Historia
In Indigenous Continent, acclaimed historian Pekka Hämäläinen presents a sweeping counternarrative that shatters the most basic assumptions about American history. Shifting our perspective away from Jamestown, Plymouth Rock, the Revolution, and other well-trodden episodes on the conventional timeline, he depicts a sovereign world of Native nations whose members, far from helpless victims of colonial violence, dominated the continent for centuries after the first European arrivals.

Understanding the History
Revisado: 05-12-24
Absolutely the most comprehensive book I have ever read on the settling of the US. Exhaustively researched and presented in significant detail it is a strong telling of the 400 year interaction of the indigenous people and the arriving European Dutch, English, French and Spanish settlers. Hamalainen explains the reasoning and expectations of each of these nations allowing for a greater understanding of their initial interaction and the challenges faced by the existing local population. A must read.

Historia
Populist rage, ideological fracture, economic and technological shocks, geopolitical dangers, and an international system studded with catastrophic risk—the early decades of the 21st century may be one of the most revolutionary periods in modern history. But they are not the first. Humans have lived, and thrived, through more than one great realignment. What makes an age a revolutionary one? And how do they end?

Historia
In 2007, the Center for Automation in Nanobiotech (CAN) outlined the hardware and software platforms that would one day allow robots smaller than human cells to make medical diagnoses, conduct repairs, and even self-propagate. In the same year, the CBS network re-aired a program about the effects of propranolol on sufferers of extreme trauma. A simple pill, it had been discovered, could wipe out the memory of any traumatic event. At almost the same moment in humanity’s broad history, mankind discovered the means for bringing about its utter downfall. And the ability to forget it ever happened.

Who, How and…Why
Revisado: 08-06-23
Shift is the who, how, and why to Wool. Throughout you catch yourself in moments of understanding of actions, words, or meanings written into Wool. I found myself seeking to know more with each chapter. Chapters are short and pull you to read the following. Some chapters drag a bit and could have been edited out, but overall an excellent read and set-up to Dust.

Historia
For generations, everything has been getting faster, better, and cheaper. Finally, we reached the point that almost anything you could ever want could be sent to your home within days - even hours - of when you decided you wanted it. America made that happen, but now America has lost interest in keeping it going.

Worth 6 stars!
Revisado: 07-28-22
The last book that I read that hit me so significantly was Harari's Sapiens. It's a must if you want a strong comparative understanding of what can potentially happen as globalization's demise and a changing population and climate takes effect. It's not political, so don't worry about trying to defend climate change, one way or the other. Personally, having read innumerable books on past civilizations, it reconfirms that climate changes have an effect on civilizations period. I think of the America Soutwest and the great civilizations of the Indus valley. Who is responsible for the change is not the debate here. What the Zeihan shares is the geoeconomic effect on major elements of survival - population, natural resources, agriculture. and manufacturing. The book is a must read and frankly highlights the very positive position North America is in....especially appreciated in today's Doomsday environment. For the record, I listened to the audio version, which is narrated by Zeihan. His passion, enthusiasm, and knowledge of the subject clears is evident. I buy books in both print and audio format - here I recommend the audio.

Or The Importance of Respect
Revisado: 07-25-22
Time well spent. This is an excellent overview of China’s near history especially the post WWII civil war era through the 2008 Olympics. The last two chapters are very enlightening given the actions on both sides over the last 12+ years.
Prof. Baum’s enthusiasm and passion for the subject comes across from beginning ‘til end. I only wish he was still alive to provide us a sequel.

Historia
In Wolves Eat Dogs, beloved detective Arkady Renko enters the privileged world of Russia's new billionaire class. The grandest of them all, a self-made powerhouse named Pasha Ivanov, has apparently leapt to his death from the palatial splendor of his ultra-modern Moscow condominium. While there are no signs pointing to homicide, there is one troubling and puzzling bit of evidence: in Ivanov's bedroom closet, there's a mountain of salt.

Another good investigator Renko story, 20 years after the Chernobyl disaster. Strozier’s narration is spectacular, adjusting his voice and accent for the many different character. This was the first Renko book I listened too versus physically read. Not seeing the printed names, it took me a little time to distinguish and separate the characters.

Historia
In this landmark work, one of the world's most renowned Egyptologists tells the epic story of this great civilization, from its birth as the first nation-state to its final absorption into the Roman Empire - 3,000 years of wild drama, bold spectacle, and unforgettable characters. Award-winning scholar Toby Wilkinson captures not only the lavish pomp and artistic grandeur of this land of pyramids and pharaohs but for the first time reveals the constant propaganda and repression that were its foundations.

A comprehensive study of Egyptian history, almost textbookish in style. After listening, I would recommend a kindle or book format. The complexity of the names and places would have been easier to distinguish visually.

A work that requires multiple reads and plenty of reflection. For a true appreciation of the book, I believe one should participate in a discussion group to gain a broader interpretation and challenging viewpoints. The world of AI is upon us, the question is how far and how fast.
