Historia
From spooky stories and real-life ghost hunting, to shows about murder and serial killers, we are fascinated by death—and we owe these modern obsessions to the Victorian age. Death and the Victorians explores a period in history when the search for the truth about what lies beyond our mortal realm was matched only by the imagination and invention used to find it. Walk among London’s festering graveyards, where the dead were literally rising from the grave. Visit the Paris Morgue, where thousands flocked to view the spectacle of death every single day.

Very well written and engaging. The narration was well done and I enjoy hearing about the true Victorian Era as opposed to reading the romances, which are nice but I crave information. This book is chock full of it and it covers some of the most interesting topics of the era. Highly recommend if you are a history buff or just someone wanting to know what things were really like back then. All the stars.

Historia
In 2019, author John Green met Henry Reider, a young tuberculosis patient at Lakka Government Hospital in Sierra Leone. John became fast friends with Henry, a boy with spindly legs and a big, goofy smile. In the years since that first visit to Lakka, Green has become a vocal advocate for increased access to treatment and wider awareness of the healthcare inequities that allow this curable, preventable infectious disease to also be the deadliest, killing over a million people every year. In Everything Is Tuberculosis, John tells Henry’s story.

Addictive Reading
Revisado: 04-15-25
This audiobook by John Green made me cry, wish, dream, hope for everyone fighting TB. Particularly today. I understand that there are problems with giving out too many antibiotics but when they are available to a patient they should be used. My heart goes out to everyone who has and is suffering with this horrific disease. My twin passed in 2018 of lung cancer. I imagine it is pretty similar in death as his was. Thank you for writing this book. It was thoughtful and well written with wonderful narration. Highly recommend.

Historia
Belief in ghosts is surprisingly common worldwide. Mysterious glowing orbs, unexplained chills, things that literally go bump in the night: signs of paranormal activity have reportedly surged during the pandemic. As have specialist investigators, organized ghost hunts, eerie podcasts, TV shows and reports of everyday hauntings. Sharing the details of some well-known and particularly mysterious hauntings together with some less-well-known tales and personal stories, Theresa explores these ghostly encounters through four categories of hauntings: residual, poltergeist, inhuman and intelligent.

Informative and Interesting
Revisado: 11-13-24
Whether you are a skeptic or believer in paranormal phenomenon, this book will engage with you. It truly is the best written book of it's kind in the last decade. There are histories to explore, concepts about the how and why's of different types of phenomenon and it is written without bias one way or the other, clearly allowing the reader to judge the information as they will.
Narration was beautiful and I feel lucky to have stumbled across this book. This is the book I've been searching for!

Historia
Madame Restell is a sharp, witty Gilded Age medical history which introduces us to an iconic, yet tragically overlooked, feminist heroine: a glamorous women’s healthcare provider in Manhattan, known to the world as Madame Restell. A celebrity in her day with a flair for high fashion and public, petty beefs, Restell was a self-made woman and single mother who used her wit, her compassion, and her knowledge of family medicine to become one of the most in-demand medical workers in New York.

An Important Book
Revisado: 10-08-24
The book is well represented by it's description. Very interesting how knowing history can throw perspective onto a current topic of abortion and women's rights. I found this book was well researched, quite entertaining and well performed. I recommend everyone listen to this book.
TRIGGER WARNING: There's some anti-republican sentiment, so for those who are very touchy about anyone saying anything anti-Trump, you might feel something.
I loved this book myself. I found that it was exactly as harsh as is fair and represented the flaws of the Madame Restell as well as her achievement towards helping women.

Excellent Story
Revisado: 09-02-24
This is a rare find for me, a book that I thought was going to be about one thing and turned into a completely other thing. I will not spoil this story. It must be listened to for yourself. But it's write up is what it is about, but not everything is what you think. Kept me wondering the entire time through about what would happen next. It also felt vaguely reminiscent of the works of John Saul and a bit like Stephen King, although Ms. Kurtagich's style is her own.
Give this one a shot. It is very well narrated, by my personal favorite narrator, Imogen Church. The story is well told with convincing characterizations.
Perfect for a spooky fall read.

Revisado: 08-19-24
I thoroughly enjoyed "The Guests". This book takes a deep dive into trauma and it's aftermath in the life of a fictional family. Although this is a novel, it went deeper than most I've read lately. Smart, haunting and deeply character driven, I would recommend this book to people who enjoy Freida McFadden and Ruth Ware fans.

Nestled deep in Litchfield Hills, Connecticut, a 1790 farmhouse sits near the epicenter of a paranormal commotion. The family that resides there regularly encounters its own ancestors and strangers - human and nonhuman - who seemingly occupy the same physical space in our world while remaining in their own parallel worlds. When famous ghost hunters Ed and Lorraine Warren investigated, they dubbed it "Ghost Central".

All over the place

This book changes gears so fast you would think they were driving in the Indy 500. The narration is average and the information seems dubious at best.
Although I do study the paranormal myself, I found this book unhelpful at best and outrageous at worst.

This was a very good choice for me, but for some I can see how this might be a slow burn type book. However, if you enjoy women's lit and a bit of domestic thriller vibes, this one might be just your cup of tea.
A side note about the narration: I enjoyed it, felt that the narrator was skilled and clear spoken. However, the cadence was one that does take a moment to accustom yourself to so don't give up if at first blush you think the narration is off. There is a structure and well orated way she is performing which I found overall to be quite pleasing.
Perfect for a rainy weekend.

Another Book for the Favorite's Shelf!
Revisado: 02-07-24
If you were ever a teenager with a crush on your teacher, this might give you tingles once more--- but these feelings will be more frightening than those you remember!
This book caught my attention from the start and it's characters kept my attention all the way through. It's beautifully performed by the narrators. If you enjoyed listening/reading to"The Coworker" by McFadden, then this one will fit perfectly into that "brainspace".
The twists are intensely rewarding too.
Already looking forward to whatever book Ms. McFadden gifts us with next!

Triggering Content
Revisado: 01-31-24
Although this story is a work of fiction, it relates to many very serious themes of childhood sexual abuse, neglect and trauma as well as really encompassing the feeling of dissociation. I have D.I.D and am struggling with these themes myself. And this is what it is like in my experience. The framing device is nuanced, the performances by the narrators was spot on and story was deep. If you want a tear jerker- but a fictional one- this book is a good choice. Just be warned, there are some very graphic description of things in there that are NSFW or for little ears. But this will be heading straight to my favorites list.
