What an idiot Zara is!

These books seem to glorify stupidity, impulsiveness and irresponsibility. I’ve listened to the first three, but I can’t get through anymore! Zara is supposed to be in her early 30s, but she acts more like she’s 14. The first book is quite pleasant but as we go along Zara gets worse and becomes downright boring with all of this snarkiness that is not clever and not smart.

The only thing different about this book from the first one is the epilogue. Otherwise it is simply a repeat of everything in the first book.

The reviews are very misleading. There is a little humor and no wit, whatsoever. I can’t get past chapter 6. I’ve tried repeatedly, now, but it’s just not worth the time, energy, and effort to listen!

I normally like Dakota Cassidy but this is simply appalling. I think her characters are supposed to be snarky, but there is no wit, cleverness, or intelligence behind the verbal outhouse effluvia that makes up at least the first 3 chapters. That’s all I could stomach waiting for something to change. For shame, Ms. Cassidy! For such an excellent author to dump such offal on your normally avid readers is beyond belief.

I can’t decide which is more boring: the character or the narrator.

After reading the Wisteria Witches series, I was expecting this to be equally charming and a good cozy mystery series. Unfortunately I couldn’t even force my way through the first book. As I said in the headline, I’m not sure which is worse, the narrator or the main character. There’s little or nothing cozy about at least this first book. The narrator is monotone with no differentiation among characters. The main character doesn’t seem too bright, clever, or worth worrying whether she gets hurt or not. I rarely return books, but this is one I will.

The biggest problem with this book is that the story is weak and almost like an initial draft rather than a fully fleshed out story. There seems to be a whole lot missing with a classic deus ex machina solution, which is a very lazy Way of plotting. Characters are poorly sketched. And things happen way too fast without any rationale as to why they are happening. It seems that this entire book was rushed in the publication before it was finished. Although I love the Happily Everlasting series, this is a very weak kick off to a new spinoff.

I finally gave up listening to this because how could anyone like Hadley at all? I’ll she does is whine and be contrary. It might have been less bad if the strident narrator hadn’t use the voice that she used for her. Her other voices we’re almost incomprehensible with the exception of Booker. I rarely return a book, but I think I will return this one since I cannot get through it.

Terrible narration and music

I could Not even get through this book because of the music, which was so irritating that it gave me a headache. I don’t think I even made it through the first chapter. Whoever the aspiring screen composer was should stick to his/her day job.

Worse the narrator spoke in a monotone, sounding like she was in a deep depression. Just in case it was a poor interpretation of the character, I tried the first few minutes of the second book in the series. Nope! Even though there was slightly more delineation among characters, the narrator simply sounds bored. Since I had bought all three books in the series, all three will be going back.

Usually ( I.e., for the other books in the series) Ms Knowleton does a great narration, with well drawn characterizations and different voices and cadences for each one. This one sounds like she read it in her sleep - slow and somewhat monotone with almost no difference among the characters. One could not tell who was talking, which made the story get list. I actually fell asleep within minutes after starting.

Dreadful narrator, mediocrely writing

The story, at least the concept, seems potentially quite good. However, The narrator is so awful that the caliber of the writing is shown for what it is: desperately in need of a good copy editor! Using the word “fear” three times in one sentence is not only weak exposition but simply lazy. If a writer, sadly, has a limited vocabulary, a thesaurus should be kept near at hand. Even the narrow scope of an online version can prevent such silly redundancies.

The handling of dreams and flashbacks is muddled in the text but is made much worse by the narration. Sentences are broken such as to lose meaning and all emotional impact. The exact same vocal inflection is used consistently throughout. There is no character differentiation.

I’ve given the story four stars. However, that is only a guess and I’m giving credit for what the plot line appears to be. The reason for this is that, after only 2 1/2 hours of listening, I am so bored and frustrated with the abominable narration and the lack of skill in the text, that I can go no further. Maybe at sometime in the future I will try to struggle through another two hours or so in order to find out what happens. As I said, the ideas are good; it is the execrable execution by both author and narrator that are at fault.
