What a well researched, thoughtful book. The plight of women is well covered throughout. I found myself constantly feeling sad for them all. The narration is also excellent. Overall, highly recommend.

Former spy Maggie Bird came to the seaside village of Purity, Maine, eager to put the past behind her after a mission went tragically wrong. These days, she’s living quietly on her chicken farm, still wary of blowback from the events that forced her early retirement. But when a body turns up in Maggie’s driveway, she knows it’s a message from former foes who haven’t forgotten her. Maggie turns to her local circle of old friends—all retirees from the CIA—to help uncover the truth about who is trying to kill her, and why.

Start of a good series

The story was well composed. I did feel some characters were predictable. However I enjoyed the older and younger versions of the characters and life in rural Maine so much that I’d follow the series.

A new series?
Revisado: 09-26-23
I love the Heathcliff Lenox stories and was hoping there would be another installment. I decided to give this book a try.
I thought there were a huge amount of characters to keep track of, not only the detective, but also a reporter, a police chief, pets, helpers, other police officers, and the many characters that make up the mystery. All of these characters live in the small town of Little Minton, so I suppose the authors felt it necessary to introduce the town to us. In the end it came together with a pleasant ending. Themes of elderly needs, community, love and loneliness were very clear.

Ben Macintyre’s Agent Zigzag was hailed as “rollicking, spellbinding” (New York Times), “wildly improbable but entirely true” (Entertainment Weekly), and, quite simply, “the best book ever written” (Boston Globe). In his new book, Operation Mincemeat, he tells an extraordinary story that will delight his legions of fans. In 1943, from a windowless basement office in London, two brilliant intelligence officers conceived a plan that was both simple and complicated - Operation Mincemeat.

Pretty incredible
Revisado: 09-22-23
I watched the Netflix movie of the same name, which got me interested in finding out whether or not there was a book describing the events of this operation. I was pleased to find this book, and even more pleased to find it narrated by John Lee. If you are interested in WW2 spies and behind the mainstream scenes, do listen to this one. It is just incredible. Well researched, amazing.

Historia
The Martin Beck books are widely acknowledged as some of the most influential detective novels ever written. Written by Swedish husband and wife team Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö between 1965 and 1975, the 10-book series set a gold standard for all subsequent Scandinavian crime fiction. Long before Kurt Wallander or Harry Hole, Beck was the original flawed policeman, working with a motley collection of colleagues to uncover the cruelty and injustice lurking beneath the surface of Sweden's liberal society.

Really good radio plays
Revisado: 09-22-23
I enjoyed listening to these radio plays throughout my day. Each is a good, complete detective/police mystery with a Swedish twist. I enjoyed all of the Swedish names, too. I read that these were books written in the 60's, before police dramas were really a thing. Amazing, if true. All of the things we enjoy are there, the fantastic characters, the grusome crime, some light travel, relationships...I won't say more. Very well acted, some humor, excellent drama.

Interesting format, too much yelling
Revisado: 09-21-23
I've read Natalie Hayne's other books and enjoyed them quite a bit. All are interesting to read from a less "male gaze" perspective, empathetic, full of adventure and nuance. What I didn't enjoy about this one, however, is that many, if not all, of the characters seem to have the same emotional tone, which is sarcastic and snide, frequently angry. I don't mind heavy emotions or drama; the myths are full of them. in this interpretation, I grew tired of the various characters' angry outbursts nearly every chapter. it made listening a little strained and distracted from the story, I think.

Historia
The tellers of Greek myths—historically men—have routinely sidelined the female characters. When they do take a larger role, women are often portrayed as monstrous, vengeful or just plain evil—like Pandora, the woman of eternal scorn and damnation whose curiosity is tasked with causing all the world’s suffering and wickedness when she opened that forbidden box. But, as Natalie Haynes reveals, in ancient Greek myths there was no box. It was a jar . . . which is far more likely to tip over.

Historia
Who was Kim Philby? Those closest to him—like his fellow MI6 officer and best friend since childhood, Nicholas Elliot, and the CIA’s head of counterintelligence, James Jesus Angleton—knew him as a loyal confidant and an unshakeable patriot. Philby was a brilliant and charming man who rose to head Britain’s counterintelligence against the Soviet Union. Together with Elliott and Angleton he stood on the front lines of the Cold War, holding Communism at bay. But he was secretly betraying them both: He was working for the Russians the entire time.

Both fascinating, strange and sometimes horrifying. I am amazed writing a book like this was even possible.
Narrator John Lee is one of the best. I always enjoy his readings.
