The Last Horizon has already sown new legends across the galaxy, tales of monsters defeated and worlds saved. For better and for worse, their reputation is spreading. Their enemies have taken notice. Really enjoyed
Revisado: 01-02-24
I really enjoyed this take on time travel and timelines. The characters felt like real people with real struggles and personality flaws - not epic mystical people who handle everything flawlessly. I enjoyed the narrators performance as well.

Historia
Simon O'Keeffe's biggest claim to fame should be the time his dad accidentally gave a squirrel a holy sacrament. Or maybe the alpaca disaster that went viral on YouTube. But the story the whole world wants to tell about Simon is the one he'd do anything to forget: the story in which he's the only kid in his class who survived a school shooting. Two years after the infamous event, twelve-year-old Simon and his family move to the National Quiet Zone—the only place in America where the internet is banned.

Sweet and heartbreaking
Revisado: 05-28-23
Say what you like about trigger warnings, but as a parent of school aged children, I could have used one - so I will put one at the bottom. Don’t read if you don’t want spoilers!
This book captured the nuances of grief and hope and life and friendship so beautifully. The narration was nicely done, and added so much emotion. While I think this is technically a young adult book, I think it’s very important for adults to read - to remember that giving privacy IS giving support, and that support looks more like laying under the bed with someone, and less like hanging ribbons of remembrance in public. Overall, I highly recommend this book, but it is heart wrenching!

Start with the other one…

I really enjoy this series, and have read the six books (listened to them?) a few times now. I would recommend listening to Of Sea and Shadow before this book. I think that one does better in world building and giving a real feeing to the book series overall. This book makes a lot more sense when you already know some of the main characters and have an understanding of reading and intent. I know that going back and forth between time periods and perspectives isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I really enjoy putting the puzzle together throughout the series. I also really, really enjoy (as in all Will Wight’s series) that there is no “she’s strong…for a woman” or any mention of gender related to power or strength or standing. All women in his series stand on their own with no mention of gender in relation to their abilities. It’s so refreshing!

Historia
Calder has been declared Imperial Steward, the official successor to the Emperor. He leads the Empire from the throne, just as he has always wanted. In their tombs, the Great Elders stir. The crack in the sky becomes more alarming by the day, so Calder and his loyal Imperialist Guilds seek a truce with their Independent opponents. Both sides know the Elders are the true enemy, but that does not make peace easy. Blood has been spilled already, trust is hard to come by, and the Guild Heads under Calder see him as little more than a figurehead.

Satisfying ending
Revisado: 01-08-23
I’ve read this series a few times now, and I prefer to end on this one, rather than Of Killers and Kings, because it has such a satisfying ending to the series. I absolutely love the final perspective. (And the boat name makes me teary each time.) I really enjoy the back and forth nature of the books, and seeing sides from all angles. I’m sure this series will remain in rotation for many years to come!
