Historia
It is spring 1919, and John Sawtelle’s imagination has gotten him into trouble … again. Now John and his newlywed wife, Mary, along with their two best friends and their three dogs, are setting off for Wisconsin’s northwoods, where they hope to make a fresh start—and, with a little luck, discover what it takes to live a life of meaning, purpose and adventure. But the place they are headed for is far stranger and more perilous than they realize, and it will take all their ingenuity, along with a few new friends—human, animal, and otherworldly—to realize their dreams.

Historia
In early 2021, popular artist Anna Marie Tendler checked herself into a psychiatric hospital following a year of crippling anxiety, depression and self-harm. Over two weeks, she underwent myriad psychological tests, participated in numerous therapy sessions, connected with fellow patients and experienced profound breakthroughs, such as when a doctor noted, “There is a you inside that feels invisible to those looking at you from the outside.”

Poor girl, needs way more therapy
Revisado: 08-24-24
I don’t understand how her “friends” could have let her publish this book. I’ve been on both sides of therapy and know she needs a lot more work and needs to listen to her therapists. Male and female both. The crazy hate of men is unfortunate and speaks to how she needs to lay open her mind more, blame less, seek real answers not what is politically correct terminology. I think the report she says is biased and wrong cuz it’s written by a man is actually an accurate diagnosis. On the one hand the hospital was a savior for her on the other hand she dismisses the diagnosis and action plan…..wtf…..that’s not how you evolve through therapy. She’s playing a game with everyone around her. Sorry, you wrote the book, you opened yourself to these truths about you.

Historia
Michael Crichton, creator of Jurassic Park, ER, Twister, and Westworld, had a passion project he’d been pursuing for years, ahead of his untimely passing in 2008. Knowing how special it was, his wife, Sherri Crichton, held back his notes and the partial manuscript until she found the right author to complete it: James Patterson, the world’s most popular storyteller.

Horrible!
Revisado: 06-27-24
Everything in this is horrible. I wanted to give it a try because I live here on Big Island. I tried to cut them some slack because I live here, so of course it’s off a bit, but that bit turned into an enormous crater, Worst narration of a book set in the islands EVER produced.

Historia
We live in a place everyone calls paradise. Sure, Kauai’s beautiful, with empty beaches, drip-castle mountains, and perfect surf...but we’ve been "camping" for six months, eating boiled chicken feed for breakfast, and wearing camouflage clothes so no one sees us trespassing in our jungle hideout. The cockroaches leave rainbow colors all over everything from eating the crayons we left outside the tent, and now a tractor is coming to scrape our camp into the river. Standing in front of the tent in my nightgown, I know my own truth: I just want to be normal.

I am so grateful for this beautifully told story. Different island different parents but otherwise fully my story. Too much here to process all in one go, I’m sure I will listen to it again.
But even if it didn’t touch me so personally I’d still give it 5 stars. The writing is gorgeous and honest and the narration is spot on perfect!

Historia
Now in his sixties, big-wave surfer Joe Sharkey has passed his prime and is losing his “stoke.” The younger surfers around the breaks on the north shore of Oahu still idolize the Shark, but his sponsors are looking elsewhere. One night, while driving home from a bar after one too many, Joe accidentally kills a stranger near Waimea, a tragedy that sends his life out of control. As the repercussions of the accident spiral ever wider, Joe's devoted girlfriend, Olive, throws herself into uncovering the dead man’s identity and helping Joe find vitality and refuge in the waves again.

Needed a native speaker from the islands to narrat
Revisado: 04-27-21
I was expecting a lot when I saw this new book. Mostly I was rewarded, I think Theroux gives a good take on being haole in Hawaii and on being in a watermans world. I would have enjoyed it sooo much more if it had been a native speaker. Not only is the Hawaiian pidgin awful he can’t even get place names right. Hopefully they will re-record this book, the author should insist.

Historia
Cyril Avery is not a real Avery - or at least that's what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn't a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead.

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

This may be a bit of a plod at times, and I doubt I'd have made it through the written version, but this audiobook has made an impression and I've thought about it numerous times since finishing it. That's the mark of a good book for me.

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.
