Historia
It's been centuries since the robots of Panga gained self-awareness and laid down their tools; centuries since they wandered, en masse, into the wilderness, never to be seen again; centuries since they faded into myth and urban legend. One day, the life of a tea monk is upended by the arrival of a robot, there to honor the old promise of checking in. The robot cannot go back until the question of "what do people need?" is answered. But the answer to that question depends on who you ask, and how.

A sweet slice of Hope Punk
Revisado: 02-17-24
Joyfully narrated this little ditty entrances and provides us with a glimpse of what could be, if only we chose it. Written for "Anyone who could use a break." It does not falter to attain that intention. Plus, its funny, witty, endearing and above all charming.

Expansive and reverent
Revisado: 03-26-23
It’s not so much that it’s an expansive telling of Henry Darger as it is a thought expanding exploration of how art informs art. The creators clearly put a lot of heart into what is effectively a mini series on Henry and his influence.

Historia
The year is 1348. Thomas, a disgraced knight, has found a young girl alone in a dead Norman village. An orphan of the Black Death, and an almost unnerving picture of innocence, she tells Thomas that plague is only part of a larger cataclysm - that the fallen angels under Lucifer are rising in a second war on heaven, and that the world of men has fallen behind the lines of conflict. Is it delirium or is it faith? She believes she has seen the angels of God. She believes the righteous dead speak to her in dreams. And now she has convinced the faithless Thomas to shepherd her across a depraved landscape to Avignon.

Roadtrip through the Middle Ages
Revisado: 12-20-22
The narration makes the incredible descriptions and rich characters pop. I'm not much of a Knight on quest reader/listener and you don't have to be one to enjoy methinks. Plus there's a quick trip through the levels of Hell that will haunt. Not for the squeamish that's for sure. Lit horror at its best!

As they recount the events surrounding the disappearance of their toddler—one with a tendency to bite—two parents cope with grief in vastly different ways. While the father wrestles with feelings of guilt, the mother is convinced she’s spotted the boy in frightening TV news reports...though let’s just say he looks nothing like the precocious little boy they remember from a decade ago.

What if your child was a monster?
Revisado: 12-15-22
That's what Fritz is getting at. So apt for our time of monsters. The writing is off the chain winding us through two perspectives, mom and dad. Different choices. The cast is - well, i don't have another word for it - amazeballs! Heartfelt, powerful, the story leaps off the page through their invested, and craft-filled performances. And the production quality is super eerie! I kept turning around as I wandered about listening to it expecting to see the scene unfolding right before me. Why are you reading this and not listening to this masters class in short, topical horror right now?

My name's Griz. I've never been to school, I've never had friends, and in my whole life I've not met enough people to play a game of football. My parents told me how crowded the world used to be, before all the people went away. But we were never lonely on our remote island. We had each other and our dogs. Then the thief came.

I wish I could unread it ...
Revisado: 06-03-22
... so I could read it again. The story is simple and rich. The twists and turns poignant. Reveals blinding. I'm not a big fan of most authors reading their own books but Fletcher is pitch perfect. And it's spot on for the first person narrative. He owns the story as no one could. The craft is off the chain. Mystery. Stakes (all of them). A singular ride to boot. Fingers crossed for another trip.

It’s a quiet life, until a local eccentric known as Spooky Ed shows up on their doorstep. Ed entrusts Jeffy with hiding a strange and dangerous object - something he calls “the key to everything” - and tells Jeffy that he must never use the device. But after a visit from a group of ominous men, Jeffy and Amity find themselves accidentally activating the key and discovering an extraordinary truth.

Suspenseful, Heart-full + Interdimensional
Revisado: 03-06-21
This is my intro to Koontz and I will def be listening to more of his work. It is an easy listen, subtly read by both Ballerini and Parks (for the main story). Elsewhere manages to put heart into an exploration of what healing or horror may be experienced through interdimensional jumps. Like all worthy sci-fi - it speaks to our time and, at least my experience of 2016 - 2020, of entering into an alternate reality akin to the Twilight Zone. Koontz ratchets up suspense with ease and gathering intensity. The true success of the story is its heart - which entails healing the wound of un-wanted-ness and loss. It's quick paced, fun, and engaging through out. Bonus stories at the end, equally well read, add flavor and depth to the main story and openings for more to come - which I hope will be the case. Also - perfect for a streaming limited or on-going series. Fingers crossed for that!

Historia
More than 15 years after the events of The Handmaid's Tale, the theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within. At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results. Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The testimonies of these two young women are joined by a third: Aunt Lydia. Her complex past and uncertain future unfold in surprising and pivotal ways.

Revisado: 09-25-19
what would it be like to grow up in a country where lies abound and everyone knows that everything is a lie and everyone buys the lie because it is in their own short-term benefit, or is forced to because they have no voice? what would it be like to grow up as a refugee in a country that welcomes and supports you and even hides you to save and protect you? what would it be like to be so utterly oppressed that you would join your own oppressor and oppress your own community? what it be like to be blinded from the workings of your body and taught that you weren't important but your body was? wonder what that would be like?

Revisado: 07-08-19
I've been trying to find some good ol' post-apocalypse from a different lens and ToL delivers on both fronts. I enjoyed experiencing the post-apocalypse through Maggie's identity. The story is solid, a great lead character with sufficient depth and backstory. Narration was awesome all around. Looking forward to giving the 2nd book a listen. Enjoy!

Conscious Concepts Highlights
Revisado: 07-08-19
This was my first excursion into concepts of consciousness. Like a stone skipping over a pond, the author touches on various concepts that I found intriguing and helpful. Her kind and gentle narration help the more dense concepts go down more smoothly. Four stars because I was left a bit wanting about the implication(s) of her conclusion. Definitely worth a listen.
