Siobhan Harris doesn’t think of her minimum-wage life in Manhattan as aspirational, but when her debut novel is published, she becomes an instant bestseller and a romance sensation. With fame comes foes, however, and Siobhan finds herself embroiled in a Twitter feud that’s about to change the course of her career just as it’s beginning.

Couldn’t finish it.
Revisado: 03-19-25
From the first chapter I had a feeling I wouldn’t like this book. The writing isn’t great - seems more like a fan fiction novel or like the one she described in those first chapters - amateur writing from an unpublished author. The male protagonist was eminently unlikable. And the male narrator did a piss poor job of representing a man from New Orleans.
Usually I can power through even mediocre books, but between the painful prose, Siobhan being a doormat, and the male lead… I quit this one.

Historia
Washington, DC, 1950. Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House, a down-at-the-heels all-female boardinghouse in the heart of the nation’s capital where secrets hide behind white picket fences. But when the lovely, mysterious widow Grace March moves into the attic room, she draws her oddball collection of neighbors into unlikely friendship. Grace’s weekly attic-room dinner parties and window-brewed sun tea become a healing balm on all their lives, but she hides a terrible secret of her own.

Outstanding
Revisado: 09-05-24
Although I’m not usually a fan of historical fiction, Kate Quinn does such an outstanding job of thoroughly researching the time period of her writing and using her research and the depth of her characters to bring history to life. I loved the richness of characters and the many stories being brought together in such a charming way.
Saskia does her usual wonderful job of differentiating the various characters and bringing each to life.
Bravo to you both!

Self righteous and judgy
Revisado: 08-27-24
I’ve listened to several books by this author just because I bought them at the same time based on a recommendation. In each, the internal, and occasionally external , dialogue of the characters is appallingly judgy and critical - of thin people, people with more financial means than the character, (in this book) Americans/New Yorkers, and the list goes on. The implication is that the character’s way, whatever it is in the particular book, is far superior to any other way of doing things. To listen to the internal dialogue of such mean spirited characters is, quite frankly, unpleasant and exhausting.
The narrator really needs to work on her American accents. They’re awful.

Narrator is awful
Revisado: 11-26-23
Story is fine; sweet. The narrator ruins it, though. She does an awful job on the male voices, especially Johnny’s, and inaccurately portrays tone, sighs, whispers, etc. which distracts from the story.

They’re coworkers, friends, and confidants, but Peter Marshal has always pined for a little something more with Noelle Walters. As a widow and a single mom, Noelle prefers to play it safe, and falling for Peter was never part of the plan. Then again, neither of their plans accounted for the well-meaning but meddling actions of Peter’s sister, who offers him up as their town’s most eligible bachelor in the local moms’ Facebook group. He’s none the wiser about the source of this sudden surge in attention, but he only has eyes for Noelle.

Poorly written, preachy book with awful narration
Revisado: 05-27-23
This is supposed to be a light-hearted romance, but instead the writer spends a majority of the book preaching her various options at us. Even when I agreed with a few of those opinions, it was still irritating. The narrator who read the Facebook group’s posts in overly exaggerated accents was offensive and tacky.

Farley Jones is being forced to date Meyer Harrigan, the man she has come to love, in order to make all of her stand-up dreams come true. It's agony-a tragedy, even. In lieu of flowers, please send cash . . . Meyer and his daughter Hazel have been everything to her since they came into her life three years ago. So, all joking aside, the stakes are especially high when it's not only her career, but both of those relationships on the line.

Preachy Christian fiction
Revisado: 05-07-23
The constant preaching should have been mentioned in the book description. Not everyone wants a dose of sermonizng with their reading for pleasure. Story was fine otherwise. The god talk didn’t further the storyline and only diminished from my enjoyment. Now I know to avoid this author.

Wow. So bad
Revisado: 04-18-23
I’ve read and listened to many Iris Johansen books so was expecting a certain level of quality. I’m not sure what happened here, but this was one of the worst books I’ve listened to. I kept hoping there would be some redeeming qualities, but couldn’t find any.
The dialogue, of which there was entirely too much, was stilted, completely unrealistic and wholly absurd. The characters weren’t properly fleshed out, and were caricatures. The storyline, which should have been interesting was rather limited for the length of this book.
The narrator didn’t enhance the experience. He spoke in a very robotic, staccato way,

Disappointing
Revisado: 01-21-23
Extremely disappointing after the first two books in this series which followed Jessica Yardley. Yardley was a clever, interesting character with a moral compass that pointed true north. In contrast, Dylan Alvarez is sleazy in the way he plays the legal system for the benefit of his clients. Not really someone who I want to spend all this time reading about.
A lot of reviewers complained about the narrator. He was so so, and yes, slow. I just increased the speed to 1.4 instead of my usual 1.2. That wasn’t the main downside of this audio book, though. It was the story and the characters. Characters not as well developed, and unlikeable. Arlo Ward’s character and strategies seem to be in conflict with each otherand be irreconcilable. Story not as complex as first two books, and focused on the trial instead of investigating.
Only bright side that I found this free through Kindle Unlimited. I would have been seriously bummed to waste a credit on it.

Delightful
Revisado: 09-15-22
Julia Whelan has always been one of my favorite narrators, but I was reluctant to buy a meta novel (audiobook reader writing about an audiobook reader). Ultimately, I’m glad I decided to take the risk. Whelan’s writing voice is as delightful as her reading voice. Her characters are well drawn, full of personality, and immensely likable. Add the bonus of a glimpse into the world of an audiobook reader, without it feeling cringy, preachy, or overly self-important, instead, it pokes light fun at the industry.
