Historia
Because about four weeks ago, the world simply turned. One day we had iPhones and GoPros, Mickey Mouse and hamburgers. The next day we had magic and monsters. And us humans? We became players with levels, items, and classes. Pretty ironic considering how many times my parents told me to “quit gaming and experience real life” while I was growing up. And then real life grabbed us by the balls, and it was the gamers who were prepared.

Bait & Switch
Revisado: 07-06-24
The book started off pretty good. But then it got cartoonish. Some people may like it. I couldn't finish it. It gets weirdly YA just after the opening chapters.

Mixed Feelings
Revisado: 06-26-24
I have mixed feelings about this one. Unless you're really into introspective systems review with some skill grinding the first 2/3 of the book will be a bit rough to get through.
The story doesn't really kick off until the last third. Which is pretty decent. But, for me, the payoff for getting through the first two thirds just wasn't enough to give more than three stars.
I understand this is the first book in a new series, and focused on explaining the the magic system. But, it would have been nice to have more character and world building as well.
The vibe of Aleron's writing has changed. With "The Land" there was a more bright, positive, fun, humorous vibe. His last two books have had a more grim dark, vibe - not my thing.
With The Land, I was excited to see what would happen next. With this one there's potential but will it go even further down the grim dark path like God's Eye, or will it be more adventurous and intriguing.
Will I read the next one? Maybe. I guess. But, I don't think I'll prioritize it.

Historia
The world is broken. The powerful machines that once ruled over land and sky fought and died, leaving humanity in a primitive age of swords and monsters. But that was long ago, and only legends of the Schism remain. Enoch has never been frightened by these tales. He sees things differently from the other youth in Rewn's Fork, and that makes him an outcast. Where others see crops and weather and flocks of sheep, Enoch sees numbers and patterns.

Decent story. Well written. It seemed a bit rushed. There was a lot of possibility left on the table, Definitely could have been more.

Historia
Reidon Ward's first semester at the Galens Institute hasn't been without reward. In just over half a year he's gone from the weakest cadet at school to one of the strongest in his class, and there's no one left who would argue that his Device, Shido, isn't the most terrifying CAD they've ever laid eyes on. Still, Rei knows that his climb has barely begun, like he knows that the true fight is only just starting. After all… The Sectionals tournament has arrived. Rei, along with Aria, Viv, Catcher, and a couple unexpected squadmates, are about to face the first real battle of their careers.

Formulaic with little Story Growth
Revisado: 12-19-23
I really had high hopes for this series. But, listening to was 32 hours of tournament fighting is not my idea of a story with value. In the beginning the story growth is teased but nothing actually comes of it.
Really disappointing.

Historia
Deklin will become a villain to rival the gods… somebody should probably tell him. For now, Deklin's just a fourth-year magi looking for a post-midterm vacation from Earth. When a failed portal spell strands Deklin on a dangerous, massive worldshard, he unwillingly embarks on an adventure where spire climbers compete for ever higher standings, and cultivators bind magical aspects to strengthen their spirits. Transformed into a dragonblood and branded as an outlaw, Deklin is forbidden from advancing past the first threshold alongside his growing band of exiles.

OK story but a grind
Revisado: 12-19-23
OK story but a grind to get through.
The first two chapters were pretty good. But, it's a bit of a bait and switch. What you start out with and what you expect is an adventuring magi, experiencing and growing in different cultivation systems and on different worlds. Then the story morphs into a real grind of a tower climb story that lasts for a third or more of the book. During the tower climb and just after there's no real story plot revealed with little character development., little lore development. I wondered the entire time, when is the actual story going to start. Then the story morphs from there to be a save the world scenario.
All the while the growth of the MC is nerfed multiple times and is essentially knocked down one way or another by the author. And then, out of the blue, right at the end he's some powerful savior. His character development and the story line up to that point don't really support the change.
Beguiles credulity. If not for Nick Podehl narrating it I would not have finished.

Historia
Twenty years ago, the Merge brought armies of monsters flooding into the West Coast. Dungeons popped up in shopping malls, airports, and Starbucks. Walls were built to contain the spread, but the promise of priceless loot dropped by the creatures inspired a new type of gold rush. Clay Jaeger has nothing left outside the walls. Civilization took everything he worked for, chewed it up, and spat it out. Now Clay, his wife Alex, and his beer-loving, chainsaw-toting brother, Joe, are going west to try their hand at monster killing.

Historia
For Ronan, life in the Bunker was seldom exciting. He had spent all of his time trapped below the surface of the Earth, exploring the same floors over and again. Returning to the surface had always been a taboo subject, something that had always clearly not been an option yet was a necessity. When nature itself fights back against exploration, you stay where it’s safe.

Could not finish
Revisado: 10-05-23
I couldn't finish this. It's just a weak story with weak narration.
It feels like the book is a first draft that is in desperate need of an editor to help flesh it out.
The narrator seems to overstress a lot of words and end of sentences. I've listened to other samples of the narrator and he does not do this.
The combination just makes for a weak end product. DNF

Intriguing stories read by compelling narrators
Revisado: 10-05-23
I find myself gravitating towards specific authors and even specific narrators. So, I buying anthologies to experience different narrators and authors.
Anthologies are always hard because there will be stories I don't like and narrators whose voice just don't sound right to me.
This is the first anthology that I've listened to that I've liked most of the authors and narrators.

Excellent Listen
Revisado: 10-05-23
Although the MC is OP and growth is lightening fast, I enjoyed the story. The LitRPG mechanics make sense.
The story line is a nice balance of mystery, adventure and fighting. The MC is likeable and worth cheering for.
Andrea Parsneau does a great job narrating.
