Historia
From comedian Sally Chaffin Brooks comes a memoir about the thing she can't seem to shut up about— her life changing thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail. 25-year-old Sally has no reason to upend her comfortable, conventional life to spend 5 months hiking the Appalachian Trail; no reason except that her charismatic best friend, Erin, asked her to come along. A woefully out-of-shape Sally quickly realizes she may not actually be prepared for the realities of thru-hiking— brutal weather, wrong turns, and painful blisters have her wanting to quit almost as soon as she starts.

A pretty good listen
Revisado: 04-02-25
I like the story. It was written by a younger woman, and it tells her trail story along with a friend she meets and along with the relationship that she had before, and after the trip. The only thing I can say is that there’s a lot of swearing in the book. I’m not approved or anything. I think an appropriately placed F bomb is great, but when you sprinkle them to liberally throughout a book it cheapens it.

I feel like it must’ve taken so much effort and been a very difficult book to write for the author. Coming to terms with your own digressions publicly is never easy. The author did it in a very convincing and humble way, and also weave an excellent crime story together. Super interesting book just the right length. Really enjoyed it.

Historia
Looking at the island of Palm Beach today, with its unmatched mansions, tony shops, and pristine beaches, one is hard pressed to visualize the dense tangle of Palmetto brush and mangroves that it was when visionary entrepreneur and railroad tycoon Henry Flagler first arrived there in April 1893. With the authority and narrative prose style that has gained Standiford's work widespread acclaim, Palm Beach, Mar-a-Lago, and the Rise of America's Xanadu tells the history of this fabled landscape intertwined with the colorful lives of its famous protagonists.

If you stumbled on this book by accident, read all the other authors books. So well written and just generally excellent in terms of history. This particular book is good because it shows the history of the development of Florida as well as the mansions. Really enjoyable book. Once you’re done with this book, Reed, his other book last train to paradise.

Millions have sat under the “big top,” watching as trapeze artists glide and clowns entertain, but few know the captivating stories behind the men whose creativity, ingenuity, and determination created one of our country’s most beloved pastimes. In Battle for the Big Top, New York Times best-selling author Les Standiford brings to life a remarkable era when three circus kings - James Bailey, P. T. Barnum, and John Ringling - all vied for control of the vastly profitable and influential American Circus.

I started reading this author a couple years ago and can’t put down any book that he does. The book about Key West Railroad was awesome and every ensuing book is great. So well written and well researched. Doesn’t get into too much minutia. Excellent history and just great writing. Read this book and then want to read all his other

After graduating from college, Jennifer isn't sure what she wants to do with her life. She is drawn to the Appalachian Trail, a 2,175-mile footpath that stretches from Georgia to Maine. Though her friends and family think she's crazy, she sets out alone to hike the trail, hoping it will give her time to think about what she wants to do next. The next four months are the most physically and emotionally challenging of her life.

A really nice listen about a young woman who does the Appalachian Trail. I love the narration. It was terrific. It got a little religious and spiritual at some point, but I guess that’s her prerogative and when you write a book you get to do that. All above everything else it was just a.

Why is Miami… Miami? What does the heartbreaking fate of the cheetah tell us about the way we raise our children? Why do Ivy League schools care so much about sports? What is the Magic Third, and what does it mean for racial harmony? In this provocative new work, Malcolm Gladwell returns to the subject of social epidemics and tipping points, this time with the aim of explaining the dark side of contagious phenomena. Through a series of gripping stories, Gladwell traces the rise of a new and troubling form of social engineering

As always, Malcolm Gladwell put together a well thought out and researched intriguing story. I think there’s a little bit of a bias sometimes but that’s part of him and I really enjoy this whole book. His books are terrific.

Glamour, danger, liberation: in a Mad Men–era of commercial flight, Pan Am World Airways attracted the kind of young woman who wanted out, and wanted up. Required to have a college education, speak two languages, and possess the political savvy of a Foreign Service officer, a jet-age stewardess serving on iconic Pan Am between 1966 and 1975 also had to be between 5′3" and 5′9", between 105 and 140 pounds, and under 26 years of age at the time of hire.

A little bit dry.
Revisado: 11-02-24
A lot less history of the PNM corporation and more experiences of the flight attendants who flew for the airline. It’s a nice insightful view. It’s really pretty dry listening to. A little bit disjointed, but in the end it all kind of comes together. It’s OK.

Historia
An exuberant and insightful work of popular history of how streets got their names, houses their numbers, and what it reveals about class, race, power, and identity. When most people think about street addresses, if they think of them at all, it is in their capacity to ensure that the postman can deliver mail or a traveler won’t get lost. But street addresses were not invented to help you find your way; they were created to find you. In many parts of the world, your address can reveal your race and class.

Author has a clear agenda
Revisado: 09-25-24
I think I wanted to listen to this book because it sounded interesting about addresses. Unfortunately, halfway through the book you realize that the authors, bias and agenda for Black Lives Matter throughout the remainder of the book. It’s a skewed book that has some interesting parts to it, but is clearly biased by the authors racial in equality agenda. If it’s something you’re interested in by all means listen to it. For me, I just wanna listen to something about history and not be forced to listen to some other person.

This is a nice review of a guy working in a really really cheap CD hotel for a year. Is everything you expect. There’s no stunning revelations other than the fact that these hotels rely on low labor and cheap sleazy guest who have low expectations. Who is a really good book overall.

The saga behind The Blues Brothers, as Daniel de Visé reveals, is epic, encompassing the colorful childhoods of Belushi and Aykroyd; the comedic revolution sparked by Harvard’s Lampoon and Chicago’s Second City; the birth and anecdote-rich, drug-filled early years of Saturday Night Live, where the Blues Brothers were born as an act amidst turmoil and rivalry; and, of course, the indelible behind-the-scenes narrative of how the film was made, scene by memorable scene.

It’s less about The Blues Brothers and more about the actors involved. Really good book and the last part all about the movie is interesting. It’s more of an autobiography of John Belushi.
