Eh. Not what I've Come to Expect.
Revisado: 11-08-21
Juliet Marillier is my favorite author. I own all of her books and I respect her immensely. I felt like this book just didn't do her justice. I understand its an expanded short story, but it felt kind of disjointed and I think that it needed more time to sizzle. Some of the things that occurred seemed to happen out of nowhere.

Historia
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Blown Away.
Revisado: 06-25-18
I started this book after hearing a lot of hype about Brandon Sanderson in the Wheel of Time community. I already know the narrators and I have appreciated them on the Wheel of Time series. So, I figured it had to be mostly decent and I needed a break from The Wheel of Time series anyway. I didn't want to burn out.
At first, the story was slow. I couldn't figure out the connections between all the stories and I was easily annoyed by the narrators pronouncing names differently.
But wow, once you get past the character/world building mundaneness, the story really takes off. The characters are loveable and I find myself very loyal to them. The climax was intense. I'm excited to listen to the rest of the series.
So my suggestion to you, push past the boring parts because the last 9 hours (or so) are worth it.

This is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man's search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.

Now that the gates of Hell have closed...
Revisado: 01-08-18
This book was recommended to me by friend and coworker. It has a "Harry Potter" kind of feel to it, but a little more grown up. There is some really great humor that actually made me laugh out loud.
If I had to describe this book to someone, I would say that it's about a powerful kid who is too cocky for his own good and puts himself into some sticky situations while trying to find out more information about the murder of his parents.
Initially, I wasn't excited about Nick Podehl as the narrator of this novel. I'm in the middle of listening to The Wheel of Time and I have certain voice expectations of my high-fantasy, however, after the first couple chapters, I was fully sold with the narration. Podehl did a great job.

Born to a prominent Chicago judge and his stifled socialite wife, Mia Dennett moves against the grain as a young inner-city art teacher. One night, Mia enters a bar to meet her on-again, off-again boyfriend. But when he doesn't show, she unwisely leaves with an enigmatic stranger. With his smooth moves and modest wit, Colin Thatcher seems at first like a safe one-night stand. But following Colin home will turn out to be the worst mistake of Mia's life.

Enjoyable
Revisado: 12-02-17
I enjoyed my time listening to this book. The storyline seems pretty straightforward as you go along. There’s some twists, but they’re not very shocking, almost anticipated. The narration is well done for the character they’re portraying, however, when they try to do each other’s voices, it’s pretty silly. Overall, a good listen.

Historia
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

Terrifying - In The Classic Sense
Revisado: 11-13-17
Classic horror novels always make me laugh a little because I'm entirely desensitized to this kind of a "terror". However, I can always appreciate how a novel would have been received when it was first published, and let me tell you... Dracula probably scared the knickers off of a lot of people.
First thing you should know is that the cast and narration are amazing. So many big names: Alan Cumming, Tim Curry, and Simon Vance? Come on, how great is that? At the same time though, I lost track of which character was speaking at times. Since everything is done in first person, you have to work by process of elimination.
Overall, I enjoyed listening to this novel. The narration was fantastic and the story is classic. Don't expect to be scared, but do expect to be entertained.

I don't know. I guess I didn't hate my time listening to this novel. I can't imagine ever recommending it to someone else to read/listen to.
It's sad and heartfelt but also predictable and uneventful. This may make a great short Facebook video.
The narrator was pretty decent, although a lot of the book is monotonous.

I was hesitant and surprised.
Revisado: 11-07-17
My mom recommends books to me all the time. It’s not that I don’t trust her judgement, it’s that she’s a little bit more of a hippie than I am. So I’m normally hesitant to listen to her suggestions.
I’m glad I went against that impulse this time. This book is short, but full of inspiring ideas about creativity and how to welcome it into your life.
I was also happy that the author didn’t butcher the narration; which seems to happen whenever an author narrates their own book.
I’ve already suggested this book to an artistic friend.

Revisado: 06-02-17
I've always been intrigued by serial killers and this book has no shortage of them. It's a healthy mix of serial killers and normal day-to-day FBI jazz. I found it extremely interesting and it kept my attention the whole way through.
And now... it's a show on Netflix! Yay! Mind Hunter is based on this book.
