Historia
On July 12th, 1776, Captain James Cook, already lionized as the greatest explorer in British history, set off on his third voyage in his ship the HMS Resolution. Two-and-a-half years later, on a beach on the island of Hawaii, Cook was killed in a conflict with native Hawaiians. How did Cook, who was unique among captains for his respect for Indigenous peoples and cultures, come to that fatal moment? Hampton Sides’ bravura account of Cook’s last journey both wrestles with Cook’s legacy and provides a thrilling narrative of the titanic efforts and continual danger that characterized exploration.

The right length and narrator for a true and thrilling voyage. I have snorkeled near the sight of Cook’s death and this book/ audio gave a clear account of all the encounters up to this tragic event. Amazing!

The narrator is good as well as famous
Revisado: 03-18-25
Ann Patchett’s style is not easy to get into for some reason. I enjoyed the story once I got through the beginning with Our Town the play and finding out the narrator wanted to be a part of the play. I enjoyed the narrator for her subtle voice changes and engaging cadence.

Historia
In the 1970s, the ultimate trip for any backpacker was the storied “Hippie Trail” from Istanbul to Kathmandu. A 23-year old Rick Steves made the trek, and like a travel writer in training, he documented everything along the way: jumping off a moving train, making friends in Tehran, getting lost in Lahore, getting high for the first time in Herat, battling leeches in Pokhara, and much more. The experience ignited his love of travel and forever broadened his perspective on the world.

Honest and real enthusiasm as always
Revisado: 03-16-25
I am a Rick Steves fan and this was the start of his travel life in a new challenge with his friend Gene. He honestly tells us about their many good and difficult moments including getting sick many times. Rick still loved the journey and helped me to enjoy it too. Thanks Rick!!

Difficult to know when story shifts from the past to present. Narrator does not change voices well. Overall story interesting but not compelling for its length.

Vera Wong is a lonely little old lady—ah, lady of a certain age—who lives above her forgotten tea shop in the middle of San Francisco’s Chinatown. Despite living alone, Vera is not needy, oh no. She likes nothing more than sipping on a good cup of Wulong and doing some healthy detective work on the Internet about what her Gen-Z son is up to. Then one morning, Vera trudges downstairs to find a curious thing—a dead man in the middle of her tea shop.

Narrator is excellent and story amusing
Revisado: 01-06-25
I wonder if the cast of characters would really think that Vera is a sweet old lady in reality? She was so bossy to everyone. I loved her sincerity but her constant instruction was hard to take. She had other redeeming qualities like her tasty food to draw in the young people.
At one point half way in I wondered if this book was meant to be a Young Adult Novel because the focus was on the four young characters more.
I did not see the case solved ahead of time since not all characters were revealed enough to guess.

How much do you know about the Etruscans? Many people, even those who are fascinated by ancient history, are less familiar with this intriguing culture than with the history of Greece and Rome - but the story of the Etruscans is equally captivating and far more important than you may have known. This ancient civilization prospered in the region of modern-day Tuscany, maintaining extensive trade networks, building impressive fortified cities, making exquisite art, and creating a culture that, while deeply connected to the Greeks and Romans, had striking contrasts.
