I don't know what I was expecting with this book, but whatever it was I don't think I got it. The narrator was very annoying and maybe that affected my judgement, but I did enjoy Chopper's earliest books much better.

If you've seen the Family Guy episode where Stewie keeps saying "cool hwip" then you'll understand what the narrator does for the whole twenty something hours of this audiobook.

That, however, is the only thing I didn't like about it. It's an interesting and sometimes funny saga that had me struggling to get my head around the fact that this book is non-fiction. There are so many lies and twists that seem so unbelievable at times but if you don't let that frustrate you then you should enjoy the story.

This is a truly fantastic book. I was totally bowled over by the story and couldn't stop listening. There's not much more to say, really, except that I recommend this book very, very highly.

Really enjoyed this audiobook. Mark Boyett is a great narrator and the story is first class, both inspiring and heart wrenching.

Really enjoyed this audiobook. It is a well written and well narrated account of life on the front line and of particular interest to me was the honest description of the conflicting emotions the author experienced before, during and after his involvement in war. It gives a different perspective which I found refreshing.

Thoroughly enjoyable book. Very well researched and written, and a heart wrenching story as well. Pat Tillman had a humility most of us should aspire to and was a man of great principles. His story alone is no more important than any other soldier killed in action, however the attempts by Government and Army officials to use it to their advantage (against his will) are appalling.

Scott Brick's narration is excellent (no idea how one reviewer thought he was condescending). Highly recommended audiobook.

Decent

Pretty good story, although I must disagree with the American accent deal - the narrator's attempts were terrible. It didn't detract from the story, though, which I enjoyed despite thinking there might have been a bit more to it when I downloaded it. I was expecting there to be more action rather than a detailed account of what it's like to be bombarded almost constantly by the enemy. This doesn't take anything away from the fact that all the soldiers involved deserve any recognition they received as it takes a special person to maintain composure under such circumstances. The main characters in the book are the sort of people you would want on your side should you be in a fight and their story is quite inspirational and well worth listening to.

An enthralling account of life as a soldier in Vietnam, told with an honesty that endears you to the author despite the sometimes graphic nature of the details. By his own admission, Caputo wanted to shock people with this book and there were a lot of occasions where he succeeded for me. There is no sugar coating, nor tales of his own heroics, just a decent account of a soldier and his comrades and the events that contributed to the deterioration of their mental state.
