I made myself keep listening… until the rape!

Scott Brick was just as good as usual. I have several books narrated by him. The problem here was the story. I tried it out on a recommendation. “If you liked that, you’ll like this” comments on a FB group. So I listened through the internal monologue about leprosy and divorce and shunning. I’m not entertained by stories of self loathing, but I pushed on. This was the set-up for something better, right? Besides, I have a hard and fast rule that I have to get through the first three chapters before I can give up on a book. So I get thru the old man and his message, and the transportation to somewhere else. He meets nice people who welcome him to their home and to a celebration. And then he rapes their young adult daughter. DONE!!

A more military Star Wars

I love R.C. Bray and could listen to him read a cereal box, so the performance was great. The characters were interesting and very familiar. Like the unintelligible animal-like partner of the space pirate. Or the very bad Admiral. Or the protocol robot. Or the young princess in trouble. And the Rebellion. It was entertaining, but not to the point that I *must* get the next book.

I loved Orphan Black, so hearing Tatiana narrating this book was like listening to Cosima tell the story. The original recording was good, but this is so much better! The story was taken out of YA fiction and brought up to the grown up level of entertainment.

good but not engaging

I like the author and the narrator. The story was ok, but I never felt that "one more chapter" tug. The characters were ok, but I never felt drawn to them. I'm disappointed that the two families never seemed to do more than pass on the street. I would have enjoyed having Don and Vinny become friends.

Well written, well read

The trials and tribulations of a boy becoming a warrior. Overall, the story was enjoyable. It took a while to really grab me. Some advice for anyone giving it a try - hang in there until Tau gets his face scar.
The narrator has a very pleasant voice. Somber but not monotone. He could have been a little more excited during the fights, but, considering how often they occur, it may have changed the whole tone of the story. The voice he uses speaks of pride and determination.
The only thing I had difficulty with was the names. They have a tribal sound to them, and some were very similar to others, so I had to rely on context to determine who was in the scene.
Overall, I'm glad I hung in there.

If not for Netflix....

If not for Netflix, I wouldn't have listened to it. For sure not past the first overly embellished sex scene. The mystery of "who killed the rich guy" had enough layers to keep you guessing, but overall it made me think of "Heaven Can Wait" crossed with "Blade Runner."
The narrator is one of my favorites, and he didn't disappoint.

Narrator forgot which voices to use

All the Lannisters sounded like Tyrion. Even Cersei. All the women sounded like old crones, including Aryans and Dany. The knights all sounded like bags of hot air. Do you see the direction this is going?

Susan Erickson is the perfect narrator for anything Nora Roberts writes! The characters are clever and witty, and the story line revolves around more than just the main quest.
