Historia
A Sunday Times number one bestseller in the United Kingdom, this is the intimate and revealing autobiography of Margaret Rhodes, first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II and niece of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. Margaret was born into the Scottish aristocracy, into a now almost vanished world of privilege. Royalty often came to stay, and her house was run in the style of Downton Abbey. During the Second World War, she "lodged" at Buckingham Palace while she worked for MI5.

Have some tea, Love!
Revisado: 01-24-23
Charming book! It felt like a chat with your favorite aunt—the one who is adventurous, optimistic, empathetic, and humorous. This is a brief but engaging glimpse of personal and public events from the 1930s into the 2000s through the eyes of an unpretentious woman who happened to rub elbows with several well known figures around the globe in addition to the royal family. The narrator was perfect, too!

Historia
It’s Labor Day weekend, 1935, and the Darling Dahlias—the garden club in little Darling, Alabama—are trying to keep their cool at the end of a sizzling summer. This isn’t easy, though, since there’s a firebug on the loose in Darling. He—or she!—strikes without apparent rhyme or reason, and things have gotten to the point where nobody feels safe. What’s more, a dangerous hurricane is poised to hurl itself in Darling’s direction, while a hurricane of a different sort is making a whirlwind campaign stop: the much-loved-much-hated senator from Louisiana, Huey P. Long.

A cup of hot cocoa on a winter's day
Revisado: 11-10-22
Listening to this book warmed me like a cup of hot cocoa on a cold winter day. This series is the best, and this book in particular was terrific. As with other books in the series, it is written with historical accuracy, engaging writing and an ensemble of compelling characters that feel like old friends There is a deft weaving together of threads from each character's story into the larger fabric of the book's narrative. Despite taking place in the 1930s it feels completely relevant to our times as the characters deal with many of the same concerns and fears we may have had. The characters fortitude and care for one another (something I grew up with in my small hometown) felt honest, and left me feeling encouraged and hopeful.

Historia
Finally, Flora Hyde-Clare has wrest the narrative from Beatrice by finding her own compelling murder mystery to solve. Well, it’s not entirely her own because the victim is her cousin’s former beau Mr. Theodore Davies, whose father cruelly separated the young lovers (though not so cruelly, for it left the door open for Bea to woo the duke of Kesgrave).

Stay with it
Revisado: 04-16-22
I’ve enjoyed the first books about Beatrice, but was less certain about a book featuring her flighty cousin. At first, I was slightly irritated with this character’s seemingly shallow mindset, although understanding she was acting as one might expect from a very young woman in this time period and society, I kept with it. Fortunately, with deft writing, lively characters and an interesting plot, the story and characters became more intriguing. One I made it past the first few chapters, I truly enjoyed this light mystery and budding romance.

Delightful peek into the palace
Revisado: 03-29-22
I enjoyed the first book in this series and the second was equally enjoyable. It isn’t often I come across a story that feels so authentic and plausible (even tho it certainly is fiction). I love that the queen quietly, calmly and with keen insight and intelligence sets things in motion while her competent staff member Rosie does the leg work—all under the noses of more senior staff who don’t realize their jobs are made easier by the efforts of the 2 women. I appreciate that the queen is not a caricature, but acts and thinks and ruminates about everything one might expect and hope for a woman who has had some 90 years on this earth and experienced so much. And thankfully she is not portrayed as a sweet, dotty old woman, but smart, pragmatic, witty and wise. Rosie, ex-military, is also a strong, brave and smart. This is not a wild and blustery ride, but a thoughtfully and intelligently crafted story that peels back the layers one by one until the last page. Also a great peek into the royal staff and inner workings of the palace and what it takes to keep things running smoothly. Absolutely my favorite series, and I eagerly anticipate the next book!

Twists and turns galore
Revisado: 07-26-21
I’ve enjoyed all the books in this series so far, because in addition to intriguing plots, I always learn about a person or historical event that is completely new to me—usually outside of the “western civilization” history I learned in school. Also gives me lots of ideas for places I’d like to visit. This one was especially enjoyable—packed full of interesting things (automations, lost treasure, Paris!) with plenty of twists and turns that moves the story along at a brisk pace. The characters—both recurring and specific to this book—are thoroughly enjoyable and varied—diabolical, fun, mysterious and/or delightfully intelligent. Looking forward to the next one!

Revisado: 01-05-21
This is hands down the best audible original I’ve listened to—ever. Unknown but compelling story of NIH, patients and dedicated doctors who moved medical knowledge ahead by leaps and bounds during the past 50 years. Inspiring and fascinating. And Alda is a great host and interviewer.

Lovely escape into 1930s English Village Mystery
Revisado: 10-06-20
Agatha Christie-style mystery of the highest order — interesting and authentic characters, a plethora of unusual suspects, great narration, delightful setting in small English village. I thought I had this figured out several times, but was completely surprised at the end. What a rare treat this was!!

Intriguing Story
Revisado: 09-27-20
I found this true story to be a wonderful narrative about the tenacity of one woman and how she solved a generations old family story, and I learned some Prussian history along the way. The audio performer was terrific as well. She brought the book to life.
