American classic
Revisado: 04-14-25
With themes that resonate today as much as they did in 1850, this book deserves another read as an adult for all of us that had to “get through it” in high school. Short, but powerful.

Just bad
Revisado: 02-25-25
The narrator is terrible. Like I can get over most of them after a chapter or so, but I am going to have to return this one. The lilting voice that at the same time is completely monotone. Every sentence ends up with the SAME into action regardless. Like reading a phone book. It could be computer read it’s so bad. Then the content is sort of robotic as well. More like the worst kinds of history that make kids hate history class. Just a bunch of run on facts and figures. Everything seems to be of equal boring run on sentences. And the narrator… just can’t

This book is incredible
Revisado: 01-15-25
If you like history, this is amazing. Very approachable and interesting, while still being very fact intensive. Recommended by a friend and it is one of the best non fiction books that I have ever read.

Historia
Almost 50 years after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, his murder continues to haunt the American psyche and stands as a turning point in our nation’s history. The Warren Commission rushed out its report in 1964, but questions continue to linger: Was there a conspiracy? Was there a coup at the highest levels of government? On March 1, 1967, New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison shocked the world by arresting local businessman Clay Shaw for conspiracy to murder the president.

Well laid out arguments. The summation at the end clearly speaks to Garrison’s talent as a trial lawyer. Very sad indeed.

In the aftermath of World War II, Goh Junja is a girl just coming into her own. She is the latest successful deep-sea diver in her family. She urges her mother to allow her to make their annual trip to Mt. Halla, where they trade sea delicacies for pork. A sea-village girl, Junja has never been to the mountains, where it smells like mushrooms and earth, and it is there she falls in love with mountain-boy Yang Suwol. But when Junja returns one day later, it is just in time to see her mother take her last breath, beaten by the waves during a dive she was taking in Junja's place.

Ending was weird
Revisado: 05-30-24
I liked it, but not as much as I was expecting. It started off strong, but the weaving together at the end was forced. I didn’t follow all of the characters’ motivations. But enjoyable. Not as much at all about the haenyeo as I would have thought based on the title. I much preferred the Island of Sea Women by Lisa See. But this one was pretty good too.

Revisado: 05-30-24
This was my favorite Amy Tan. She seems to always make her protagonists selfish, but the other characters are delightful. This also had some good Chinese ghosts, which are always fun.

Fantastic story woven together in 20th century Ethiopia. I knew very little about the country and I found the history fascinating. The people and the culture mixed with the medicine made this a compelling story.

Historia
The 15th century saw the longest and bloodiest series of civil wars in British history. The crown of England changed hands five times as two branches of the Plantagenet dynasty fought to the death for the right to rule. Now, celebrated historian Dan Jones describes how the longest reigning British royal family tore itself apart until it was finally replaced by the Tudors. Some of the greatest heroes and villains in history were thrown together in these turbulent times.
