The Galahad, a faster-than-light spacecraft, carries 50 scientists and engineers on a mission to prepare Kepler 452b, Earth's nearest habitable neighbor at 1400 light years away. With Earth no longer habitable and the Mars colony slowly failing, they are humanity's best hope. After 10 years in a failed cryogenic bed - body asleep, mind awake - William Chanokh's torture comes to an end as the fog clears, the hatch opens, and his friend and fellow hacker, Tom, greets him...by stabbing a screwdriver into his heart. Infinite horror, depression and self pity.
Revisado: 08-27-23
Infinite horror, betrayal, depression, and self-pity followed by Matrix-like revelation. After all that, it is followed by more sadness and revisiting the planets that they came from. The only guy gets the only girl and a mundane relationship starts. After visiting Earth and Mars and finding nothing but sadness and closure they come to the planet that was supposed to be the human seed colony. More sadness, more horror, uninteresting plot about the descendants of the seed colony. I don't know what happens after that because I'm not going any farther. I can't bring myself to accomplish the task. If you like infinite sorrow, this is for sure for you. I am going to return this book and leave my ennui behind. Perhaps the next book will provide something worth spending my time on.
Narration: R.C. Bray
Mr. Bray does a fantastic job with the narration and is the sole reason I made it as far as I did in the book.

The narration was the best part.
Revisado: 12-16-22
The protagonist has more whine than California vineyards. The was potential here that was squandered. I haven't finished the book and I don't think I'm going to. I'm terribly disappointed with how the protagonist is cunning and horribly stupid all at the same time. The amount of teenage angst would normally be ok me if the plot ever succeeded at being bearable. I am nearer to the end of the book but just get annoyed at the thought of continuing. The magic system is good and some of the interactions between characters are good. Other than that I feel like if this book was printed we probably would have been better off with the trees it was made from.

When Van Tudor returns to his childhood home, he inherits more than the family farm. His grandfather used to tell him fantastic stories of spacemen and monsters, princesses and galactic knights. Little did Van realize, the old man's tales were more than fiction; they were real. Hidden beneath the old barn, Van’s legacy is waiting: a starship, not of this world. With his combat AI, an android bird named Perry, Van takes his first steps into the wider galaxy. He soon finds that space is far busier and more dangerous than he could have ever conceived.

I always have my eye out for good fantasy. This is exactly that, a superb sci fi story. I feel like some stories are predictable, however, this book effortlessly kept my interest. The narrator, as always, does an outstanding job. If you haven't picked this book up yet, I would definitely suggest the listen!

This was a good read with an excellent plot. The main character wins through skill and cunning. The narration was solid and it was possible to distinguish which characters were speaking through the voices the narrator used. I would definitely recommend this book to friends.

Decent
Revisado: 05-05-21
There were several things to the story that I liked and a few minor things that I did not. Let me start by reviewing the narration. The narrator could, I think, have been better. He didn't do a bad job but, I wasn't impressed as I have been with other narrators. Perhaps I have been spoiled by John Keating and Nick Podehl but, Peter Kenny was just that, a reader. Other narrators complement or even bring a story to life. I just didn't feel this was the case here. I will say again though, Peter Kenny didn't do a bad job.
Now I will touch on the things that I liked and disliked about the book in a list form.
LIKES
1. I love dragons and feel as though every book with a dragon in its contents should do them their proper justices. I feel that this book nailed a proud perspective of dragons. I did not feel like the dragons in this book were a plot device, as I have seen in other books, to lure in readers or add flavor. These dragons acted as, I think, a dragon should and were a big part of the main plot.
2.The magic system is well thought through and explained. This really strengthens the story and enriches it.
3.The plot was very interesting. I find myself wanting the next book. I would go into more detail but, I don't want to spoil things for those about to read this book.
4. I really liked some of the inward struggles the characters dealt with. Moral struggles really added to this book, in my opinion.
DISLIKES
1. I like some of the inward struggles of the characters. However, some I felt were overdone. The burden of responsibility is good and enriches a story. However, if a character constantly second guesses themselves or their decisions too much it becomes annoying. The same holds true for the phrase "what if?". Some "what if" questions can be a good thing. Some in this story were just plain annoying.
2. Teens. I feel like, for the most part, the teens in this tale acted as though real teens would. However, sometimes I caught myself yelling at my audiobook calling the main character an idiot. If you are a person that likes books where the main character wins by cunning, cleverness, and good decision making, this book is NOT for you. The main character progresses by a series of bad choices, dumb luck, and plot. I feel as though any competent villain could have sneezed and purely by accident have won. However, the plot always wins.
3. The magical system was great but, the magical abilities themselves were underwhelming. Honestly, I feel that "Consecration" was a direct rip-off of the same ability in World of Warcraft and other video games I have played. This was unoriginal and downright infuriating.
4. Let's talk about bugs. The story of how the bugs came to be was a very good part of the story. However, I think the author could have spent more time describing them. Some of the bugs are described in a fight on the way to the main objective. However, in the big battle, some of the bugs are given names only and no other description. I found myself wanting to skip the battle entirely due to this annoyance but, plodded through anyway. The villain or threat is just as important to a story as the hero. I felt underwhelmed yet again.
Overall, I feel, this book is decent. It could have been excellent with a few minor easy changes.

What did you love best about Reign of Madness?
The fact that Rez could keep himself secret while filling so many role and keep secret the fact that he is masterful. Also, the way the book ends makes my heart scream for the third book. I have lost sleep over the yearning for the next book.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Rezkin. For the same reasons given in my review of the first book.
What about Nick Podehl’s performance did you like?
Nick Podehl is, as always, masterful in his narrations.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Most definitely! I couldn't stop listening!

Where does Free the Darkness rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Where does Free the Darkness rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far? ....Answering this question is difficult. It's like asking which did you like better the Ferrari or the lotus. Most of the audiobooks I listen to are just as epic as the others.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Rezkin obviously. The main character is a bit stupid when it comes to social settings but when i put myself in his perspective I can see why. He has grown up isolated and when he does obtain freedom he maintains self discipline. That makes him powerful.
What about Nick Podehl’s performance did you like?
Nick Podehl is now one of my favorite narrators. He like a few other of my favorites, has the ability to make different voices for different characters. It makes for a very smooth listen. I actually found this book because I had listened to The Name of the Wind and A Wise Man's Fear. I looked up which books this narrator had read.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Unsure... I can't think of anything suitable enough to do it justice.
Any additional comments?
This book made me immediately buy the second.
