I'm surprised Phil Gigante performances are still available. I didn't notice when I downloaded this book, but as soon as I heard that name, I stopped and removed the book from my library.

These are two whiny, barely likable characters. They have no impulse control, they lack maturity, they have abysmal relationship skills, and they seem unable to cope with tragic circumstances that sometimes happen in life. These characteristics make it difficult for the author to sell them as being the kind of people who could attain the business and military accomplishments we readers are expected to believe.

Upon discovering this to be the author's first book, maybe I can soften the hard criticism I had planned to unleash. However, this was an eye-roller, to be sure. I'm not sure I'm interested enough in the outcome of the story to endure the second book.

Couldn't enjoy the narration

The narration caused me to view the characters as irredeemably shallow and immature. It was distracting, and I wasn't having fun.

I'll just read this one myself.

Update: I've finished reading the book, sans narration, and I have to give it 4 stars at least. No, it gets 5. It has a great message. I loved the story. Nerds can be bullies, too. Considering the current national conversation surrounding politics and everything else, It's time we learned that we ALL are capable of fears, insecurities, tender feelings, and unrequited love, regardless of whatever category you think defines you. This book delivers a very timely message disguised under a lighthearted veneer. No matter how mistreated you think you have been, it's never okay to act out in revenge against those who have hurt you, and especially those who you think are "like" the ones that hurt you. The ensuing destruction affects the world around you, drags others into the pain, and spreads exponentially. The answer is to stop viewing the "other" as evil, an enemy, and care about them instead. Listen to them. Try to understand them. Give them credit for being real people, with real feelings and a point of view that is worthwhile even if you don't understand it. What a great message from this book.

Narrator thinks she is reading to children...

The narration, for me, can make or break a book. In the case of this book, the narrator has some skill. Her attempts at accents are okay. I'm from the South, and I'm used to hackneyed attempts at our various regional accents. I'm usually pretty forgiving if they at least don't try to make us sound stupid. Her male voices are okay. The men sound a bit wimpy, but it's passable.

But it's this narrator's intonation that drives me nuts. Her voice conjures the idea of a grandma or librarian reading a tale of adventure to young children. All wonderment and bright-eyed enthusiasm, this voice, and such a poor match for the subject matter.

The narration was a hindrance to my enjoyment of this book. I actually requested a refund, but then I repurchased it because I didn't have time to sit still with the ebook version. I guess that's a point in favor of the plot - I wanted to see how it turned out. As far as the book itself, I give it 3 stars because it's an enjoyable story. I'm stingy with 5-stars (those only go to GREAT LITERATURE, surely), and 4-stars are for stories that really move and/or impress me, but aren't necessarily the pinnacle of literary accomplishment. So 3 stars from me is a solid good story and worth reading. But the narration, though! Gosh, it was a trial, this one. Nearly ruins it.

Annoying protagonist

The protagonist is so annoying that I've decided not to continue with the series. If you are actually competent, capable and deserve to be taken seriously, you don't need to go around yelling at everyone to treat you as such. This goes for male and female alike, so I want to tell the little brat to grow up and quit making us women look like spoiled, whiny children. In the author's defense, some of the other characters did serve as foils to the protagonist's immaturity (they occasionally called her out and rebuked her), so I held out hope that she would mature and change through the story arc, and, perhaps, her immaturity would be part of the plot. Had that been the case, this could have been a great series; the plot itself was interesting enough to keep me engaged. Near the end, she did begin to show some maturity. I was encouraged! Then I read the reviews on book 2 and saw how other readers were pointing out the same bratty behavior. I just couldn't take more of it. So, I guess the main character and the ancillary characters will tend to remain simplistic and will not experience any growth. The narrator's voice just didn't seem to fit the character, and, while not a bad reading, was just okay. I recommend a pass on this one. #Shifters #UrbanFantasy #Absurd #Violent #Animal #FemaleProtagonist #Abuse #Families #sweepstakes #tagsgiving

What made the experience of listening to Heirs and Graces the most enjoyable?

Katherine Kellgren's excellent characterization. I keep forgetting I'm listening to only one person. She allows me to forget it is an audiobook at all and become immersed in the story. The story is also very entertaining.

What other book might you compare Heirs and Graces to and why?

Perhaps J. D. Robb's "In Death" series, because of the cast of campy supporting characters, engaging plot and wonderful narrator performance.

Have you listened to any of Katherine Kellgren’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I consumed all the Royal Spyness books back-to-back, and now I'm bereft. I will be collecting her work from other authors in future.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Oh, yes! (only, not while actually sitting) It's great motivation, because I only allow myself to listen to an audiobook if I'm exercising or doing chores. The entire Royal Spyness series was an addiction.
