Historia
Tchaikovsky is one of the most popular composers of all time. His melodies are known to many people who may never have heard his name. They crop up on mobile telephones, alarm clocks and answering machines as often as on records and concert programs. Like his music, the man himself was widely loved, but his inner life was fraught with sufferings, confusions and a deep vein of self-doubt. The drama of his emotional life is vividly reflected in his music, letters and diaries, all of which play a major part in this intimate portrait-in-sound.

Read them all. Concise, hilarious, informative, narrative, dramatic, and full of the actual music. They've given me completely different relationships with every composer, many of whom I already knew quite well

Why is data governance so ineffective? The truth is, data governance programs aren't designed for the way we run our data teams. They aren't even designed for a modern organization at all. They were designed when reports still came through inter-office mail.

Possibly the worst book I've ever read
Revisado: 01-01-25
Do not read this book.
Really should have started with a note from the acknowledgements, in which the author reveals she hates the subject matter. It's just a list of unexplained methods, specific recommendations without any consideration of organizational context, resources, or need, and perhaps the single worst description of machine learning I've ever heard. The author seems not to realize that the limits of her own understanding are not the boundaries of the world. An almost complete waste of time.
But if you want a laugh, don't miss the part where her hospital client says her recommendations will result in real human deaths, and she blames them for getting in the way of her extremely wise counsel.
And bonus points if you catch all the words the reader mispronounces.

Historia
First published in 1905, The Varieties of Religious Experience is a collection of lectures given at the University of Edinburgh in 1901 and 1902. William James was a psychologist and, as such, his interest in religion was not that of a theologian but of a scientist. In these 20 lectures, he discusses the nature and origin of religious belief. The average believer is one who has inherited his religion, but this will not do for James's inquiry.

terrific, if you like 19th century psychology
Revisado: 10-16-22
full of extremely interesting thoughts on and insights into religion, which seemed secure enough in their accuracy though I do wish there were a more contemporary version of these theories. overly long and slow, as is the case with nineteenth century academic writing, with a great deal of incomprehensible theory, but on the whole very worth it, and always pleasant to listen to, or tune out

Historia
A revelatory synthesis of cultural history and social psychology that shows how one-to-one collaboration drives creative success. Weaving the lives of scores of creative duos - from John Lennon and Paul McCartney to Marie and Pierre Curie, to Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak - Joshua Wolf Shenk identifies the core qualities of that dizzying experience we call "chemistry". Revealing the six essential stages through which creative intimacy unfolds, Shenk draws on new scientific research and builds an argument for the social foundations of creativity - and the pair as its primary embodiment.

good, fun, easy, not academic

liked it well enough, would appreciate a more rigorous treatment. the anecdotes were fun, numerous, and compelling, but I want the research front and center, more than one, dubious, study at a time

Good story, insubstantial telling
Revisado: 08-12-22
I wish I'd looked up more serious Hendrix biographies like Room of Mirrors (or whatever). The author of this seemed oddly ... like he didn't really care very deeply about his subject, and scandalized, or embarrassed, by things about him, in a way that led me to wonder what might have been missing or distorted.

Lots of examples, many very familiar from the news, not much tying it together. Shame though.
