Historia
Sheriff Harry Moran has a broken heart and a stack of case files on his desk that the corrupt sheriff who came before him might have bungled. Or he may have framed innocent people. The first case Harry dives into, the woman left behind lives just a block away from his office. When Lillian Rainier opens the door to the sheriff, Harry, who’s been a dead man walking since his wife died, comes back to life. As for Lillian, she’s had a crush on Harry for forever, Harry showing at her door, and how he is when he does only makes her fall deeper.

Lots of action and yet boring
Revisado: 07-28-25
Its weird how much detail KA goes into in her books. It's not always necessary. Her details are too mundane and that makes much of the book boring. This story is just okay. I was glad when it was over. Three stars.

Historia
After the Battle of Waterloo, Eli Dawes was presumed dead - and would have happily stayed that way. Rose Hayward remembers Eli as the arrogant lord who helped her late fiancé betray her. Finding him stealing into her art studio doesn't correct her impression. Her only thought is to get him to leave immediately. Yet the tension between them is electric, and she can't help but be drawn to him. He might be back from the dead, but it's Rose who is suddenly feeling very, very much alive.

Great series.
Revisado: 07-26-25
I read this series out of order and it was fine. Kelly Bowen is a great writer - easy to read, interesting plot, intelligent dialog. All of the MFCs in this series are smart and well educated for the time setting of the early 1800s - bluestockings and wallflowers as they are considered too smart. The MMCs all find these women incredible, beautiful, and irresistible. This book, IMO, was not as good as the others in the series. And because this is a series (which I try to avoid because, yawn), the books become formulaic. This is the very reason I dislike series romances. The first book is generally good, but with each subsequent book I gain less and less enjoyment. For that reason, I'm giving three stars.

A new favorite author!
Revisado: 07-24-25
I enjoyed this series. Kelly Bowen can write, and she does it without falling back onto basic romance novel tropes. This book has interesting and intelligent dialog. The MFC is self actualized. She understands her capabilities and her worth, even though this story is set in the early 1800s (which is the only disconnect in this book). I enjoyed the storyline very much. The MMC has been thru too much in his life and has risen to be a Duke and a successful and often ruthless businessman. These two people find each other and the relationship blossoms. I would very much like these people in real life. Easy five stars. Wonderful listen; great story.

Catherine and Harlan - two doctors and smugglers who meet and fall for each other. I loved that these two characters each took a chance. Scared as they each were by past pain and rejections, they bravely took a chance to make a connection. Slow burn. Intelligent dialog. A fresh and interesting plot line with interesting characters. A solid, interesting story of smuggling and strategizing ways to outwit the soldiers, as well as other smugglers. Includes a sweet HEA. Loved it.

These series military books always lack a little something. I enjoyed the plot of this book but I experienced too many eye-roll moments. I get tired of trite and predictable dialog and characters that continuously second guess themselves. The best part was the short action sequence toward the end of the book! Can't give this book more than three stars.

Couldn't finish
Revisado: 07-17-25
For me, this book is just too slow. I wanted to like this book more as the plot had such potential, but I just couldn't get past the back and forth. The narrator didn't change her voices and it took too much time to figure out who was talking, thinking, or writing. Maybe in written format it would be easier.

Aurora De La Torre, or Ora to her friends, knows moving back to Pagosa Springs, Colorado, a place that was once home and is now full of bittersweet memories of her late mother, isn’t going to be easy. Starting your whole life over probably isn’t supposed to be. But after breaking up with her longtime famous musician boyfriend, hiding out in a small town in the mountains might be the perfect remedy for a broken heart. And checking out her landlord who lives across the driveway just might cure it, too. Only Tobias Rhodes didn’t rent out the apartment to her, rather it was his teenage son, Amos.

This book is beautifully complex and written very well. I enjoyed every moment of this listen and, if I missed a portion, I backtracked to hear every word. The MCs were interesting and people I would want to know in real life. Five stars.

Meh.
Revisado: 07-12-25
MFC is Mara Brent, book #7.
MMC, Mara's boyfriend, is sheriff. Somewhat slow. I didn't know public attorneys could investigate crimes. Interesting twist at the end that was unanticipated. Not really my thing, so I probably won't read any more books from this series.

Unexpected and profound.
Revisado: 07-11-25
Not what I expected. Mr. Rainwater comes to town and life becomes real for Ella Baron. Slowly this story unfolds to reveal the town and the boarding house and it's occupants. The MFC, Ella, is strong but shut off from life as she faces her challenges. The MMC we learn has his own challenges. The historical elements of the great depression and racial disparity are the backdrop and provide plenty of tension in the plot. This is a story of profound love story and self sacrifice. Great ending.
