Historia
Nobody needs telling there isn’t enough time. We’re obsessed with our lengthening to-do lists, our overfilled inboxes, work-life balance, and the ceaseless battle against distraction; and we’re deluged with advice on becoming more productive and efficient, and “life hacks” to optimize our days. But such techniques often end up making things worse. The sense of anxious hurry grows more intense, and still the most meaningful parts of life seem to lie just beyond the horizon.

There is no "why"
Revisado: 11-13-24
The author seemingly has no reason to live except for merely existing so he finds futility in trying to accomplish anything and the best he can come up with is essentially "give up on doing anything and you may accomplish.... something." IF you you want to despair and give up hope of finding any purpose in life, I highly recommend this book.

Historia
Just as Job was tried, all of us are tested by suffering. It comes to us in many different forms: grief about the past, pain in the present, and sadness about what might have been. The personal dimension of suffering means that it marks our experience and, in some ways, makes us who we are. Coping with suffering as Christians includes certain spiritual practices that lead us to surrender our lives more fully to the Lord.

Under the leadership of her fearless skipper, Captain Gene Fluckey, the Barb sank the greatest tonnage of any American sub in World War II. At the same time, the Barb did far more than merely sink ships-she changed forever the way submarines stalk and kill their prey.
This is a gripping adventure chock-full of "you-are-there" moments. Fluckey has drawn on logs, reports, letters, interviews, and a recently discovered illegal diary kept by one of his torpedomen.

Historia
The book draws its inspiration from stoicism, the ancient Greek philosophy of enduring pain or adversity with perseverance and resilience. Stoics focus on the things they can control, let go of everything else, and turn every new obstacle into an opportunity to get better, stronger, tougher. As Marcus Aurelius put it nearly 2000 years ago: “The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.”

Simplistic
Revisado: 08-04-23
There is a lot that can be gained by embracing challenges and pushing through hard barriers but asking why the obstacles are there and why it is important to push through simply isn't addressed. There are times & places to quit something unproductive and try something new.
The "simply push through" and saying challenges are always good really breaks down in relationships and especially when compassion and acknowledging loss comes in. Having a friend's parent dying and saying "good thing they died - you'll be better for it" is tone deaf and simply shuts down emotion and grieving.
The book has some good examples of perseverance but take it at a macro level and with a LOT of nuance that isn't included.

There is a war on masculinity, and everywhere we look—on every front we hold sacred—we can see the painful reminders of this collapsing order. The chaos and crisis we are experiencing today should be a signal for men everywhere to rise up; to fight to preserve our way of life by once again walking the ancient paths. But this isn’t a journey that need be taken alone.

Unfortunately Necessary
Revisado: 10-13-22
If everyone in the Marine Corps and our political leadership did the right thing, Scheller would never have had to say what he did but the visceral reaction to it witnessed how important what he said was. The fact that so few attacks are directed at the content of his comments speaks volumes for their accuracy.
Beyond agreeing at a high level with what he said, the book is well written and documents clearly what can be easily found outside of this book to verify facts while providing his motivation and goals behind his actions. Agreeing with his statements or how he said them isn't necessary for reading this book - rather, I'd specifically encourage those who disagree to hear him out and start to ask hard questions from those who lead us.

Historia
On September 11, 2018, Navy SEAL Chief Edward Gallagher - a highly-decorated combat veteran with nine deployments to war zones in Africa, Afghanistan, and Iraq - was arrested for war crimes at the TBI medical clinic where he was receiving treatment. His incarceration was the culmination of a year-long whisper campaign started by a group of disgruntled members of his SEAL platoon. While heavily covered in the media, the full story of how a war hero was railroaded and nearly sent to prison for life for crimes he didn't commit has never been told.
