Just an ok story. Confusing and not well edited. Half the male voices sounded prissy and officious, which doesn’t match the tough guy gangsters they were supposed to be.

Super good. One slight error though: since when is it ever hot and humid in Mexico City?

Ellis is a master of thorough research and masterful storytelling. He bring to life the early days of our Republic and the men and women who founded it. Narrator was very good but sometimes his intonation of particular characters was a bit tinny or at times over dramatic. But no matter. This is a terrific book!

Geraldine Hughes captured each voice PERFECTLY. McCann tells a story of four generations of women whose lives are woven into the fabric of Irish history. It is never preachy or predictable. He tells a story like a poet or even a painter using words like brush strokes. Maybe an even better analogy is song because in the voice of Ms. Hughes the book has a lyrical quality to it. Meanwhile, far more than a simple family history, Transatlantic is almost an elegy, a meditation, a memoir or reflection on grief, loss, war, freedom, pilgrimage. There aren't words to describe the beauty of this book because McCann himself would have to write them.

Every five years or so I read or listen to a book that finds a permanent place in my heart and mind. This is such a book. Heartbreakingly sad, beautiful beyond words. I would have to have the writing skill of Shakespeare to capture in words the beauty of this story. And of course, as with all audiobooks, it's only as good as its author, and Appelman captures the text perfectly. His American accent for me made accessible and all the more human the thoughts, feelings, and actions of the characters, especially Werner and his German comrades. No pretense, no melodrama, just a purity and simplicity that told the story as I imagine Doerr would want it told, much like Harper Lee reading her own To Kill A Mockingbird. This book is unforgettable and a great gift to readers and listeners everywhere. Thank you Mr. Doerr. Thank you Mr. Appelman.
