Historia
This classic novel and winner of the Pulitzer Prize tells the story of an Italian-American major in World War II who wins the love and admiration of the local townspeople when he searches for a replacement for the 700-year-old town bell that had been melted down for bullets by the fascists. Although stituated during one of the most devastating experiences in human history, John Hersey's story speaks with unflinching patriotism and humanity.

A sentimental story of war and a case study in leadership
Revisado: 03-06-25
Though the book has its goofy moments, with some of the Italian characters being more caricature than character, it is an excellent and easy book to read. It is the answer to the question of "What must one do to lead a people and become beloved by them." Along the way it includes wonderful color of the people and activities of a small Sicilian town liberated by the Americans from fascist control in WWII, undercurrents of romance and a seasoning of satire on the subject of bad military leadership as well as the aforementioned case study in good leadership, military or otherwise.
The book is also clear that western-style democracy is a far superior form of government to fascism, from its philosophical foundation to the people themselves who carry out these forms of government.
This book was also ably and, when necessary, humorously read.
Overall, I would recommend it to anyone curious about what it might have been like to help Italy recover from fascism or anyone looking to understand how to lead a mission, which at it's most fundamental level is about leading and caring for people.

Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

Outstanding performances, A+ story
Revisado: 02-03-25
I'm sure other reviewers have made a more complete and compelling case, so I'll be brief. If you were curious about this book because you enjoyed the recent Dune films, just buy it and dive in. The story is even fuller and the reading is totally engaging from start to finish. Background sound effects rounded out the complete immersion in the story, making for an audiobook that will pain you to pause.

Historia
The tales of The Silmarillion are set in an age when Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, dwelt in Middle-earth, and the High Elves made war upon him for the recovery of the Silmarils, the jewels containing the pure light of Valinor. Included on the recording are several shorter works. The Ainulindalë is a myth of the Creation and in the Valaquenta the nature and powers of each of the gods is described. The Akallabêth recounts the downfall of the great island kingdom of Númenor at the end of the Second Age, and Of the Rings of Power tells of the great events at the end of the Third Age.

Epic stories, outstanding narrator
Revisado: 01-02-25
For fans of mythology and the Lord of the Rings trilogy, this is a must-read / must-listen.
The writing style is admittedly dense as this is more a series of mythological stories than one long narrative (though it is ultimately that too). But Andy Serkis (who portrays Gollum in the Peter Jackson LOTR films) does as good a job as is possible to bring the characters, settings and stories to life, a difficult task given the writing style and the frequent name changes to characters and places.
For the patient listener, you will hear about epic battles and incredible acts of herosim alongside events of immeasurable tragedy.
I would recommend reading the LOTR trilogy first as a foundation (also excellently narrated by Andy Serkis).
Overall, the Silmarillion is a very rewarding experience for Tolkienites, though it would be a bit more difficult for the casual reader to get into.
On a directly personal note: I tried reading the text and found the audiobook much easier to engage with. So if you struggled to follow and stick with the text, give this a shot. I also benefitted from pausing and reading about certain characters and events online to help me keep my bearings.
