ECR Lorac was a largely forgotten author from the Golden Age until the British Library began reissuing her books. This one is another wonderful story; fairly easy to guess the villian, but the characters and setting are terrific. David Thorpe does a great job with the storytelling. Hoping more of her book are reissued and recorded.

Fun double golden age mystery. Both feature unusual murders; a cast of colorful characters. Both enjoyable but give a slight edge to Death Knows No Calendar in which the adventures of the amateur sleuth Major Boddy & his batman now valet Syd Gammon who detect using the techniques learned from reading detective fiction. Quite a pair and they are far from buffoons.

Ngaio Marsh is one of my favorite Golden Age writers and one of the Queens of the period. This one is not from the Golden Age, but one of her later works. Still terrific. While the puzzle is not terribly complex; the characters; esp. Aunt Bed & Uncle Flea and an assortment of one off murderers who comprise the household staff make for an entertaining story. James Saxon could read the yellow pages and make them interesting. SPOILER: always a bonus when the most annoying character is the killer.

There is a reason this is one of her best known stories. No spoilers; one that knowing the ending does not hurt the story one bit. David Suchet (best Poirot ever) does the narration well except for the godawful Colonel Race who sounds as if he belongs in music hall comedy rather than a mystery. The actual story gives so much more depth than if you simply watch the film and makes it much richer & more complex.

Ngaio Marsh had a gift for characters; sometimes they were too talky which slowed down the story; but for the most part the talking was where the clues were. James Saxon is hands down the best Marsh narrator (with Philip Franks a close second).

This would have been a 4 star; the characters are fun; the plot just puzzling enough to not reveal itself in first 3 chapters but....the narrator decided that half the characters in rural New England should sound like they were from the deep south instead. If you can find this story with a better reader or simply read the print edition you will enjoy it.

Was excited to see Charlotte MacLeod books in catalog. The Peter Shandy mysteries are a lot of fun and good puzzles to boot. Def. recommend for a fun read any time of the year.

Have only recently come across the forgotten writer ECR Lorac. Very glad I did. Her stories are full of depth and usually present a tangle that is not easily undone by either her fictional detective or the reader. This is the 3rd one I've tried; but will be seeking out more of her work.

Christianna Brand; while not one of the better known golden age writers has a style of wit and just enough twists to make a great plot. And her Inspector Cockrill is a character. Alastair Sim played the role in the movie of another Brand novel; Green for Danger and he was the perfect choice. Every time I read a Brand now I see Sim as Cocky.

Josephine Tey does a terrific job with characters and plot. I wish she had written more mysteries. And Karen Cass is the perfect narrator for her stories.
