I liked the protagonist. It will be interesting to see his development.
Revisado: 03-10-24
Last third of the story was entertaining. The first 2/3rds of the book was mostly boring background and monologue/dialogue. It was a pain and I almost moved on. But stuck it out to the end and was glad that I did.
Prepared to be bored overlong and then entertained.

Historia
How do you kill a Saint? Falcio, Kest, and Brasti are about to find out, because someone has figured out a way to do it and they've started with a friend. The Dukes were already looking for ways out of their agreement to put Aline on the throne, but with the Saints turning up dead, rumors are spreading that the Gods themselves oppose her ascension. Now churches are looking to protect themselves by bringing back the military orders of religious soldiers, assassins, and (especially) Inquisitors - a move that could turn the country into a theocracy.

A hard listen for me
Revisado: 10-19-23
Sorry, but for me, it was an all around eye-roller. Be prepared for something, very, VERY emotional! The main romantic relationship is just the most complex hopeless, frustrating mess that I have ever read, and I have read or listened to countless novels of every genre. There is no limit to the excessive descriptions of emotions and intense feelings. It just goes on and on. .. and on. Drove me to distraction.
The plot was actually fairly creative and interesting. The author has an amazing imagination. If you love a very different kind of hero - extremely emotionally complex and perpetually conflicted, this might be for you.
Also, the narrator was very talented. But overall, this effort was not to my taste - not even close.

Historia
Wolf of the North: It has been generations since the Northlands have seen a hero worthy of the title. Many have made the claim, but few have lived to defend it. Timid, weak, and bullied, Wulfric is as unlikely a candidate as there could be. Jorundyr's Path: Jorundyr's Path is walked only by the brave. As Wulfric pursues Adalhaid's Blood Debt, he soon learns that the path to revenge is never easy. The Blood Debt: A blade fit for a hero. An army for a tyrant. A reckoning long awaited, and a tale reaching its end.

Terrible ending
Revisado: 05-29-23
Epic journey, great adventure, with an epic-fail ending. Took a very long time to be majorly disappointed. At least it was entertaining throughout with the exception of a too-quick and very unsatisfying ending!

Little story, much description, overblown inner emotional turmoil
Revisado: 04-11-23
Zanie Grey - wanderer of the wastelands Don’t even bother. I enjoy good description, but Grey goes absolutely bonkers with over-description. Unbelievable! Short, but good story, in a long, long book! A reasonably good story becomes lost in the ridiculously lengthy, femininly flowery descriptions of the south western desert country. He doesn’t seem to have a clue that he is grossly over- doing it! I’ve read other Zane Grey books before, and basically enjoyed them. But this one was horrendously over-descriptive - truly, like nothing I’ve ever read before, and certainly not in the western genre.

Historia
For 24 winters, the blond child had been held captive by the Indians. Now rangy, raw-boned Ben Allison set out to heat up a stone-cold trail and bring Amy Johnston home. He was armed with only an old mountain man's map, a cheap gold locket, an ornery pack mule, and his army Colt. It was an impossible mission leading straight into hostile Indian country. Ben was keenly aware that the search for Amy could very well be his own death hunt.

Clay Fisher/Will Henry - best of the best
Revisado: 04-11-22
Wonderful story line. The book had the usual easy sense of western humor that is characteristic of this author - nothing contrived - best humor I’ve ever seen/heard in a book, western or otherwise. With my earbuds in, I would at times bust into laughter before knowing if anyone was around. Narrator did a great job with native accented English - very authentic/believable.

Good yarn - character flaw
Revisado: 09-25-19
I really like the main character, Beobrand. He is very brave, basically good and honorable when times were terribly brutal. He is skillful and creative in battle and has empathy for the oppressed - making him an appealing hero to me. The problem I have with Beobrand’s character is that the author repeatedly takes Him back into a depressive state of self-recrimination and moral self doubt. You can almost envision him repeatedly curling up into the fetal position - which doesn’t jive well with the rest of his character. Even when the events going wrong contain elements he is powerless to do anything about he continually blames himself. The author dips into that well too frequently, in my opinion. It gets old. Fortunately the excellent storyline saves the story from this flaw in the hero’s characterization. I usually can’t wait to hear what comes next!

A good story with some glaring flaws
Revisado: 09-20-18
Books, in my opinion, are about telling a good story. It will always be so. This was a good story. Having said that, there are a few things really bugged me about this particular audio book. The the author chooses to deliver his story line via a prolonged conversation that the protagonist, David, has with himself. That isn’t my issue though. My issue is that in that long conversation with himself, the “hero” sounds like a recently post pubescent teenage geek. His self-talk is filled with quick sarcasm regarding just about everything. It’s clever sometimes but way overdone for my taste - it just never ends! He is also consumed with insecurities, self-doubt, and guilt. It simply does not ring true with the heroic exploits that he performs throughout the story. It’s like Ferris Bueller inhabits the body of “Bond, James Bond”! It does not work well in my opinion. I think the plot is creative and intriguing but a successful conclusion to the plot requires extremely long odds. The unlikely character make-up of the hero, David, renders the plot that much less believable. Added to that is the voice the narrator gives David. The narrator himself is obviously a gifted actor and has some great voice characterizations for the other characters in the book. Even his Russian accents and female characterizations are terrific! But he makes David sound much more like an uncertain middle school boy than an experienced/expert pilot, genius, astronaut, action hero which his exploits in the book show him to be. It was a wrong choice of vocal characterizations.
One other thing bugged me. Sometimes the cursing in David’s self-conversation was so coarse and overdone. If the reader begins the book unfamiliar with Jesus Christ, they certainly will be familiar with the name by book’s end. Some people don’t care about that and some do, so if you do care (like me), reader beware. There were a few times I was sickened by the profanity. Mind you, I was draw in by a good yarn and did not want to give up on it, but that appendage to David’s character certainly was gratuitous and all to often detracted from the overall story.
