Historia
War can settle disputes, topple tyrants, and bend the trajectory of civilization—sometimes to the breaking point. From Troy to Hiroshima, moments when war has ended in utter annihilation have reverberated through the centuries, signaling the end of political systems, cultures, and epochs. Though much has changed over the millennia, human nature remains the same. In The End of Everything, military historian Victor Davis Hanson narrates a series of sieges and sackings that span the age of antiquity to the conquest of the New World to show how societies descend into barbarism and obliteration.

I follow VDH. This book was hard to follow. Too many details. Took a while to understand his format. He presents the overall, then goes back to the build-up. Finally, really digs into relationships and personalities. Being an audio book, unfamiliar places were hard to distinguish. Many names to remember and track. Overall, however, when I finished, I understood the overall premise. Meaningful for today.

The opening blew me away! His heartfelt overwhelming surprise at the reception his first book received. Some stories were not my cup of tea, but that is OK.
His reading of his own words was sometimes a little stiff. Still worth the listen.

Historia
In retreat from a devastating loss and crushing injustice, Katie lives alone in a fortresslike stone house on Jacob’s Ladder island. Once a rising star in the art world, she finds refuge in her painting. The neighboring island of Ringrock houses a secret: a government research facility. And now two agents have arrived on Jacob’s Ladder in search of someone—or something—they refuse to identify. Although an air of menace hangs over these men, an infinitely greater threat has arrived, one so strange even the island animals are in a state of high alarm.

Revisado: 01-01-24
Dean Koontz always takes you to very low places. I know there will always be a redemption. This book was quite difficult at times. But well worth the adventure. The reading was done well, but at times it was a little hard to understand.

Historia
In You Can’t Joke About That, Kat Timpf shows why much of the way we talk about sensitive subjects is wrong. We’ve created all the wrong rules. We push ourselves into unnecessary conflicts when we should feel like we’re all in this together. When someone says “you can’t joke about that,” what they really mean is “this is a subject that makes people sad or angry.”

Historia
Human history is full of the stories of peasants, subjects, and tribes. Yet the concept of the “citizen” is historically rare — and was among America’s most valued ideals for over two centuries. But without shock treatment, warns historian Victor Davis Hanson, American citizenship as we have known it may soon vanish.

This is what we all need to hear. I found, the epilogue was the most poignant. Probably because I listen to it when so much of what Victor Davis Hanson has pointed out and summarized is coming to light. We are blessed with Victor Davis Hanson

Historia
In 1991, the smoldering ruins of Saddam Hussein’s regime testified to America’s unchallenged might. Having defeated one of the world’s largest armies in a matter of days, the United States looked forward to a new century of peace and prosperity. Thirty years later, a ragtag Taliban chased us out of Afghanistan in a humiliating rout. At home, our cities are cesspools of homelessness and crime. The former land of opportunity seems to be in irreversible decline.

Reality and Fantasy
Revisado: 09-09-22
I always enjoy Kurt Schlichter’s sarcasm. I had been hoping this would give me more optimism about where we’re going. It didn’t, that’s reality. The way he jumped from explaining what’s happening to fantasy narrative was sometimes confusing.

Historia
The American Revolution is often portrayed as a high-minded, orderly event whose capstone, the Constitution, provided the ideal framework for a democratic, prosperous nation. Alan Taylor, two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize, gives us a different creation story in this magisterial history of the nation's founding. Rising out of the continental rivalries of European empires and their native allies, Taylor's Revolution builds like a ground fire overspreading Britain's mainland colonies, fueled by local conditions, destructive, hard to quell.
