Historia
Raised in the historic southern splendor of Natchez, Mississippi, Penn Cage learned all he knows of honor and duty from his father, Dr. Tom Cage. But now the beloved family doctor has been accused of murdering Viola Turner, the African-American nurse with whom he worked in the dark days of the 1960s. Penn is determined to save his father, but Tom, stubbornly invoking doctor-patient privilege, refuses to even speak in his own defense.

Theoretically smart people do stupid things
Revisado: 09-24-14
What disappointed you about Natchez Burning?
Very interesting start. However, the main characters kept doing stupid things, again and again. I kept listening hoping it would work out in a reasonable manner. NOPE.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
I didn't mind the narrator as others have. This was the first Giles book I've listened to. Heard an interview on NPR.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Natchez Burning?
I would not so much have cut scenes, but would have paced them a little faster and would have the characters act in reasonable ways. For example, Penn knows the bad guy has done many horrible things (including kidnapping and killing people who know about him) and then he takes his word and wanders out of a building without any protection. Just one example of unbelievable stupidity.
Any additional comments?
A good idea for a story line gone incredibly wrong. Found myself shouting "How stupid!" as I worked in the garden. Had to hold my tongue as I frightened neighborhood dogs!

Disappointed -- wrong category
Revisado: 06-13-14
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Nothing
What could Dani Pettrey have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
This is the wrong category for me. I thought it would be a climbing mystery set in Alaska. Rather it was a Christian Romance.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
Performance ok
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Not really, lots of repeptition, stupid action, and teenager romance under guise of adults.
Any additional comments?
Please, better categorize books. I could see some people would like this.

No sympathetic characters and a ridiculous story. I was very disappointed. I was expecting a fun romp with clever dialog. Didn't find it here. The performers were good, however.

Historia
The last thing Jake Bryan knew was the roar of the World Trade Center collapsing on top of him and his fellow firefighters. The man in the hospital bed remembers nothing. Not rushing with his teammates up the stairway of the south tower to help trapped victims. Not being blasted from the building. And not the woman by his bedside. Jamie Bryan will do anything to help her beloved husband regain his memory, and with it their storybook family life with their daughter, Sierra. But that means helping Jake rediscover the one thing Jamie has never shared with him: his deep faith in God.

Liked concept, not "God" stuff
Revisado: 07-08-11
Interesting idea. Didn't realize when I purchased it that it was a "god' book. Same hollow stuff I've heard for years. Didn't finish. Would not have purchased had I read more reviews. My error on that. Amazes me that people are still so naive. And they may vote.

I really enjoyed Dunning's first 2 books. This started well, but the ending just wasn't convincing. I felt taken advantage of.

Can't care about any of these people
Revisado: 10-01-10
I looked forward to this after reading glowing reviews. There wasn't a single character that I could care about. Shallow, self-absorbed people -- I didn't find this to be an American Classic at all.

Supposedly smart people doing stupid things
Revisado: 05-25-09
I agree with reviewers who were surprised at the highly positive reviews. My first and last Harlan Coben book. The main character, a doctor, prides himself on being able to focus in tough situations, but he so frequently did stupid things that I lost all interest in the plot and the people. Totally unbelievable and too often droning. I did hear it to the end just to see how bad it was. Only positive note was the reader.

who cares
Revisado: 07-03-08
I've read all of Nevada Barr's previous book, but didn't like this at all. I enjoy descriptions of the parks she's set her books in, but this had entirely too much of people trodding through the winter back country apparently without a clue of proper winter procedures. So much was unbelievable that I really didn't care.

not bella
Revisado: 05-08-08
After the first 10 minutes, little was believable in this tale. We're supposed to believe the victims sat around complacently for 2 weeks? and then months? The author's arguments for the incredible denial of victims was way too much for me and from what I've read of actual happenings. This had fairly favorable reviews so I kept listening hoping for something good.

Historia
Reminiscent of the best in today's suspense, from Jeffery Deaver's roller-coaster twists to James Patterson's cinematic pacing, Run the Risk introduces a blazing new talent in Scott Frost. As one of the writers behind Twin Peaks and The X-Files, he knows something about creating eerie and atmospheric tension. In this brilliant novel, he gives us a heroine who faces a challenge no one can ever be completely prepared for and a story as urgently and viscerally told as any in recent memory.

Revisado: 12-21-05
A whining homicide lieutenant and dysfunctional mother stays on a case involving danger to her daughter. Very unprofessional. Also, it would have saved us all money and irritation if she’d just gotten off of the case. The author tries to pull our strings with stupid ploys and fake emotion. Another reviewer liked the plot twists; I felt they were so stupid and contrived I was continually annoyed and couldn’t believe the whining and ineptness could continue for so long. Please start a turkey category.
