Historia
From electrifying horror author Nick Cutter comes a haunting new novel, reminiscent of Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian and Stephen King's It, in which a trio of mismatched mercenaries is hired by a young woman for a deceptively simple task: check in on her nephew, who may have been taken against his will to a remote New Mexico backwoods settlement called Little Heaven. Shortly after they arrive, things begin to turn ominous.

Twisted Tale With Neat Characters
Revisado: 04-08-24
Cool, off the bath characters.
Creepy 'Monsters' or aliens or demons or whatever they may be.
I enjoyed this, but I have ADHD and it jumps around a little, so I was lost a couple times. No big issue though.
I dig this writer's prose and he can tell even a poor story well. This is a good story. Definitely worth a read. Maybe even a second.
Excellent naration.

Historia
All the stories in this collection from Stephen King are related to the Vietnam War. King fans will recognize echoes of The Dark Tower series in the collection's first story, "Low Men in Yellow Coats." As the characters develop over the next four stories, King's version of the Vietnam War becomes one of his most frightening tales ever.

Poorly Read, But Still Great
Revisado: 02-25-24
Hurt reads like he was in remedial English back in his school days. He often sounds like the word he just spoke surprised him.
I like when King reads. His nasal, honking goose voice is always charming.
Great book. Among my favourite King stories.

Good
Revisado: 02-21-24
Worth the listen.
The main character was annoying for the first half of the book. A boring narcissist who's always the victim...
I nearly gave up on the book because of her, but then the story developed and we learn that most of the things she hates her brother for weren't actually his fault etc and the characters start to feel a little less shallow. A Little. Haha
There are some fun and creepy scenes.
Kind of a PG-13 level read.
Reader does a good enough job, but her cookie monster voice for the granny gets annoying... Cringe-funny at first and then just annoying. She did a great job of making me hate the brother and sister as well. I actually wanted the puppets to win.
This book would've worked better as a novela.
It would've also been better if I'd read it at 11-12. I feel that is the intended audience.

Hard to Follow, but Good
Revisado: 02-21-24
I have ADHD. I'll start with admitting that.
This story is great at times, but sprawls in so many directions that I often found myself registering to chapters.
I was sick of the inbred priests before they gone. I felt that way about a few of the characters that you just get stuck for stretches of time.
There is some terrific writing here. The overall story and world created are cool.
The Shrike is creepy.
This does end abruptly almost like Dune. And like Dune, there are many subsequent books.
I may continue with the series when I get caught up on a few books in my que.
Recommended for hard core science fiction fans. I wouldn't consider this novel accessible to readers with a passing interest in Sci-Fi.

Dark Fairytale
Revisado: 02-21-24
Richly detailed world with interesting, though not overly complicated characters.
The reader is great, but I always kind of cringe when women voice men and sound like Cookie Monster. 😂
It's kind of a familiar tale we've heard before, but this telling is told well with strong, beautiful, dark imagery.
Really good. Good enough to be a favourite for some.
I'll probably revisit it again in this lifetime.

Pedestrian. Boring Lead.
Revisado: 02-19-24
The main character is a boring narcissist- One of those people that have no personality, so they try and use SJW in lieu of one.
The first third of the book is the protagonist talking up her achievements and dressing-down every other character that isn't exactly like her. there are two to three minute-long stretches where she just womansplains to grown-ass adults 🤣
They just take it in silence... Let that mermaid scientist judge them and tear apart their morals and politics and.... In a professional setting!😂
She never says anything nice about anyone. She even talks down on her research partner that keeps her poor, mermaid-studying ass full of pizza. She even picks the pizza they get that he pays for and patronizes him about eating red meat when he says he'd like some pepperoni just once....
The only people she likes and makes an effort to befriend are twin woman scientists that are deaf. well... One is deaf and her sister signs with her.
You guessed it, the main just has to be buddies with them for some solid SJW credulence 🤣
God... I really wanted to hang around to see her die, but just got too bored. I was also terrified she'd survive.
I'll give the author another shot. Maybe this one was just ruined for me by a character. For all I know, she wrote so obnoxious a character because she was planning a glorious death for her. It just went too long though. Hours of listening to that boring narcissist made me feel like I was being judged along with the other characters. 🤣
Harshest review I've maybe ever written.
I feel terrible, but I can't just give everything 4stars.

Revisado: 02-19-24
Crazy how close to reality this story is- Almost a little too close for comfort.
Does a great job of making you hate the monsters. I wanted to help...
My favorite character died halfway through, so I just kind of stopped caring and didn't finish.
It was good to that point though. 😂
I definitely recommend it. It's a fun book and maybe you'll luck out and have a different favourite character.

A Dark, Coming of Age Fairytale.
Revisado: 02-19-24
This reads like two stories in one- Kind of like Apocalypse Now. I think alot of people lost interest before leaving the school.
I really liked the second half of the story. I could visualize Shadowland almost as if I'd seen this book as a film as a child. It just gave me that nostalgic vibe that tingles with the enthusiasm of childhood.
It's not an action packed gore fest if that's what you're looking for. It's slow and deliberate and takes care to create a real world where a strange fairytale then unfolds.
I often had to ask myself "is this illusion or actually happening?" haha
Great book. I would've loved this book had I read it at 10-11 years old.
Sad we lost Peter.
Thanks for all the great memories, Mr Straub.

In upstate New York, in the woods around Woodstock, Dutchman's Creek flows out of the Ashokan Reservoir. Steep-banked, fast-moving, it offers the promise of fine fishing, and of something more, a possibility too fantastic to be true. When Abe and Dan, two widowers who have found solace in each other's company and a shared passion for fishing, hear rumors of the Creek, and what might be found there, the remedy to both their losses, they dismiss it as just another fish story.

A little Lovecraftian with elements of modern horror and some fairytale bits.
I felt like I knew the valley this takes place in, by the descriptive writing.
Eerie and atmosphereric.
Months later, I recall this story when hiking near creeks.
I forget the other characters for the most part, but I'll remember The Fisherman.
Great story
Perfect performance

Nutty. Nihilistic. Flatulent...
Revisado: 02-18-24
I loved this book as a kid. At a semi-innocent 13 years of age, it was totally insane. As an adult it's just... good. This book is best for teens/young adults.
I really didn't care for the narrator. He gave a fine performance, but didn't embody the main character to me at all. Then again, I was remembering Frank as he was in my mind as a tween... Maybe you'll dig the guy-Listen to a sample.
The baby scene and the kite scene have haunted me for years. Especially the kite scene. It's so surreal and sad.
Maybe the biggest twist ending I can recall reading.
