Historia
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the Earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

absorbing world with complex characters
Revisado: 04-24-19
Rich and conflicted characters, creative and intriguing world. N. K. Jemisin is a very talented writer, she works the timelines and characters into a mysterious and intricate vision. The book has many dark and heavy moments, it's a difficult place marred by trying times and overwhelming fear and prejudice. So not a happy go lucky book if that's what you're looking for. The only thing I'm iffy about is the voice actress. She's talented, but often the inflection of a characters voice feels out of place with what they're saying and it breaks the books spell. This is also very much my personal opinions but I haaaatteee the voice she uses for Schaffa. It just sounds Irish, hesitant and less melodic than the writing suggested.

Inventive engaging and thoughtful
Revisado: 03-01-19
I enjoyed this book far more than expected. the author layered perspectives and storylines that kept it engaging and intriguing. Although I must admit that I'm not too inclined to go on a mission to pick the story apart in any way, in large part because of how wonderfully inventive of a character/idea Tchaikovsky had for the new planets citizens. It was a very enjoyable book to get lost in.

The Galahad, a faster-than-light spacecraft, carries 50 scientists and engineers on a mission to prepare Kepler 452b, Earth's nearest habitable neighbor at 1400 light years away. With Earth no longer habitable and the Mars colony slowly failing, they are humanity's best hope. After 10 years in a failed cryogenic bed - body asleep, mind awake - William Chanokh's torture comes to an end as the fog clears, the hatch opens, and his friend and fellow hacker, Tom, greets him...by stabbing a screwdriver into his heart. This is the first time William dies.

Frustrating plot holes, a little predictable
Revisado: 02-27-19
Despite that it's still engaging enough to want to listen to more, could spark good debates. There are still a few of the main characters choices that drive me a bit nuts and seem to have been glossed over to keep the plot rolling despite having the chance to unravel it. I don't want to throw out any spoilers, but if you're into space exploration and The Martian style space survival this books had very little of it. More of a Matrix sort of feel.

Fantastic learning technique, muddied vocalization
Revisado: 01-14-19
His technique for getting a hang of the tones is super helpful and sticks really easily! In it he says you won't need another language learning program and while I believe it I am also using Rosetta Stone and Duolingo because I want to learn the written language too. I feel like Mr. Thomas' system gives the essential tone nuances that neither of those programs do.
The audio book itself starts off at a slow pace and then feels like it speeds up really quickly. I've listened to it about 4 or 5 times now and am now able to keep up and not feel lost. Which is nice, the more you practice the slower the audio book feels and the easier it gets.
My only real complaint is the 2 non native speakers practicing with you on the audiobook. They misspeak sometimes, or don't have the inflection right and when they are corrected they often repeat it again. I lose the correct version too quickly and begin worrying that I'm learning their version and not the native speakers. The guy practicing is usually too hesitant and quiet, it's a uncertain model to have repeating most things to you.
Still definitely worth it though, very helpful and I'm buying the next book now.

Revisado: 12-06-18
I listened to all three books in three days. It's so engaging, I'm in love with the characters and the wonderful twisting plot. So many exciting turns! The narrator does a very good job with the voices and hits with the right amount of emotion. The only ire I have is needing to wait until April for the fourth book.

Mr. Carlisle is looking for an admin. Apply within. I'm way overqualified, but the economy doesn't care. After six months of job searching, I'm flat broke and mostly desperate. Rent is due in a week, my roommate sucks and is ready to toss me out, and I need an answer - fast! >Nothing prepared me for the man in the suit. Not two steps into the office and my panties burst into flame. The word "handsome" doesn't do him justice. Lucifer would slap him a high-five.

A typical plot line and characters
Revisado: 11-26-18
Super generic irritating characters. Super controlling, angry, emotionally unavailable and scarred, overly wealthy and handsome man who gets angry when the woman won't accept the lavish spending on her. She's awkward, overly neurotic, conflicted, childish, defiant but submissive (what real adult stomps their foot and huffs in the workplace?? And how is that cute?) The plotline is overly predictable, it fetishizes wealth like we get wet at the thought of shopping sprees and it's just meh. The sex scenes are great though, worth skipping around for those.

Historia
In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue - Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is - she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

Definitely for the teens
Revisado: 11-12-18
Obvious plot twists and frustratingly dense lead character, not for story analyzers or the non-angsty. Enjoyed the set up to the dystopian future, the scenery created is well done too. But I found myself often yelling in frustration at the lead character. She's supposed to be analytical and intelligent, usually she is, but she completely fails to make the most obvious connections. All to create a thin veil of mystery and build tension in the plot, despite it being out of character. Also, can we stop passing off violent, moody men as attractive? Four may be tortured and deep but he's still a far more controlling love interest than would be healthy to tolerate. Not an ideal boyfriend, no matter how hot.

Historia
Jennifer Romolini started her career as an awkward 27-year-old misfit, navigated her way through New York media, and became a boss - an editor in chief, an editorial director, and a vice president - all within little more than a decade. Her book, Weird in a World That's Not, asserts that being outside the norm and achieving real, high-level success are not mutually exclusive, even if the perception of the business world often seems otherwise, even if it seems like only office-politicking extroverts are set up for reward.

She spoke right to my insecure soul
Revisado: 09-05-18
I don't doubt that I'll play this book again and again, she is assuring, honest and optimistic enough to light a fire under your ass. I probably fall exactly in with the target audience, I have no problem with the swearing (if you're sensitive to it though, there's a lot). Thoroughly enjoyed her included personal history and the advice given feels applicable and usable. Super, super loved this!
