Historia
Traditions that have lasted for centuries, both brutal and beautiful, create a rigid structure for life in the wild, astonishing place where Iran, Pakistan, and Afghanistan meet-the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). It is a formidable world, and the people who live there are constantly subjected to extremes-of place and of culture. The Wandering Falcon begins with a young couple, refugees from their tribe, who have traveled to the middle of nowhere to escape the cruel punishments meted out upon those who transgress the boundaries of marriage and family.

Great Insight into a Changing Time and Place
Revisado: 11-24-21
Loved this book. It offered a glimpse of the sociology and psychology of a people living at the Afghanistan-Pakistan border during a time of great change in that region. Unfortunately, the narrator's performance was horrid and was without any understanding of the material he was reading.

Excellent Content, Horrible Narration

The content is highly engaging but the narration is choppy and robotic. I urge Audible to release this book again with better narration.

Twice as long as it should be
Revisado: 03-18-19
The historical stories and their psychological interpretations work very well. But, then, there is a lengthy and repetitive self-help-type section in each chapter that leaves the listener exasperated and finally exhausted. This book could easily be half as long and thus become twice as good.

Historia
Most of us would agree that there’s a clear—and even obvious—connection between the things we believe and the way we behave. But what if our actions are driven not by our conscious values and beliefs but by hidden motivations we’re not even aware of? The “hidden brain” is Shankar Vedantam’s shorthand for a host of brain functions, emotional responses, and cognitive processes that happen outside our conscious awareness but have a decisive effect on how we behave.

Historia
Every day, we make decisions on topics ranging from personal investments to schools for our children to the meals we eat to the causes we champion. Unfortunately, we often choose poorly. The reason, the authors explain, is that, being human, we are all susceptible to various biases that can lead us to blunder. Our mistakes make us poorer and less healthy; we often make bad decisions involving education, personal finance, health care, mortgages and credit cards, the family, and even the planet itself.

Historia
In a country teetering on the brink of civil war, two young people meet - sensual, fiercely independent Nadia and gentle, restrained Saeed. They embark on a furtive love affair, and are soon cloistered in a premature intimacy by the unrest roiling their city. When it explodes, turning familiar streets into a patchwork of checkpoints and bomb blasts, they begin to hear whispers about doors - doors that can whisk people far away, if perilously and for a price. As the violence escalates, Nadia and Saeed decide that they no longer have a choice.

Refugees & Terrorirism meet Monsters Inc.
Revisado: 01-01-18
I picked this up because I am a fan of his first novel Moth Smoke, which had a lot of astute observations about class divisions in Pakistani society. This one was difficult to get through....depressing, with a plot device popularized by the movie, Monsters Inc. Also disappointed to realize that the author has never encountered the poor and destitute in the first world - they are merely caricatures in this book. Small things like: How do the homeless in the US have cell phone service without an address?, why do the refugees always end up in the most expensive cities in the world?, etc. Required more thought.

A somewhat familiar story
Revisado: 08-08-17
At least half of the book, which concerns a transgender person of a muslim background, seems to be inspired by a storyline from the 2011 Pakistani movie, Bol. The characters and the backstory of this part, however, are better fleshed out than the movie. The rest of the book concerning the day to day plight of the people of Kashmir, is refreshing and something that generally doesn't see the light of day in the international media, given the concerted policies of the Indian government and the nationalistic fervour it has drummed up in its population. It will be interesting to see the response to this book in the coming months from the Indian press, especially for Roy's portrayal of Modi as "Gujrat's Lalla".

A timely book with poor narration
Revisado: 07-15-17
Loved the balanced content. it is timely because the author looks beyond the events she has covered- she strives to understand the sociological and political reasons on an individual level. An important book for Muslim and other immigrant parents raising children in the West. There are many memorable lines such as:
"People who see themselves as victims often do not notice when they become oppressors"
"Children inherit their parents' hatred"
"Religion does not radicalize people, people radicalize religion"
The book is filled with Arabic terms and names that the narrator simply cannot pronounce - her pronunciation, while wrong, is not even consist from one sentence to the next. This makes the performance irritating at times.

With Give and Take, Adam Grant not only introduced a landmark new paradigm for success but also established himself as one of his generation’s most compelling and provocative thought leaders. In Originals he again addresses the challenge of improving the world, but now from the perspective of becoming original: choosing to champion novel ideas and values that go against the grain, battle conformity, and buck outdated traditions. How can we originate new ideas, policies, and practices without risking it all?
