep listeners fullly engaged throughout.

I had to force myself to listen at least 30 mins..
Revisado: 12-17-18
This was a striking disappointment (I didn’t expect much as an audio “diet book” – and it was worst than that...). The author cannot write well (that is, I don’t think this would appeal to readers of any background and level of scientific/nutirtional knowledge) and the book is poorly laid out – no clear structure for sections/chapters. There is truly nothing I was able to gain from the audio ramblings - which do not cover concrete scientific rationale and/or study results (which is what I was expecting because of author's strongly-promoted credentials - as well as the high protein animal-products promoted). Instead, there is a lot of promotion of the authors company’s products and recipes that take a full day to make bulk quantities to freeze (which suits few of our lives).

Gave me a far better and wanted understanding of our current day world
Revisado: 12-19-17
This was a great listen!! In particular, the contrasts between the Guilded age and Progressive era were so insightful -and really enlightened me to historical social and political patterns in the US (and some for developed world overall) that apply to our current day situation. It gave me a much wanted understanding of what in the last 2 centuries has led up to today's US social, political and economic nuances -and even some sense and comfort of the future.
