Historia
Early in the morning of Monday, July 8, 1895, 13-year-old Robert Coombes and his 12-year-old brother, Nattie, set out from their small, yellow-brick terraced house in East London to watch a cricket match at Lord's. Their father had gone to sea the previous Friday, the boys told their neighbors, and their mother was visiting her family in Liverpool. Over the next 10 days, Robert and Nattie spent extravagantly, pawning their parents' valuables to fund trips to the theatre and the seaside. But as the sun beat down on the Coombes house, a strange smell began to emanate.

With ribald humor, wit, and incredible insight, Alan seamlessly moves back and forth in time, integrating stories from his childhood in Scotland and his experiences today as the celebrated actor of film, television, and stage. At times suspenseful, at times deeply moving, but always incredibly brave and honest, Not My Father's Son is a powerful story of embracing the best aspects of the past and triumphantly pushing the darkness aside.

Honest and raw
Revisado: 04-28-24
This memoir about an abusive father, combined with the search for details regarding the mysterious death of a grandfather, is both heartbreaking and empowering. Alan Cumming performs his own book as no one else could — he’s amazing.

Historia
In the world of Warbreaker, each person is born endowed with the power of one Breath―which can be sold and collected by others, then used to Awaken objects and even corpses to do their bidding. A few individuals who die in glory return as gods, with the power of thousands of Breath, but no memory of their mortal lives―and are enthroned in the Court of Gods in Hallandren’s capital. To Vivenna and Siri, princesses of Idris, the abuse of Breath and the claim of the Returned to be gods are repugnant blasphemy.

Start a dinking game…
Revisado: 12-19-23
Drink every time someone “raises an eyebrow” or cocks their head. Finish your drink any time someone swears by the colors, or one of the sisters’ hair changes color unintentionally (even though they can supposedly control it).
I guess it wasn’t so bad but those things did get on my nerves after a while. I did find the concept of “Breath” and the story of these people and their countries on the brink of war interesting — there was some good world building here. Vivenna especially had a compelling arc and did not just sit in a room for the whole story like her sister Siri did.
The narrator Alyssa Brenanan was excellent. I never had trouble telling characters apart. Her voices were distinct without being overdone.

Great story, stellar narration
Revisado: 10-31-23
Sinon Vance gives an amazing performance of this story, with unique — but never over-the-top — voices for every single character in the book, including men and women. I will definitely seek out more books read by this exceptional narrator.
This story follows a reticent man tasked by a famed police officer to help him locate the lost Dauphin, who, after being imprisoned as a child, may or may not now be alive. I was hooked early and found the historical facts as interesting as the story’s plot. This was well-written, easy to enjoy (though sometimes gross — stuff was gross back then), and the performance took this story to another level.

Historia
Not content with investing his fortune and watching it grow, multibillionaire Howard Christian buys rare cars that he actually drives, acquires collectible toys that he actually plays with, and builds buildings that defy the imagination. But now his restless mind has turned to a new obsession: cloning a mammoth. In a barren province of Canada, a mammoth hunter financed by Christian has made the discovery of a lifetime: an intact frozen woolly mammoth. But what he finds during the painstaking process of excavating the huge creature baffles the mind.

As good as I remember
Revisado: 10-26-23
I read this book years ago in paperback and enjoyed it and it still holds up. There are still things that bug me about it (as then) like, if you’re working on a time machine found with an ice age frozen man, would you not keep some survival equipment on you at all times?! I don’t know, that seemed logical to me but apparently not to the genius-level math wizard protagonist. There were other points where people had moments of plot-induced stupidity, but for the most part I think this book is a lot of fun, really creative, and I liked the twist at the end.
Alex Boyles does a great job of performing this book.

Enchanting Story of Love and Hope
Revisado: 10-26-23
This story read like a fairy tale, but one I’ve never heard before, and didn’t know what would happen. I appreciated the message of love and acceptance despite hardship. Lisa Flanagan did an excellent job of voicing all the characters.

Came across as YA
Revisado: 10-26-23
I get it, book protagonists are super human. But as someone who studied music theory and performance for years, taking multiple lessons per week with practice every day on two different instruments, and still never achieved what I considered to be a professional skill level, I find it *a stretch* that Rune learns to read music, play a new instrument, and become an incredible performer in a matter of months. She also seems to already know every song ever composed by heart. But okay, all that aside. This seems like the kind of book I might have liked in high school. It’s full of really sweet people and really evil people, and you always know which is which — no gray area here. As the book progresses, it seems to move away from Rune’s story and focus on building up interest in the characters for the next book, who I wasn’t interested in—I would have rather learned more about Rune. I’m not sure if I want to read the second book and go through the same bait-and-switch for the third.
Christa Lewis did a good job performing this.

What’s to be done about a jaywalking moose? A bear caught breaking and entering? A murderous tree? Three hundred years ago, animals that broke the law would be assigned legal representation and put on trial. These days, as New York Times best-selling author Mary Roach discovers, the answers are best found not in jurisprudence but in science: the curious science of human-wildlife conflict, a discipline at the crossroads of human behavior and wildlife biology.

As fascinating and funny as the others
Revisado: 10-26-23
I have read several of Mary Roach’s other books (physically with my eyeballs) and this one stands up with the others. It’s well-researched, well-written, and she can still make me laugh.
I would argue that she’s maybe not the best choice to read her own book, but I’ll read anything she’s written.

Fantastic!
Revisado: 10-25-23
I had never read Tanith Lee despite seeing her books everywhere when I worked at a bookstore in the 1980s. I wish I had—this was fantastic! Her turn of phrase is quite poetic. After listening to this audiobook, I purchased the physical book and a couple of her other books as well.
Susan Duerden narrated this beautifully and I will seek out other books she has performed.
Overall, this was excellent!
