In her memoir, a work of deep reflection and mesmerizing storytelling, Michelle Obama invites listeners into her world, chronicling the experiences that have shaped her - from her childhood on the South Side of Chicago to her years as an executive balancing the demands of motherhood and work to her time spent at the world's most famous address. With unerring honesty and lively wit, she describes her triumphs and her disappointments, both public and private, telling her full story as she has lived it - in her own words and on her own terms.

It's nice and straightforward.
Revisado: 02-24-19
Becoming by Michelle Obama is a nice, straightforward reveal of her life with particular (and expected) emphasis on the years surrounding her position as First Lady of the United States of America. I enjoyed listening to her story on audiobook. This take on her life did not expound on much that you could not find on Wikipedia or other biographical texts. There are no surprises. There are no deep cuts. It is a nice, straightforward biography.

Historia
The Imitation of Christ is one of the great spiritual classics of Christianity. Dr. Creasy's new reading of Thomas A Kempis' 1441 Latin Autograph Manuscript has become "the standard translation of this spiritual classic." The printed trade edition has been a best seller and was chosen as a Book of the Month Club selection. It remains an essential spiritual work for contemporary readers. This audio version read by Don Ranson captures the intimacy and depth of this superb translation.

So Inspiring and Meditative
Revisado: 02-02-19
I love this book, The Imitation of Christ. Every short chapter is so profound and inspiring. The book is a natural companion to prayer as a lot of the text is in response to Jesus Himself. I found myself pondering deep subjects of life and Christianity. I highly recommend this for those interested in spiritual reading.

Historia
Despite the tumor-shrinking medical miracle that has bought her a few years, Hazel has never been anything but terminal, her final chapter inscribed upon diagnosis. But when a gorgeous plot twist named Augustus Waters suddenly appears at Cancer Kid Support Group, Hazel’s story is about to be completely rewritten. The Fault in Our Stars is insightful, bold, irreverent, and raw. It brilliantly explores the funny, thrilling, and tragic business of being alive and in love.

Good book, but had higher expectations.
Revisado: 01-10-19
I really like John Green from YouTube. I've never seen the movie. But I wanted to see what the hype was all about. This is a nice story, but it didn't take as many turns as I expected it to. I found the story predictable. This may be my own fault, because I set high expectations after hearing really good word-of-mouth. Still, I love the characters and the dialogue. The narration fit well. And the central romance is enthralling.

Historia
America is in crisis, from the university to the workplace. Toxic ideas first spread by higher education have undermined humanistic values, fueled intolerance, and widened divisions in our larger culture. The Diversity Delusion argues that the root of this problem is the belief in America’s endemic racism and sexism, a belief that has engendered a metastasizing diversity bureaucracy in society and academia.

Lack of solutions is frustrating.
Revisado: 12-31-18
Some points are valid in this book, but I am mostly bothered by how unabashedly biased they are and how condescending the rhetoric is. The Diversity Delusion is not attempting to convince anyone whom doesn't already agree with it's main tennats. My rating would be higher if the author offered actual solutions rather than scoffing at universities for offering "safe spaces" and navigating gender politics.

Historia
On January 12, 2010, a major earthquake struck near Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Hundreds of thousands of people died, and the greater part of the capital was demolished. Dr. Paul Farmer, U.N. deputy special envoy to Haiti, who had worked in the country for nearly thirty years treating infectious diseases like tuberculosis and AIDS, and former President Bill Clinton, the U.N. special envoy to Haiti, had just begun to work on an extensive development plan to improve living conditions in Haiti.

Emotionally visual. Enduringly hopeful.
Revisado: 12-30-18
This book vividly describes, in particular, stories from the day and aftermath of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. It also tells of the history, culture, and people of Haiti which allowed me a deeper insight into this tragic disaster. But my last impression is of hope and a call to action to the world to support our brothers and sisters in Haiti.

Historia
With Give and Take, Adam Grant not only introduced a landmark new paradigm for success but also established himself as one of his generation’s most compelling and provocative thought leaders. In Originals he again addresses the challenge of improving the world, but now from the perspective of becoming original: choosing to champion novel ideas and values that go against the grain, battle conformity, and buck outdated traditions. How can we originate new ideas, policies, and practices without risking it all?

Too Good for One Read
Revisado: 12-19-18
"Originals" is such an original book because of the personality that Grant applies to his writing and for the absorbing allegories in his research. There is so much rich information that my one knock against the book is that I feel the need to go back to it again and again after I finished it to get more out of it. But its re-readability is a plus, so that is why I ended up giving it five stars.

Historia
On Christmas Eve, 1818, in a small Austrian village, a local Catholic priest and a church organist composed a Christmas carol that changed the course of holiday music forever. Exactly two hundred years later, it’s not the holiday season until you’ve heard “Silent Night” in the car, at the store and on TV – all in the same day.
In Jingle Bell Pop, John Seabrook, acclaimed author of The Song Machine, takes us deep inside the holiday music business. We go behind the scenes to meet some of the producers, songwriters and recording artists responsible for the timeless tunes we hear on repeat between Thanksgiving and Christmas every year.

Really interesting stories of popular Christmas songs. Some unexpected. Some dark. Some simple. Some fun. I really enjoyed this telling of what it takes for a song to become a part of the Christmas "canon."
