Great insight into what police deal with.
Revisado: 08-22-19
Really enjoyed this book, the characters well fleshed out, all with their own complexities. It gives an excellent portrayal of life for someone who has PTSD and glimpses into life for female police officers.

Not knowing the name of his family or where he was from, he survived for weeks on the streets of Kolkata before being taken into an orphanage and adopted by a couple in Australia. Remarkable story
Revisado: 03-23-17
Would you listen to Lion again? Why?
Yes it is incredibly moving & a phenomenal story.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Saroo a remarkable little boy & now a remarkable adult.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I loved this story. I cried in the first 5 minutes & was moved to tears many times. When listening to the story of Saroo's early life in India then when he arrived in Kolkata I kept having to remind myself "He's only 5"!
Any additional comments?
Being an Australian I found the narration really quite difficult to listen to at times, particularly early on, I did get sort of used to it by about halfway. A Canadian trying to sound like an Australian born in India & this time not succeeding. I think it would have been great if you could have had the author narrate it.

Historia
In the spirit of Oliver Sacks Awakenings and the TV series House, Dr. Eric Manheimer's Twelve Patients is a memoir from the medical director of Bellevue Hospital that uses the plights of 12 very different patients - from dignitaries at the nearby UN, to supermax prisoners from Riker's Island, to illegal immigrants, and Wall Street tycoons - to illustrate larger societal issues.

I gasped audibly at times & cried at others
Revisado: 04-13-15
Would you consider the audio edition of Twelve Patients to be better than the print version?
No. I don't have the print version but I did see on Amazon 'sneak peek' at least 4 pages of acknowledgments that I didn't hear in the audible book.
What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?
I have a medical background but no longer work in the field - I found the stories of all patients devised for this book excellent but perhaps most compelling were the stories of 'Trauma Detroit' & 'Tanisha' for whom I cried many tears.
What about Eric Manheimer’s performance did you like?
I enjoyed Dr Manheimer's performance. (Spoiler alert) I found myself a little miffed by negative comments about his voice in other reviews, I kept thinking about them & thinking 'give the guy a break for goodness sake, the man has had throat cancer'! I found it a marvelous reminder of 'there but for fortune go any one of usI'.
Any additional comments?
With cuts to health funding by so many governments around the world places like Bellevue & other great teaching hospitals across the globe are fortunate indeed to have so many professionals who eschew private practice for public hospital work with a wide cross section of humanity.

Historia
Once upon a time, Michael Katakis lived in a place of big dreams, bright colours and sleight of hand. That place was America. One night, travelling where those who live within illusions should never go, he stared into the darkness and glimpsed a faded flag where shadows gathered, revealing another America.

Any additional comments?
Hearing a first person account of what I believe to be the reality in US health 'care' caused me further concern for our Australian health system.
What I enjoyed most about this book was the sprinkling throughout of insights into a marriage filled with love & respect, shared values & equity. I found the final chapter intensely moving. As soon as I'd finished listening I order the book online, I just had to have physical copy.

Historia
When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early 40s, the town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty facade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

The human condition wonderfully observed
Revisado: 11-22-12
Where does The Casual Vacancy rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Definitely in my top 3
What does Tom Hollander bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Tom Hollander's narration was fantastic - he added so much to the pleasure of listening to this book. So easy on the ear & each character so distinct.
Any additional comments?
I came to this book with an open mind. I was nearly turned off starting it by 'comparisons' to the 'Grey' books. I've not read the latter but for my money JK Rowling has captured magnificently the human condition in the sweeping breadth of its diversity. I laughed out loud & cried too. I loved Krystal & Sukvinder. My heart went out to so many of the characters, including Krystal's mother Terri.
I found the writing highly evocative; when the social worker describes entering the Wheedon home I almost gagged on the smell, not only the ammonia coming off of Robbie's nappies but metaphorically the stench of neglect and poverty.
I thought more than once we ought give more regard to 'children' if only because they'll soon be deciding the future for those of us already 'adults'. And it reminded me of the debate with regard to refugees and asylum seekers - when those who have reached 'safety' & made a better life for themselves want to turn around & pull up the ladder so as to prevent others less fortunate doing the same.
I've been so keen to discuss it with others, I ask all my friends if they've read it & have been disappointed that all have been put off by negative publicity. I couldn't recommend it more highly!
