Historia
The discovery of a dead infant in an Amish barn shakes Lancaster County to its core. But the police investigation leads to a more shocking disclosure: Circumstantial evidence suggests that 18-year-old Katie Fisher, an unmarried Amish woman believed to be the newborn's mother, took the child's life. When Ellie Hathaway, a disillusioned big-city attorney, comes to Paradise, Pennsylvania, to defend Katie, two cultures collide - and for the first time in her high-profile career, Ellie faces a system of justice very different from her own.

Historia
Washington, DC, 1950. Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House, a down-at-the-heels all-female boardinghouse in the heart of the nation’s capital where secrets hide behind white picket fences. But when the lovely, mysterious widow Grace March moves into the attic room, she draws her oddball collection of neighbors into unlikely friendship. Grace’s weekly attic-room dinner parties and window-brewed sun tea become a healing balm on all their lives, but she hides a terrible secret of her own.

Got better towards the end
Revisado: 10-01-24
I liked the overall story and historical references but some of the biographies of the characters got a bit long and I did some skipping during them. What was quite irritating were the verbal recipes given throughout the book. They should have been in a separate pdf if the author wanted the reader to learn of all the ingredients in the various recipes. Even if the reader were interested in the recipes how could you make use of them hearing them read aloud?
Great twist at the end.

Enjoyed this book as much as every Jodie Piccoult I’ve read. I was pleasantly surprised that Audible offered it for free. I would highly recommend it.

Historia
When ballet dancer Clara Campbell arrives in New Orleans, lonely and homesick, she is immediately captivated by the story of Windisle Plantation and the tragic tale that is said to have transpired beyond its gate. Legend has it that it is abandoned by all living souls, but to Clara’s great surprise, it is not a ghost she hears through the stone wall surrounding the property, but a flesh and blood man: a scarred stranger with a pain deeper and darker than the churning waters of the Mississippi river that flows beside his self-imposed prison.

Historia
Daisy McCrae's life is in tatters. She's lost her job, broken up with her boyfriend, and has been reduced to living in the attic above her family's store, the Union Street Bakery, while learning the business. Making things worse is the constant feeling of not being a "real" McCrae, since she was adopted as a child and has a less-than-perfect relationship with her two sisters. Then a long-standing elderly customer passes away, and for some reason she bequeaths to Daisy a journal dating back to the 1850s...

Difficult to get through
Revisado: 03-25-24
The graphic descriptions of the blood and gore of the soldiers Franky treated as a nurse in Vietnam was difficult to read and similar gruesome scenes were repeated more than was necessary. A few aspects of the storyline after Franky came home were also difficult to read like her taking so long to get psychological help despite such disturbing nightmares and despite dating a psychiatrist who merely hinted that she might benefit from psychotherapy. Being turned down for help by the VA twice should have led her to seeking help elsewhere instead of running to her girlfriends who also could have suggested it.
All that said it was an important book and I have no regrets reading it.

Beautiful well told story
Revisado: 03-16-24
I enjoyed this story from start to finish. The writing was excellent and the storyline was a wonderful mix of history, great characters, and the brutal realities of racism and prejudices of many of these characters. There’s many lessons interwoven into the story but the Buddhist lesson that in life we should “go as a river” is the overriding lesson of all.

Boring and contrived
Revisado: 02-05-24
The only thing I liked about this dull and boring book was the narration by Meryl Streep. I wouldn’t have finished it except for it being selected by my bookclub. It’s a mystery to me why so many people liked it. Perhaps it relates to the author’s other books being so much better.

Historia
The Vengeance of Mothers is an audiobook that explores what happens to the bonds between wives and husbands, children and mothers, when society sees them as "unspeakable." What does it mean to be white, to be Cheyenne, and how far will these women go to avenge the ones they love? As he did in One Thousand White Women, Jim Fergus brings to light a time and place in American history, and fills it with unforgettable characters who live and breathe with a passion we can relate to even today.
