Because I couldn't wait for Season 2
Revisado: 08-22-19
I read this after I watched HBO's My Brilliant Friend season 1 based on the previous book in the series, and I loved it. The narrator is wonderful and the story is captivating. It helped having a visual for the characters from the show, and a basis for their personalities as interpreted on the show. Elena Ferrante is a true artist and an incredible writer.

Historia
The relentless pursuit of high self-esteem has become a virtual religion - and a tyrannical one at that. Our ultracompetitive culture tells us we need to be constantly above average to feel good about ourselves, but there is always someone more attractive, successful, or intelligent than we are. And even when we do manage to grab hold of high self-esteem for a brief moment, we can't seem to keep it. Our sense of self-worth goes up and down like a ping-pong ball, rising and falling in lockstep with our latest success or failure.

great book, narrator different
Revisado: 07-01-19
Another time I want to buy the book after listening to it on audible so I can annotate and reference it more. great ideas. first half better than second half, but not repetitive. I don't know why, but the narrator's expression irritated me. I would alter it in my head to my own liking to sound less...suave?

Historia
The tipping point is that magic moment when an idea, trend, or social behavior crosses a threshold, tips, and spreads like wildfire. Just as a single sick person can start an epidemic of the flu, so too can a small but precisely targeted push cause a fashion trend, the popularity of a new product, or a drop in the crime rate. This widely acclaimed bestseller, in which Malcolm Gladwell explores and brilliantly illuminates the tipping point phenomenon, is already changing the way people throughout the world think about selling products and disseminating ideas.

Perfect Mexican daughters do not go away to college. And they do not move out of their parents' house after high school graduation. Perfect Mexican daughters never abandon their family. But Julia is not your perfect Mexican daughter. That was Olga's role. Then a tragic accident on the busiest street in Chicago leaves Olga dead and Julia left behind to reassemble the shattered pieces of her family. And no one seems to acknowledge that Julia is broken, too. Instead, her mother seems to channel her grief into pointing out every possible way Julia has failed.

Wonderful!
Revisado: 10-15-18
I probably especially enjoyed this as a teacher of Latina teens. I keep asking my students to read it so I can talk about it with them. I think it's really motivating and relatable to teen readers, but still good writing. The narrator was excellent! Sometimes her Mexican accents sounded Indian (surprisingly), but she really sounded just like my students in her teen voice.

Historia
When a group of neighborhood women gathers, wine in hand, around a fire pit where their backyards meet one Saturday night, most of them are just ecstatic to have discovered that their baby monitors reach that far. It's a rare kid-free night, and they're giddy with it. They drink too much, and the conversation turns personal. By Monday morning, one of them is gone. Everyone knows something about everyone else in the quirky small Ohio town of Yellow Springs, but no one can make sense of the disappearance.

not as good as (or comparable to) gone girl

waited the whole book for it to get good. at the very end it did, but it still took too long. all character development, which was good, but I was hoping for more of a thriller. also the narrator's voices for men and children are annoying.

Historia
In this stunning audiobook, Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of "outliers" - the best and the brightest, the most famous, and the most successful. He asks the question: What makes high-achievers different? His answer is that we pay too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where they are from: That is, their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing.

very relatable and validating to a sassy bubbly b**** like me. her narration and attitude was flatter than expected. I imagined her voice more animated and expressive when reading the paper book to myself silently. still bookmarked a ton of her thoughts.
